Chapter 169 - 168: Li Zhang’s Investigation
As soon as they entered the house, the two brothers began their investigation. Their first target was Li Yujian and Li Yuhan.
According to Li Zhang’s reasoning, if there really was a conspiracy happening in the house, then the eldest and second brothers would definitely know something.
The twins quietly sneaked through the corridor. Li Zhang even lowered his body and moved along the wall.
Li Cheng looked at him: "What are you doing? You know they can see us, right?"
"That’s not important. Just follow my lead."
Li Cheng sighed: "Why don’t we just call a quick sibling meeting? They will tell us if something is really going on."
Li Zhang shook his head: "That’s not the way of the investigators. If we call for siblings’ meeting now, they would know that something’s up and would make up lies to cover up their tracks. Besides, I don’t want them to think that I’m pity and love attention."
Li Cheng was speechless: "Oh? And you think they don’t know that already?"
Li Zhang sighed and said while looking into his brother’s eyes: "Only you I can believe without questioning, because I know that you would not lie to me."
Li Cheng’s eyes widened slightly, and a blush appeared on his cheeks. He didn’t expect that his brother would think so highly of him.
"Ahem, Ahem," Li Cheng coughs awkwardly to cover up his smile: "You know Zhang, I don’t think you should continue this investigation. There’s no way that father would abandon you. I’m sure what he’s doing is for your own good."
Li Zhang looked at him and thought for a moment and then shook his head: "I don’t believe you, you’re lying to me right now."
Li Cheng was stunned for a moment, then his face turned red. Didn’t you just say you believe me without question? You lying bastard. Li Cheng couldn’t help but curse underneath his breath.
Li Zhang paused when he heard the word bastard, then he sneered: "Oh? You and I have the same mother and father. I wonder what that makes you."
Li Cheng was so angry that he had to take a few deep breaths to calm down.
Li Zhang ignored him and carefully peeked through the open window.
Inside the room, Li Yujian and Li Yuhan sat at a table, opposite each other. Several books were spread across the table.
Both of them were writing. Occasionally, they would discuss something before continuing.
The atmosphere was so scholarly that Li Zhang almost fell asleep just looking at it.
Li Cheng glanced inside: "They are studying."
Li Zhang looked disappointed: "So boring, yet suspicious."
"Should I help you open the door?" Li Cheng was about to push the door open, but Li Zhang held him back.
"No rush, let’s observe them first."
But ten minutes passed and they were still doing the same thing. Li Yuhan suddenly looked towards the window. Li Zhang was startled and immediately ducked.
A moment later, Li Yujian’s amused voice sounded from inside: "If you’re done spying, you can come in."
Li Zhang froze, and couldn’t believe that he was discovered.
Li Cheng glanced at him: "Told you they saw us."
Since they were already discovered, there was no use hiding. They pushed open the door and entered.
The two older brothers immediately looked up.
Li Yuhan smiled: "What are you two doing?"
Li Zhang quickly straightened: "Nothing."
Li Yujian calmly looked at him.
That single glance made Li Zhang feel as though all his secrets had been exposed.
Li Cheng asked honestly: "We were looking for clues."
Li Yujian slowly placed down his brush.
"What clues?"
"Fourth Brother thinks Father doesn’t want him anymore. So we’re now investigators looking for clues."
There was a moment of silence. Li Zhang had no place to put his hands and feet, he wanted to disappear.
The older twins look at each other. Li Yuhan nearly dropped his brush from laughing, while Li Yujian pinched the bridge of his nose.
Li Cheng looked at the pile of books on the table and suddenly became interested: "Can I join you?"
"Of course."
Li Cheng immediately sat down and picked up a book.
Li Zhang was puzzled: "Third brother, what are you doing?"
"I will read here for a while, you can continue the investigation."
Li Zhang was speechless, he didn’t expect such development. He knew that can be attracted to food but he didn’t expect the same to be true for books.
Li Cheng asked: "Fourth brother, come join us."
Li Zhang looked horrified, as if he had seen a ghost. He rushed forward and immediately dragged Li Cheng away.
"Retreat! Retreat!"
Li Cheng barely had time to say goodbye before being pulled out of the room.
Li Zhang ran away faster than he had entered. Li Cheng sighed allowing himself to be dragged away.
...
Their second target was Li Jingsheng and Li Jingxuan.
Surely those two would be doing something suspicious and reveal their plot.
The brothers quietly approached Jingxuan’s room, nobody was there.
Then they checked Jingsheng’s room, there was no one there as well.
Li Zhang became excited: "They’re hiding. We just need to find their hideout, come on."
Just then, the two brothers walked past carrying bedding.
Four pairs of eyes met, everyone stood there staring at each other.
"What are you doing?" Li Zhang asked curiously.
"We’re exchanging rooms." Li Jingxuan answered.
"What? Why?"
"My room gets morning sunlight, and fifth brother has been converting it for a long time now. So I decided to exchange with him today."
Li Jingsheng nodded: "His room is closer to the training room, while mine is closer to the kitchen. You can guest the rest."
Li Zhang stared at them: "That’s it?"
Li Jingxuan looked confused: "What else would it be?"
Li Zhang felt another lead disappear.
Before he could ask more questions, Jingsheng and Jingxuan continued moving the bedding.
Another mission failed, but there was still one target remaining.
The third target was Li Juanxin.
Li Zhang immediately regained his confidence. Surely little Juanxin would not be too busy and reveal what they were plotting.
After all, Juanxin was terrible at hiding secrets.
The two brothers quietly arrived outside Juanxin’s room. Li Zhang carefully peeked inside. To his surprise, Li Juanxin was sitting at a desk with several sheets of paper spread before him. Fluffy was sleeping beside the table.
Instead of signing like the few times he saw him, Juanxin was completely focused on drawing formation lines.
His little face was so serious that he did not even notice someone peeking through the door.
Li Zhang was stunned: "What happened to him?"
Li Cheng looked inside: "What do you mean? Is there anything else other than him practicing?"
Li Zhang walked over and called out: "Xinxin."
Li Juanxin looked up and smiled: "Fourth brother, you’re here."
"Aren’t you practicing singing today?"
"I already practiced a while ago. Dad gave me these new inscription patterns to study."
Li Zhang sighed and left. Even Juanxin has homework. The world has become unreasonable today.
After half an hour, Li Zhang didn’t find any clue. He looked toward the sky. First Yujian and Yuhan were studying. Then Jingsheng and Jingxuan were moving rooms. Now Juanxin was practicing inscriptions.
What was happening? Why was everyone suddenly busy?
Most importantly...
Why was nobody doing anything suspicious when he was watching?
That evening, Li Zhang sat in the courtyard feeling puzzled.
Every investigation had failed. Every person he checked was doing normal things.
"I don’t understand."
"Maybe there was nothing to discover." Li Cheng said.
"No, there must be something wrong."
Li Cheng left him and went back to his training.
What Li Zhang did not know was that his entire investigation had failed before it even started.
When he first explained his plan to Li Cheng earlier during the day, Li Yujian wasn’t far away.
With his cultivation level, hearing the conversation was effortless.
The moment Li Zhang announced his intention to investigate everyone, Li Yujian quietly sent sound transmissions to remind everyone.
As a result, everyone had been prepared.
Li Yuhan immediately gathered study materials. Li Jingsheng and Li Jingxuan suddenly decided it was the perfect time to exchange rooms.
Even Juanxin received a warning and spent the afternoon practicing inscriptions.
Meanwhile, Li Zhang sat alone in the courtyard wondering why his detective skills had failed so completely.
Not far away, Li Yujian watched him from a window.
Li Yuhan stood beside him: "Do you think he knows?"
Li Yujian looked at Li Zhang, who was currently staring suspiciously at a flower pot: "No."
Li Yuhan laughed: "Poor Fourth Brother."
Li Yujian nodded: "For everyone’s sake, it is better if he stays confused for a few more days."
Li Cheng looked at his confused twin and suddenly felt a little sorry for him. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but he was certain that the others didn’t want them to find out about it.
And with his eldest brother’s sound transmission skills, he knew it wouldn’t be easy to penetrate.
But Li Zhang didn’t give up. If he can’t investigate his brothers, then he would investigate his father, the mastermind.
