Chapter 258: And So, It Was Done

The world we found when we left the Carnival of the Damned was nothing like how it was when we went in. The road that we had been traveling down had completely disappeared. The live oak trees that had been on either side of the highway now looked to be more like bald cypresses, and the ground itself was covered with grass and moss.

"What the fuck," grunted Luca as he crouched down, running his hand over the grass. "Where are we?"

"You are asking me like I’ve ever been out of my house before the end of the world," I chuckled. We could hear the barking of a few gators as our presence surprised them as much as we had been surprised by them. "But I’m guessing still in and around O City."

"Let me go," hissed Max, reminding me that I had more pressing things to worry about than my current location, like the man who had tried to kill me.

"How do you want to die?" I asked, cocking my head to the side as I turned to look at him. "Because make no mistake, you will be dying."

"Let me take care of him, Love," purred Désiré from where he was still holding Max’s arm. "The human has a power, and I am just dying to see what it’s all about."

Shrugging my shoulders, I nodded my head. Suddenly, a black mist encompassed Désiré’s hand right before he laid it down on Max’s chest.

"The meat sack says they call it toxic powers," continued Lust, the purr even more evident in his voice as his face broke out into a smile. "How apropos since love is both hot and toxic. Oh, I fully approve."

All the Sins seemed to be looking out of the eyes of their hosts as Lust and Envy stepped back, letting Max fall to the ground, gasping.

Black boils quickly appeared on his skin. However, almost as soon as they appeared, they burst into a hole of pus and blood. Over and over again, they popped up and then exploded, leaving Max to scream and cry on the ground.

"I don’t deserve this," he hissed, his hatred fixated on me. "I don’t deserve this."

"See," murmured Pride as he crouched down in front of the man. "I think you deserve much, much worse than this. In fact, I think this is almost too easy of a death for you."

"I didn’t do anything wrong! She is a demon or something. She took them all away from me! I just wanted to get them back," growled Max, his voice much stronger than his body hinted at.

"You think?" asked Envy, cocking his head to the side.

"It has always been you and me, Salvatore. How could you just sit back and let this happen?"

Envy raised an eyebrow before smirking at Max. "I’m afraid that Salvatore isn’t available right now, but he wanted me to let you know that he is more than fine with it. In fact, the two of us were already planning on killing you a long time ago. Almost since the moment we found Hattie and knew who she was."

Turning his attention back to Pride, Envy continued. "Salvatore has one other power that he doesn’t know what it is. Can we use Max to figure it out?"

Waving his hand toward Max, Pride stepped back. "Whatever you need."

Crouching down beside Max, Envy smirked at him again. "This might hurt," he assured the human. "Actually, who are we kidding? We are hoping that it hurts a lot."

While Lust’s mist was pitch black, Envy’s was pure white. Even the air around the mist seemed to be happier and calmer than the one around Lust. "Ugh," grunted Envy as he allowed his power to wash over Max, completely healing him from all the disease that Lust had inflicted on him. "Well, this isn’t a power I’ll be using all that often. That was disgusting!"

Lust simply laughed as Envy walked away in disgust, flinging his hand from side to side as if still trying to get the white mist off of him. "Just think, we can now make his torture last forever. I make him sick, and just as he is on the brink of death, you can bring him back to life. We can continue the cycle for centuries and never get bored." fгeewebnovёl.com

"Humm," murmured Envy, seriously thinking about what Lust was suggesting. "Healing as a way of prolonging torture. Okay, I can live with that."

"But I can’t," sighed Hattie as she leaned against Chang Xuefeng’s chest. "I want him dead. He tried to kill me, and I don’t want him breathing anymore. And then I want him burned so that no part of him can be resurrected as a zombie, and then, finally, I want his soul completely obliterated so that he can’t even be given a second chance at this life. I know way too many people who are working through their second lives, and I don’t want him to target me."

Lust and Envy narrowed their eyes as they looked back at the human on the ground in front of him. "Okay," they agreed. When dealing with an enemy, it was always best to take them out so well that there was never a chance of them stabbing you in the back.

"I got his soul," announced Chang Xuefeng. "I’ll pull it out when you are done killing him. No point in sparing him the pain of actually dying."

There was a chorus of chuckles, and suddenly, Max was screaming again in pain as the boils returned, breaking out all over his body. "Just kill me," Max hissed. "Because if you don’t, I will come back for her. I will take my time, find her as a small child, and torture her for years before finally telling you about it."

The promise in his voice startled Dante so badly that he merged with Pride to see the human in front of him. "I remember that feeling," Dante snarled as he took his power and plunged into Max’s brain. Finding the images of what Max wanted to do to Hattie, Dante took great pride in completely destroying Max’s mind.

"That was the feeling that brought me back to before the apocalypse. I agree with Hattie. I’m not letting you have a second chance. Kill him now, burn him, destroy his soul. That way, we won’t have to be looking over our shoulder anymore."

And so, it was done.
