Chapter 42: Assassination-2

"Why are you so angry? What happened?" Mira asked.

"Several bounties have appeared on my head! Now, the assassination guild has even accepted the mission. Tiger’s Roar! I won’t let you get away with this!" Kevin bellowed. His voice was so cold that the room’s temperature plummeted.

Tiger’s Roar was one of the competing guilds inside Dragon City, and after being affected by Kevin’s sinister schemes and witnessing his rapid rise, they blatantly retaliated by openly issuing a bounty on his head.

It should be known that in the sanctuary, rules mattered very little. As long as you weren’t openly harming innocent lives or openly colluding with demons, many things could be overlooked.

In Kevin’s case, if he hadn’t been so secretive and erased all evidence while killing everyone without a background who couldn’t threaten him later on, he would have long since been captured by the Demon Suppression Office.

The only reason Tiger’s Roar knew for certain it was Kevin was because of his ambitions and the constant attacks he launched against them. If Kevin hadn’t acted so forcefully before, they would’ve never suspected he was involved in targeting their guild members outside the city.

"How can this be?! Don’t they know that by provoking you further, they’ll lose even more once you gain greater authority inside Wolf Fang’s? Are Tiger’s Roar’s upper echelons fools?" Mira was shocked as well. She knew just how much damage Kevin could inflict on them if today’s event succeeded. Beyond being an ordinary low-tier guild, Tiger’s Roar had no ability to contend once Kevin gained real power and backing.

"Mira, we’re leaving! Everyone in Dragon City will watch as I take full control over the city! But first, I need to survive in order to do so," Kevin growled as he stood and prepared to leave.

"What about the selection?" Mira hurriedly asked. The audition had already begun.

"I’ve already notified someone to replace me. When the time comes, he will represent me in choosing those experts." Kevin refused to waste any more time. He rushed out of the room, intending to head toward Dragon City’s Teleportation Hall and return to Earth for safety until he secured his position.

However, as soon as Kevin stepped out of the room, numerous black chains emerged from the ground and bound him, startling the Adjudicator. He couldn’t react to the sudden development before he was restrained.

The instant the pitch-black chains bound Kevin, the mage released a low shout as he activated a Control Removal Skill, breaking free from his restraints. He then instinctively raised his staff and used Frozen Circle.

A wave of cold air spread through Kevin’s surroundings.

However, the cold air failed to restrain the figure that had ambushed Kevin. On the contrary, the figure moved even closer.

In the next moment, a streak of blue light slashed toward Kevin.

Having no other choice, Kevin used his Blink Skill, an ability every mage had to learn if they wished to have a future, vanishing and reappearing twenty yards away from where he had stood in the corridor.

At this moment, Kevin finally realized who had attacked him.

It was a man hidden beneath a black cloak. The cloak’s hood concealed the man’s face, and only a pair of black eyes could be seen. A silvery-white flame burned within them, making Kevin shudder. Despite the man standing right in front of him, Kevin couldn’t sense the slightest tension or oppression with his five senses; it didn’t even feel as though the man truly existed.

"Who are you?!" Kevin immediately realized that the man before him was no weaker than himself, and a hint of fear flashed in his eyes.

If not for his sharp senses instantly detecting the chains that had emerged from the ground, this man would’ve likely killed him already.

Still inside the room, Mira was similarly stunned.

She had never seen such a reckless expert before.

She had never imagined that someone would dare aim for Kevin’s life here.

Setting aside Kevin’s combat strength, Dragon City was Wolf Fang’s main base of operations. Moreover, they were inside the King Colosseum. The cultivators of the Guardian Empire guarding this place were far stronger than the ones patrolling the streets. Every single one of them was at least at the Eighth Layer of the First Realm. Attempting to assassinate Kevin here was nothing short of suicide.

However, Mira, as a priest, reacted quickly and immediately began casting a spell to support Kevin.

Meanwhile, the expert Mira considered foolish was none other than Moon.

Naturally, Moon understood the risks of attacking a cultivator inside the King Colosseum. However, those very risks were exactly what he needed to increase his chances of success.

Furthermore, he had specifically chosen this narrow corridor on the second floor to make his move. Combat in such a cramped area was highly disadvantageous for a magical class. Hence, his chances of killing Kevin here were much higher than if he targeted the Ice Mage out on the open streets or in the wilderness.

In addition, the King Colosseum’s guards were stationed in the first-floor main hall. By the time they discovered the attack and reached the second-floor corridor, at least ten seconds would’ve already passed. They would react far slower than if he had launched the attack outside.

"No answer? Then die!" Kevin began chanting an incantation when he realized his attacker intended to remain silent, firing numerous Frost Arrows toward Moon simultaneously.

Inside the King Colosseum, he had an absolute advantage. Although the terrain worked against him, he didn’t need to defeat Moon. He only needed to buy enough time until the guardians arrived.

He refused to believe Moon could kill him in such a short period of time. Moreover, he currently possessed a trump card provided by one of the guild’s elders. He was confident in contending against old monsters of the Second Realm, much less some lunatic with a death wish.

In the next moment, the Frost Arrows passed through Moon’s body and struck the wall behind him, resulting in a white explosion.

Kevin’s expression darkened as he noticed that Moon had already appeared behind him. However, Moon hadn’t revealed even the slightest trace of killing intent. Despite having reached the peak of the First Realm long ago, Kevin had still been half a beat too slow in detecting him.

Just as Moon considered using Ice Barrier to protect himself...

The dagger at Moon’s waist had already been unsheathed as he unleashed Assassin’s Grip followed by Lethal Stab toward Kevin.

The difference in realm alone created terrifying mental pressure. After Moon used his martial art, that pressure increased severalfold. Any ordinary First Realm cultivator would’ve frozen in fear beneath such oppression. Even standing upright would’ve been difficult. However, Kevin was supported by multiple treasures from the guild, so although he wasn’t completely immobilized, his reactions were still delayed.

As a result of that brief delay, the blade sliced through Mira’s Magic Shield and Kevin’s Frost Shield with almost no resistance. Kevin had no time to deploy his Ice Barrier before the weapon pierced his body.

Being in the Second Realm, the difference in power was enormous. Even with the treasures Kevin possessed, there was no bridging that gap or defending against such an attack. After the new era descended upon Earth, a popular saying emerged:

Everyone below the Second Realm is an ant.

And that saying was by no means a joke.

Even after the Magic Shield and Frost Shield absorbed a significant portion of the damage, when Moon’s Lethal Stab struck Kevin, it felt as though his body was made of paper. Kevin was a mage with a weak physique and a lower realm. This single strike was enough to instantly kill him.

"Just who... are you?"
