Chapter 28 - Summoner Silver

It was morning again.

The light filtered softly through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the dorm room. Since there were no classes today either, the boys had slept in longer than usual, their bodies needing the rest after everything that had happened the night before.

As they each began to rise, groggy and disheveled, they went about preparing for the day in their own quiet way. The silence wasn't uncomfortable—just thick with unspoken thoughts.

Carlos, however, was acting differently.

He seemed more open than he usually was. He engaged Kairos in conversation, asking him how he slept and even mentioning things he never used to care about.

"Maybe we should go to the library and study more today," Carlos said casually, his voice carrying a subtle hint of purpose.

Kairos was dressed in one of Carlos's shirts—they were almost the same size, and sharing clothes had become second nature among them by now. He paused as he processed Carlos's words, then nodded, immediately understanding what he meant.

They needed answers—about the legendary summon. About what had happened. About everything.

Despite the horror from last night, Kairos admired how Carlos could still speak with such calmness, such focus. It was as though nothing fazed him. But Kairos knew better. Everyone was feeling it. They just hid it differently.

Still, something was off. Someone was missing from the conversation.

"Uhm, Darnell... you got any plans?" Kairos asked, glancing toward the corner of the room.

Darnell was silently getting dressed, carefully slipping on his shirt and buttoning it up as if no one else was in the room. He gave no reply. Not even a nod. Just... silence.

Kairos noticed.

It was strange—very unlike Darnell. Though his physical wounds had mostly healed thanks to the healing ability that came with his summon, something deeper was clearly still broken.

The pain was still there. And it wasn't just in his body.

Kairos took a few steps forward, trying to close the distance. Maybe, just maybe, Darnell would respond if he couldn't ignore him.

"Hey Darnell, is something wrong?—"

But before he could finish the sentence, a sudden buzz echoed throughout the room. Not just from Kairos's phone, but from all of theirs. The synchronized vibration made their hearts skip.

Kairos instinctively reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone and reading the notification that flashed across the screen. His breath caught for a moment. Then his heartbeat quickened.

He tried not to let it show.

Not in front of Darnell.

The message read:

A student has been found dead in the marketplace of the Academy. He was brutally beaten. If you are responsible for the beatings, please report to any instructor. There will be an investigation. If you are caught, the Academy will not take it lightly.

It was exactly as Kairos had feared. The Academy wouldn't just brush this off. Not a death. Not like this.

He tried to think—tried to find a solution—but his mind was racing and blank at the same time. Panic itched at the back of his mind, but he forced himself to stay composed.

They couldn't afford to slip up now.

They just had to hope... they wouldn't be caught.

Meanwhile...

The marketplace was cordoned off entirely. Yellow hazard signs were placed all around the scene, bright and aggressive, as if warning the air itself. A few military officers stood guard, stopping anyone who tried to enter without a valid permit.

The atmosphere was grim.

And then, she arrived.

Not just a nurse—no, not just that. She was more. A military official. One with presence.

Silver.

She stepped forward with a large white box slung under one arm, the contents within sterile and sharp. Around her neck hung an identity card, swinging lightly as she walked. The officers at the barricade saw it and quickly moved aside to let her pass, offering respectful nods and crisp greetings.

She responded with calm gestures, not too stiff, not too soft.

Professional.

Focused.

She approached the exact point where the body had been found. The area was still marked with the remnants of battle—scorch marks, shattered tiles, bloodstains faded from where the body had been hastily removed.

'A battle went down here,' she noted internally, her eyes scanning every detail.

Fights between students were expected—encouraged, even. It was part of the Academy's philosophy: to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong. But killing? That crossed the line.

And yet, someone had done just that.

Silver clenched her jaw slightly. She had seen injuries. Brutal ones. Broken bones, punctured lungs. But death—especially one this violent—was something else.

From the pictures of Mike's body, it had been clear. The killer didn't just want to win—they wanted him gone. Permanently.

Silver crouched, setting her box down carefully beside her. She slipped on a pair of gloves, their surface catching the morning light, and slowly placed her hand on the exact spot the body had been found.

Then she whispered.

"Beast Integration."

A soft glow rippled through her form, and a unicorn-like horn slowly extended from her forehead—elegant and sharp. Her summon's presence merged with her own, the connection seamless.

Her integration ability wasn't just for strength. It was unique. It allowed her to feel the past, to glimpse images or sensations tied to a moment in time. A technique known as—

"Dream Space."

She activated it.

Instantly, a surge of pain shot through her arm. It was like boiling oil had been injected straight into her veins. Her summon screamed internally, recoiling from the backlash.

Silver yelped, falling backward, her breath caught in her throat. Her body landed with a soft thud against the hard floor.

"Ma'am!" one of the officers shouted, rushing to her side.

She held up a hand. A firm gesture.

"I'm fine," she managed to say, even though her voice shook slightly.

The officer hesitated, then turned back to his post with a quiet scoff. 'Tch. She better be quick. I'm not standing here all day,' he thought.

Silver lifted her hand to her eyes.

It was... dry. Crooked. Like the skin had shriveled in seconds—dehydrated and ghostly pale.

She froze.

This was exactly what had happened to Mike. And she had only touched the ground.

If she had seen the memory—actually seen what happened—she wasn't sure if her vision would still be intact.

But now she was certain.

Whoever or whatever had caused this death was beyond normal. Beyond rules. It wasn't just a student with power—it was something cursed. Something wrong.

It had to be found.

Locked away.

Examined—and destroyed, if necessary.

Silver breathed slowly, trying to ease the pounding in her chest.

'Titanfang Academy... this year is turning into something else entirely. And for once, I'm scared I might not be ready.'
