Chapter 59: The night after the park

By the time they returned to the cabin, the sun had disappeared completely.

Darkness had settled over the forest, turning the towering pine trees surrounding the property into looming silhouettes against the night sky. The lake beyond the deck reflected strips of moonlight across its surface, while warm golden light spilled from the cabin’s windows, making the isolated retreat feel cozy despite the wilderness surrounding it.

The moment they stepped inside, Raina dropped onto the couch with a dramatic groan.

"My feet hurt."

Ethan locked the front door before glancing over his shoulder.

"We spent nearly ten hours walking around a theme park."

"I blame you."

"You blame me for everything."

"Because everything is usually your fault."

Ethan laughed as he carried a few grocery bags toward the kitchen.

Raina watched him disappear around the corner before allowing her head to fall back against the cushions.

The strange thing about Ethan wasn’t that he was kind.

Plenty of people were kind.

The strange thing was how effortless everything felt around him.

There were no games. No hidden agendas. No masks she had to wear.

No constant calculations.

Being with Ethan felt peaceful in a way nothing else ever had.

And maybe that was why losing him terrified her so much.

The thought slipped into her mind before she could stop it.

Susan.

The slap.

The accusations.

The certainty in Susan’s eyes.

You know what you are.

Raina closed her eyes.

She hated that those words still had power over her.

"Hungry?"

Her eyes opened again.

Ethan stood in the kitchen doorway holding a wooden spoon.

A ridiculous sight.

A strangely comforting one.

"A little."

"A little?"

The corner of his mouth twitched.

"Fine," she admitted. "I’m starving."

"There she is."

An hour later they sat across from each other at the small dining table near the fireplace.

The meal wasn’t anything extraordinary.

Just pasta, garlic bread, and a bottle of wine they’d picked up earlier that day.

Simple food.

Simple company.

Exactly what the weekend had been supposed to be before Susan appeared.

The fire crackled softly nearby while the lake reflected moonlight beyond the windows.

For a while, everything felt normal again.

Ethan told her a story about Marcus accidentally sending the wrong presentation to an important client years earlier.

By the time he reached the punchline, Raina was laughing hard enough that tears threatened to form in her eyes.

"No."

She shook her head.

"You’re making that up."

"I’m serious."

"There is absolutely no way."

Ethan grinned.

"He attached an entirely different project."

"Oh my God."

"The client spent ten minutes asking questions about a product we didn’t even sell."

Raina laughed harder.

That sounded exactly like Marcus.

The conversation drifted naturally after that.

Work.

Nathan.

Grace.

The amusement park.

Safe topics.

Comfortable topics.

The kind of conversations couples had when they weren’t carrying years of secrets between them.

Then Ethan’s phone vibrated.

The sound seemed oddly loud in the cozy cabin.

Both of them glanced toward it.

Ethan picked up the device.

A slight frown crossed his face.

Then vanished.

Without thinking much of it, he silenced the notification and set the phone back down.

Unfortunately, Raina had already seen the name.

Susan.

Something inside her tightened immediately.

"Who was that?"

Ethan reached for his wine.

"Susan."

The answer came casually.

As though the name didn’t carry enough weight to ruin her entire evening.

"Oh."

A knot formed in her stomach.

"When?"

"What?"

"When did she message you?"

Ethan blinked.

"Just now."

Just now.

While they were eating.

While they were laughing.

While she had finally started forgetting the confrontation.

"Oh."

Ethan studied her face.

"She wants to apologize."

Raina stared at him.

For a second she genuinely thought she had misheard.

"Apologize?"

"Yeah."

He shrugged.

"Apparently she feels bad about whatever happened at the haunted house."

The absurdity of it nearly made her laugh.

Feel bad?

Susan had spent years obsessing over her existence.

Years searching for answers.

Years convincing herself she was right.

And now she felt bad?

"What exactly did she say?"

Ethan noticed the change in her tone immediately.

His shoulders stiffened.

"She said she overreacted and wants to apologize properly."

Silence settled between them.

The crackling fireplace suddenly sounded much louder.

Ethan watched her carefully.

"What really happened today?"

Raina looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean something happened."

He leaned back slightly.

"You and Susan disappeared for fifteen minutes."

"So?"

"You came back with a red mark on your face."

His gaze softened.

"And neither of you seemed particularly convincing when you explained it."

Raina looked away.

Outside, the forest remained still and silent.

Inside, her chest felt painfully tight.

"What do you think happened?"

"I don’t know."

Ethan sighed.

"That’s why I’m asking."

The concern in his voice should have helped.

Instead it made something inside her snap.

For years she had lived with fear.

Fear of being exposed.

Fear of losing him.

Fear of her past finally catching up.

Now Susan was standing directly in the middle of everything.

Threatening the fragile life she’d built piece by piece.

And somehow Ethan still didn’t understand why she was struggling.

"What do you want me to say?"

Ethan frowned.

"Raina—"

"No."

She pushed her chair back slightly.

"What exactly do you want me to tell you?"

Confusion crossed his face.

Followed quickly by concern.

But she couldn’t stop now.

The frustration had finally surfaced.

"Do you want me to tell you that your ex-girlfriend slapped me?"

The words landed harder than she intended.

Ethan visibly flinched.

Instantly, she regretted it.

But the damage was already done.

"You let her back into our lives."

"Raina."

"It’s true."

His expression tightened.

"I didn’t invite her into our lives."

"You work with her every day."

"It’s my job."

"I know that."

"Then what are we arguing about?"

The question hung between them.

Because the truth was neither of them wanted to say it aloud.

The problem wasn’t Susan.

Not really.

Susan was simply the trigger.

The real problem was fear.

Every time Susan looked at her, Raina felt as though she were staring at a ticking bomb.

And eventually bombs exploded.

The realization drained the anger from her almost immediately.

Suddenly she just felt tired.

Exhausted.

Defeated.

"I lost my appetite."

She stood before Ethan could respond.

"Raina—"

"I need a minute."

Then she turned and walked away.

The bedroom door closed quietly behind her.

The cabin fell silent.

Back at the dining table, Ethan remained seated for several moments.

Confusion twisted inside his chest.

Because none of this made sense.

Susan had clearly upset her.

That much was obvious.

But there was something deeper underneath it all.

Something Raina wasn’t telling him.

Something she seemed terrified to discuss.

And for the first time in a very long time, Ethan didn’t know how to help.

Upstairs, Raina sat on the edge of the bed staring into darkness.

The anger had faded.

Leaving only guilt behind.

You idiot.

Ethan hadn’t deserved any of that.

The man had spent the entire weekend trying to make her happy.

Trying to make her smile.

Trying to reassure her.

And she’d rewarded him by unloading her fear onto him.

Raina buried her face in her hands.

The worst part was knowing Susan would probably love this.

Hours passed.

Eventually the cabin lights were turned off.

The two of them lay side by side beneath the blankets.

Neither sleeping.

Both pretending otherwise.

Outside, wind rustled through the trees.

Inside, silence stretched between them.

Then Ethan finally broke first.

"I’m sorry."

The words were barely louder than a whisper.

Raina opened her eyes.

Moonlight filtered through the curtains, painting silver patterns across the room.

"What are you apologizing for?"

Ethan stared at the ceiling.

"For all of this."

His voice sounded tired.

"For Susan."

"For today."

"For putting you in this position."

Raina turned toward him.

His profile was visible in the darkness.

The concern.

The guilt.

The frustration.

He carried all of it so openly.

Unlike her.

"I didn’t mean for any of this to happen," he said quietly.

"I know."

The answer came immediately.

Because she did know.

More than anyone.

Ethan wasn’t responsible for Susan.

Or the past.

Or the mistakes she’d spent years trying to outrun.

"I know," she repeated.

Silence settled again.

Then she sighed.

"I’m sorry too."

Ethan glanced toward her.

"What for?"

"For snapping at you."

She looked away.

"You were trying to help."

"I was."

"And I bit your head off."

"A little."

"A little?"

A faint smile appeared.

"Okay. A lot."

That finally earned a laugh.

A small one.

But enough.

The tension eased slightly.

Then Ethan shifted closer.

"I love you."

The words were simple.

Direct.

Certain.

"I love you, Raina."

Her chest tightened.

Only because she understood how fragile those words truly were.

How easily they could disappear if he ever learned everything.

"I know."

"No."

His hand found hers beneath the blanket.

"I don’t think you do."

She looked at him.

His eyes remained steady.

Unwavering.

"The only person I want is you."

A lump formed in her throat.

"I believe you."

"Good."

His thumb brushed gently across her knuckles.

"Because I’m running out of ways to say it."

For the first time that day, Raina felt herself relax.

Just a little.

Enough to move closer.

Enough to rest her forehead against his.

Enough to forget Susan.

At least for tonight.

Outside, the forest remained silent beneath the moonlight.

Inside, wrapped in each other’s arms, they finally drifted to sleep.

Neither of them realizing that the worst part of the weekend wasn’t behind them.

It was still waiting.
