Chapter 289: What doesn’t lava burn?

"What? This is a lava dungeon. Lava dungeon! Why the hell, literally, would I waste my time prepping an ice resistance potion? In fact, why would you even want one if you are going to swim in lava?

Last time I checked, Lava was hot, not cold." Figg said to her with an utterly baffled expression on his face, as if she had gone completely crazy and was asking for the dog to be named the next king of the moon.

"Well It’s time. I’m going to turn myself into something that Lava won’t burn or melt. So do you have anything that can replicate the effects? You said you grew your own ingredients, so can you grow some for this?"

He glanced between her eyes, trying not to be disturbed by the strange smile on her face, before sighing and reaching into his bag. He did not pull out a potion or some ingredients like Belladonna was expecting, but instead a book.

It was a book that detailed countless of different plants and their alchemical properties.

Figg quickly flicked through the book, glancing between a few pages, before landing on a plant that he liked the look of. He scanned it, before closing his eyes and concentrating deeply. Belladonna could feel his mana levels drop dramatically, as small green buds sprouted from the tips of his wooden antlers.

The buds, two in total, grew in size before blooming into two separate flowers. One of them was white and shaped like a small tea cup, and actually started to fill with its own liquid as it hung from Figg’s antlers. The other was a mixture of red and orange, with petals that were shaped like flames and a small heat haze that was coming off these petals.

Placing away the book, Figg opened his eyes and plucked the two flowers, ignoring the massive dip in his mana levels for the moment as he held them out towards Belladonna.

"Take this one first," He said, holding out the teacup flower, "it’s nectar will cancel out the effects of your current potion. Then take this, it isn’t as effective as a true ice resistance potion, but it’s the closest I can get."

Belladonna’s smile widened and she quickly snatched the flowers from him, bowing her head in thanks, before downing the entire teacup of nectar. It was incredibly sweet, like pure liquid sugar, and it wasn’t long until she felt the cold leaving her bloodstream and the oppressive heat starting to squeeze in around her.

A river of sweat was already pouring down her back by the time she shoved the flaming flower into her mouth and started to chew. Her teeth really were not made for eating plants, but eventually she had to swallow and felt her body heat up even more.

Belladonna nearly passed out from the heatstroke, as the flaming flower only made the effects of the surrounding heat worse, but it was necessary for the next step. She pulled off her clothes, causing Figg to let out a shocked whimper, as did Vestra, before the pair immediately looked away with faces hotter and redder than Belladonna’s.

Once she was as naked as possible, and practically glistening with sweat, Belladonna closed her eyes. She concentrated on generating an infusion, which was difficult when your body was expelling all of the liquid in your body just to try to cool down.

"What doesn’t lava burn or melt?" Belladonna asked with a slight smirk, although none could see it as they were all desperately looking away to try preserve her dignity, even if she disregarded it.

Her skin started to change. First it turned to solid stone, giving her the appearance that she was a statue come to life. But soon that changed, as the stone cracked, revealing a deep orange glow beneath that radiated outwards.

Combining an Earth and Fire infusion, Belladonna mixed them together and used the boost from the ’ice resistance’ flower, as her body started to literally become lava. Feeling the heat behind him, Saige couldn’t help but laugh as he finally gave Belladonna’s riddle its answer.

"Itself." He chuckled.

"Bingo. Well, it technically does. But Ice was melting, so why not give this a go. Anyways, wish me luck!" Belladonna shouted with a laugh, as she turned on her heels.

"Wait! You’re not actually going to-" Figg started to say, whirling around only to find the space behind him empty, as the lava at the edge of the lake splashed slightly from the disturbance.

The mad smile still on her face, Belladonna held her breath as she dove deeper and deeper into the depths of the lava. Her new lava body held up well inside of the lake, however she could feel her mana starting to deplete at an accelerated rate, as she was constantly having to burn it to keep up an infusion strong enough to make her blend in with the lava, as well as keep her form.

As it turned out, her idea was working too well. Her body was accepted as lava, and didn’t get harmed by it, because it instead wanted to merge with it. She had to constantly force her body together, expelling the foreign lava and stopping herself from breaking apart and joining it. At the rate it was currently draining, Belladonna calculated that she had roughly 100 seconds worth of mana, before she lost the infusion and reverted back to her regular body.

A fate that would immediately result in her becoming part of the lava in a whole different way, as her corpse was incinerated to less than ash.

Added into her calculations of the mana drain was the need to use her mana vision to track the secret chest, as there was physically no way to see through this lava otherwise. At least, that was the case when it came to Belladonna herself.

Of course when it came to the creatures that naturally lived in these super-heated lakes, they were perfectly equipped to track their prey both on the surface and in the depths of their home turf.
