Chapter 249: 249: Coronation II

They began walking towards the platform.

Imperial guards led the procession, behind them came nobles, military commanders, representatives of the great houses, foreign dignitaries, the High Elven delegation, the newly crowned king of Gladia kingdom, representatives from both the remaining human kingdoms, beastkin representatives, and also the demonic continent’s crown prince.

All the continents seemed present.

Atheline spotted his brother among the foreign delegates. The older high elf was smiling. He immediately decided not to look at him again unless he wanted to be distracted.

The procession continued through the designated path to the moon goddess temple.

Flowers rained from balconies and the upper floors, children waved banners and citizens shouted blessings and congratulations.

Atheline tried not to miss even one step or beat. He wanted everything to be as perfect as possible. Eventually, the massive coronation platform came into view. Built specifically for the ceremony.

Dark stone formed its foundation and golden banners hung from towering pillars. At the center stood the imperial throne and above it the crown.

Atheline stared in surprise. For all the discussions and the preparation, seeing it made everything feel real.

The procession reached the platform. The crowd slowly quieted as tens of thousands of voices faded into silence.

The chief ceremonial official stepped forward. His voice echoed across the city through amplification magic.

"Today we gather beneath the Moon goddess to witness the coronation of the chosen king."

The words rolled across the crowd, almost in a hypnotic wave.

Atheline listened carefully. Ancient traditions followed, ceremonial declarations, recognition from the great houses, acknowledgment from military leaders, and oaths from noble representatives. Each step carried centuries of history.

Atheline remained still, trying very hard not to look uncomfortable or bored through all the speeches.

Lilith sat calmly upon her throne overlooking everything while watching everyone with a composed look.

Eventually, the ceremony reached the final traditional challenge. The one everyone had discussed during his training.

The chief official raised a ceremonial staff. His voice boomed across the capital.

"Before the crown may descend, tradition demands opportunity."

The crowd became quieter since everyone understood what came next.

The official turned toward the assembled kingdom.

"Should any individual believe themselves more worthy of standing beside the throne..."

He paused.

"...they may step forward."

Atheline suppressed a sigh. This was what Lilith had been telling him since he arrived, the challenge tradition. It was one of the oldest customs in imperial history.

A ruler could not simply be granted authority. The kingdom had to be given the opportunity to object. With the dark elven nature, physical opportunity was the best choice before the whole kingdom.

The official continued.

"Let those who challenge present themselves."

Silence followed. Atheline stood at the center of the platform waiting for someone crazy enough to challenge him.

The crowd watched. Everyone within the Court watched with their breath held. No one moved.

A minute passed then another.

Atheline wasn’t surprised, neither was anyone else. The Hunting Competition had ensured that. Every major power on the continent had witnessed his performance. The impossible feats.

Most importantly everyone knew he had defeated opponents who should have beaten him. No ambitious noble wanted to become a public lesson.

The official waited the required time. Still, no one stepped forward.

Among the foreign delegates, several people exchanged amused looks.

Atheline spotted his brother again. The older elf looked entirely unsurprised. A noble challenge would have been political suicide.

Eventually, the official spoke once more.

"Does any challenger remain?"

He was only met with silence, not a single volunteer.

Atheline resisted the urge to smile. His coronation training had included detailed instructions for dealing with challengers. Apparently, none would be necessary.

The official nodded.

"The kingdom has spoken."

A wave of approval swept through the crowd as cheers erupted. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Atheline felt something settle inside him.

Acceptance.

The people weren’t merely tolerating this, it was clear that they wanted it. That realization carried more weight than any title.

The chief official turned toward the throne.

"Your Majesty."

She rose.

The crowd immediately quieted again. Atheline had witnessed this countless times, yet it remained impressive.

Lilith slowly and deliberately descended the steps of the throne platform until she stood before him.

For a brief moment, the entire city disappeared and just the two of them remained.

Lilith looked at him and he looked back. Neither spoke as they didn’t need to.

The chief official presented the crown.

An ancient artifact, older than the kingdom itself. The symbol of the king.

Lilith accepted it and then turned toward him.

Atheline knelt, as tradition demanded.

The whole Court held its breath.

She raised the crown for everyone to see. Sunlight reflected from silver metal.

Atheline found himself thinking about how ridiculous his life had become. Then the crown descended, resting upon his head.

The official’s voice thundered across the capital.

"Rise."

He stood.

The crowd instantly exploded in cheers, applause, and celebration. The sound shook the Court.

The official raised his staff.

"Behold!"

Atheline turned toward the gathered kingdom.

"Your king!"

The roar became even louder.

He glanced sideways. Lilith stood beside him, watching the crowd and perhaps their future.

This was it, acknowledgment and recognition. A moment where an entire empire collectively agreed on something and that something was him. The realization felt strangely humbling.

Beside him, Lilith quietly spoke just loud enough for him to hear.

"See, I told you so. You survived."

Atheline laughed.

"So far."

She almost smiled.

White started to slowly drift in the air. Atheline smiled then extended his arm outwards.

"The first snow."

The crowd continued celebrating around. Banners fluttered in the winter wind as temple bells rang throughout the capital.

And as the newly crowned king stood beside his queen before the entire kingdom, he found himself wondering what challenge would come next.

Because somehow, despite everything that had happened he had a feeling life was only becoming more complicated.

Out of his sight, the system flickered.
