Chapter 6 - Summoners tour of the academy

After all the sparring procedures were completed, the participants were summoned out of the training grounds. The sergeant stood before them, her gaze sharp and unwavering as she prepared to deliver her verdict.

She dismissed two individuals immediately, their names called out without hesitation. Without a moment's delay, military personnel stepped forward, escorting them away from the facility. The onlookers could only assume they were being sent home, their journey in the academy cut short before it even began.

However, a few others—including Darnell, who had suffered defeat—were still standing among the selected candidates. Confusion flickered across the faces of those who had emerged victorious, unsure why some of the defeated remained.

The sergeant addressed the unspoken questions with a firm tone.

"This test was not about determining winners or losers," she explained. "It was to assess your potential. Those dismissed had none. The rest of you, regardless of victory or defeat, have qualities worth refining."

Understanding dawned on the students, their earlier confusion giving way to a mix of relief and newfound respect.

With that settled, the sergeant straightened and continued. "Now that I have chosen my candidates, I will introduce myself. I am Silver, a military sergeant. That is all you need to know."

With that brief introduction, she gestured towards her last-standing officer. The man stepped forward, holding a large metallic tray filled with identical-looking devices.

"While you are within the academy, personal devices are strictly prohibited. Submit your own and collect an academy-issued communicator."

One by one, the students complied, depositing their personal phones and retrieving the assigned devices.

Silver's gaze swept over the crowd, her sharp instincts catching an irregularity. A particular student had collected his new phone but had failed to discard his old one. He was attempting to slip back into the crowd, perhaps thinking he had gone unnoticed.

Wrong move.

Silver's hand shot out, gripping his shoulder in a vice-like hold. "Hey!" Her voice was steel, her grasp digging into his bones. "Did you not hear me? I said drop your phone."

The student, Kairos, winced under the pressure, his voice laced with pain as he responded. "Ugh—I... I don't have a phone."

The words struck a chord in Silver, her brows furrowing slightly. She had just accused an innocent person.

Rather than apologize, she simply released him without another word. Kairos, unbothered, shrugged off the interaction and returned to the crowd.

With that matter settled, Silver turned back to the group. "Now, I will show you around the academy. Follow me."

They trailed behind her, making their way toward an immense elevator. It was massive, capable of transporting at least five times their number with ease. To Kairos' surprise, the elevator was set to ascend.

'Just how deep underground are we?' he wondered.

The long ride upward came to an end as the doors finally slid open, revealing a vast hallway bustling with movement. Military personnel filled the space, their disciplined presence dominating the atmosphere.

Silver led them forward, passing numerous agents along the way. Many greeted her with respect, a testament to her reputation among them.

Reaching the exit, the students stepped outside—and what lay before them was beyond belief.

Towering skyscrapers loomed overhead, their structures sleek and futuristic. Dome-like buildings dotted the horizon, and even from a distance, the advanced technology embedded within them was evident. It was a city unlike anything they had ever seen, its technological marvels far surpassing the known world.

For Kairos, who had spent his life surviving in the ruins of a dystopian wasteland, the sight was nothing short of breathtaking.

"Welcome to Titanfang Military Base," Silver announced. "Ranked third among all military bases."

Her words carried weight, making the moment feel almost cinematic.

As they moved deeper into the facility, Silver led them through different districts within the base. They passed an entire market district, a forge where weapons were being crafted, and what appeared to be a civilian sector. The realization dawned on Kairos—this was more than just a military base. It was a self-sufficient city, a nation of its own.

No wonder the military held so much power in this world.

"Wow... I've seen the faction cities, but this..." one of the students muttered, eyes wide in awe. "The military definitely has the best one."

The voice belonged to a girl with long white hair, her demeanor cold yet filled with anticipation. She was elegantly dressed, her attire exuding wealth and status.

As she scanned the environment, her gaze landed on Kairos. Almost immediately, a look of irritation crossed her face.

Kairos noticed.

'What's her problem?' he wondered.

He recognized her from the sparring session—she was the one who had summoned that majestic white phoenix. From what little he had seen, the beast was incredibly powerful, though he hadn't been able to witness the full extent of its abilities.

'Is she looking down on me because she thinks she's stronger?'

The girl clicked her tongue in annoyance before dismissing him entirely, turning her attention back to the cityscape. Kairos, unfazed, did the same.

Their journey through the academy grounds continued, leading them to an extensive forest. Strangely, though it was heavily fortified, there weren't many guards stationed there.

Finally, they arrived at their destination—a grand structure nestled within the depths of the academy.

"Welcome to the First-Year Building," Silver announced. "This is where you will be spending most of your time as first-year students."

From there, the tour extended further, covering the entirety of the academy. They were introduced to their classrooms, the expansive library, and various training facilities. By the time they reached their dormitories, the sky had begun to darken.

Upon arrival, they saw other sergeants with their own groups, some already dispersing as their students headed towards their designated rooms.

Silver's voice cut through the air. "This marks the end of your tour. Check your devices for your dorm assignments."

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving no room for further questions.

Kairos activated his academy phone. Instantly, his dorm number appeared on the screen.

Dorm Room 6.

"Hey, what's your number?" A familiar voice called from behind.

Kairos turned to see Darnell, grinning brightly. Suspicious of the sudden friendliness, Kairos hesitated but eventually held up his device for him to see.

"No way!" Darnell exclaimed. "We got the same number. That means we're bunkmates, right?!"

Kairos narrowed his eyes, suppressing a sigh.

'How the hell did I end up with him?'

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the dormitory hallways, two boys were deep in conversation.

"Man, I can't believe it's already getting violent in this school."

"Yeah," his companion replied. "That lunatic tried to bribe me for my room number. When I refused, he straight-up attacked me."

"The criminally insane, right?"
