Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Finally Giving Up

That pride for this place was gone. Only melancholy remained.

In the past two months, they had lost too many brothers. Not just those who went on the mission with them, but those who turned into zombies on the first day of mass fever and they had to put them down themselves before they infected even more people.

That had been the most difficult he had ever done. Raising a gun and putting a bullet through your own comrades brain because watching him or her turn into a monster was worse was not easy.

He still made the decision to leave this place.

The truck was parked in the parking lot and Qi Long ordered his soldiers to go back and rest while he went to report on his mission.

He asked them to tell the others about the crystal cores so that if there were people going outside for missions, they won’t miss an opportunity to become stronger.

He also told them to tell only the people they were absolutely sure they could trust with their lives about their plans for retirement and exiting the military.

If there were people who wanted to follow them, they could also apply for discharge together with them later.

Qi Long stood in front of the three leaders of his military base and reported the completion of their mission.

He didn’t mention Ye Xuan at all because he didn’t want to cause him trouble.

"How many of you came back?" His immediate superior asked.

"Five, sir." Qi Long replied.

The superior’s expression darkened and his face became solemn.

Qi Long thought that at least his leader felt bad about the death of his brothers. But before he could complete that thought, he heard a sentence that chilled him to the bones.

"With so many of the elites dead, we might have a problem getting the large share of power and resources we had anticipated after the completion of the survivor base compared to the first military base." The second leader commented and the other two, including his immediate superior nodded.

Qi Long felt an unspeakable anger grow from his bones, but he maintained a calm expression outward. He didn’t give even a hint of dissatisfaction. He just stood there and waited to be dismissed.

"Okay, you and your team have been through a lot. Go and rest for the next few days. You won’t go on another mission for now." His direct superior said.

"Yes sir." Qi Long saluted the leaders and turned and left.

He had never felt his legs so heavy and never wanted to leave a place so badly.

He had just suspected that their leaders no longer served the people but amassed power for themselves. But those were just speculations.

Hearing them talk about his dead brothers as if they were not humans but just a means to the end made him boil with anger. However, he knew when to act and when to be deaf and dumb.

He didn’t want to act impulsively and affect his remaining brothers. If they got into trouble because of him, he could never forgive himself.

After going back to his room, he took a long shower for the first time in more than a month and laid in bed to think and rest.

He had planned to cultivate once he was clean, but now he couldn’t relax enough to cultivate.

As he was thinking about when to submit his resignation letter, he fell into a deep sleep.

Ye Xuan had been cultivating diligently for the last three days without rest. He only stopped for a moment to drink some of the spiritual spring water Chu Miao had left behind then cultivate to refine the spiritual energy in it.

Through this cycle, he was already attacking the barrier to break through to Qi refinement second level. What surprised him was that his superpowers had also increased.

He was also on the verge of breaking through to the fourth level. This had surprised him since he hadn’t used any crystal cores during this cultivation time.

But he didn’t dwell too much on it as the end is what matters the most, not the means.

After attacking the barrier for two hours and almost completely exhausting all his spiritual energy, he finally heard a shattering sound coming from within him.

This was the second time he had heard that sound in four days. The first time was when he broke through to the first level of Qi refinement, and this was the second time.

Just that, this time the sound was a bit louder. All of a sudden, his nearly empty dantian felt as if a dam had been opened and spiritual energy flowed in at an unstoppable speed.

Every pore of his body felt comfortable with warm energy seeping into his meridians, bones, blood, and tendons. He could also feel his strength increasing at a speed of a sound wave causing his meridians and dantian to expand.

Even without guidance, he knew that his dantian now held more spiritual power. However, even after successfully advancing, spiritual energy was still abundant and running rampant inside his body.

He decided to use the body tempering technique Chu Miao taught him and strengthen his meridians. She had taught him a chant that could help toughen his physical body using spiritual energy and another one that could strengthen his meridians.

When he broke through to the first level of Qi refinement, he had used the excess spiritual energy to temper his physique, but now he chose to strengthen his meridians because he had just noticed how fragile they were.

Just from the pressure of the excess spiritual energy causing chaos in her meridians and dantian, he was already experiencing pain and using his divine sense to investigate, he realized that some of his meridians were injured.

This was evidence of just how fragile they were. He could imagine that in an intense battle, the meridians in their current state could be easily injured causing irreversible damage.
