Chapter 337: Chapter 63 Finale: The Death of the Medicine Buddha (Part 2)

“He has just been staying in the laboratory, fixing the culture medium tanks and not making any unnecessary movements.”

The comely female soldier stared at Li Yan on the screen and spoke to Qiao Xing beside her.

Qiao Xing propped his palm against his nose bridge, “Day is about to break, how is it on Commander Liang’s side?”

“The people have arrived. I estimate that the cleansing plan on their end has already begun.”

“Good.”

Qiao Xing nodded, at this stage, for him, having reached this point was no different from grand accomplishment.

Li Yan was dead for sure.

No matter if he was really one of the mysterious ambitious men who brewed the tragedy of the harsh winter as mentioned by Ramu Jue, or genuinely just an innocent Wilderness Hunter, Qiao Xing could legitimately use this cleansing plan to get rid of him.

In fact, Qiao Xing had never thought killing a third-tier soldier scraping for food in the wilderness would pose any difficulty for him, but the reason to involve Li Yan in this cleansing plan, aside from guaranteeing success, was mainly to give an explanation to Afafu.

Afafu was a shrewd woman; the manpower mobilization and consumption required to kill a high-composite third-tier ability user would absolutely not escape the scrutiny of the bio-department she belonged to. Silently killing Li Yan was unrealistic.

These days, Qiao Xing had intentionally exposed to Afafu the side of himself that was under enormous pressure, creating an atmosphere that made it look like the Black Star war machine was being pushed into a corner. Once the news of Li Yan’s death reached her ears, Afafu would surely use her authority to investigate the insides of the cleansing plan. The cleansing plan had such high priority that it was being directed by the Supreme Committee itself. Afafu could only meet with frustration, which would inadvertently confirm that it was not himself who wanted Li Yan dead but the Supreme Committee.

Although Afafu would still resent him and the conflict between husband and wife would become acute, Qiao Xing understood his wife. Like all capable women, Afafu was smart but also emotional.

In front of her, he could completely show firm obedience to his superiors and at appropriate times, behind some life details, reveal his helplessness and guilt for killing a benefactor. Afafu would surely soften.

“Love and politics are both full of deceit,” this was the lesson Qiao Xing’s father had taught him.

As to why Li Yan had to be killed, apart from the pride of a military offspring that Qiao Xing revealed when he spoke to Liang Zhengyong, more importantly, deep inside, Qiao Xing could feel that his beloved wife harbored indeed a faint affection for that Wilderness Hunter whose eyes were filled with wildness.

Qiao Xing had always been a perceptive man, no matter what the aspect.

He could even detect that Liang Wei, in secret, was stirring up this dark emotion of his and the malicious intentions behind it.

But he still did it, driven by the arrogance and jealousy he was unwilling to confront.

Perhaps lacking in a bit of patience with the details, but this young man’s methods were already very sophisticated, enough to deceive everyone. After this incident, he might reflect on the risks afterward, draw lessons, and face his dark emotions more aptly, becoming an even more dangerous politician, a more outstanding soldier.

Unfortunately, there were no maybes.

Inside the laboratory.

“Bring in some new glass tanks, and this operating table can be put back into use.”

Li Yan glanced at the Yak gene sequence summarized on the operating table; they were sorted by number. His own “Autumn Yak” was actually ranked third and was highlighted in gold for its specialness, while “Super Sensitive Yak” and “Thunder Yak” were ranked eighth and fifty-sixth, respectively.

“Where are the people?”

Li Yan turned around to find the vast laboratory now empty save for himself. The last assistant to hurriedly leave had just disappeared at the door, and the alloy door locked crosswise.

Qiao Xing’s face popped up on the screen. He stared at Li Yan through the surveillance camera and said into the microphone, “Are you truly oblivious? Or are you fearless?”

“A bit of both, I guess,” Li Yan shrugged. “Before I came here, I didn’t expect the situation to be this bad. Medicine Buddha and the Black Star war machine actually joined forces. To complain a bit, I haven’t received the slightest benefit from the Big Ben Research Institute’s actions until now; instead, I got into a whole mess of trouble. Talk about bad luck.”

He tossed the wrench away and smiled at Qiao Xing on the screen, “Shall we go by the book, or just get it over with?”

“You really are…”

Qiao Xing’s words broke off halfway when he suddenly yanked hard on the lever beside him, and the surveillance camera burst apart.

“Goodbye!”

He said coldly.

In the original plan, the modified isolation laboratory was to release first a smoke containing nerve toxin and laser fences, all of which belong to Black Star’s top-tier weapons for capturing high-level powered individuals. However, Qiao Xing, overwhelmed by a strong sense of unease, had destroyed the entire room with white phosphorus bombs.

Everyone in the surveillance room squinted unconsciously. Such a primitive and brutal heat weapon had been phased out not for lack of firepower, but because of its cruelty and instability. Even fourth-level troops would have difficulty surviving under these conditions.

“Is it over just like that?”

A soldier, chewing gum, slackened his grip and said to Qiao Xing, “Colonel, you brought us here for nothing.”

“It’s not that simple.”

The gum-chewing soldier turned his head to see an old man with bandages wrapped around him. He sneered disdainfully and said nothing.

“Colonel, target spotted in corridor R13, he’s moving fast.”

Qiao Xing suddenly looked up, and the wall-sized screens slowly zoomed in under the fingers of the beautiful female soldier, bringing into focus a dark shadow. That face, clear now, belongs to Li Yan himself.

As the frames played in slow motion, what ultimately appeared before everyone was a bird-like girl with snow-colored wings wrapped around her, her eyelids painted with an antique red makeup, and in the next frame, she was replaced by Li Yan, in a black trench coat, wielding a silver-inlaid long sword.

“Ability projection, he is indeed an outsider.”

One of the Action Warriors Qiao Xing had summoned spoke weakly.

“He’s headed towards Commander Liang’s office.”

The female soldier exclaimed.

“He’s been sitting in his room all night not moving, how would he know where Commander Liang is?”

Qiao Xing shouted at the female soldier. Liang Zhengyong himself did not agree with involving Qiao Xing in this plan. As he had stated, even if Li Yan truly was an outsider, dragging him into this purge did not serve Black Star’s interests.

If this distraction hindered the real targets of the purge, the consequences would be dire. Even without such complications, it would lead the Committee to question his capabilities.

“I… I don’t know either.”

The female soldier answered reluctantly.

“Then find out.”

Qiao Xing spat out coldly.

He faced the operations team in the surveillance room. He had been considering whether calling these people in to kill a Wilderness Hunter was overdoing it. Now it seemed to be worth the cost.

The man spat out his gum and turned to Qiao Xing, “Colonel Qiao, we’ll help you this one time. That’ll settle the debt we owe to the Qiao family.”

“Of course.”

The man turned and scanned the people in the surveillance room, then spoke, “Teams of three. I’ll lead one, Xiao Ye, Mei Hu, Ye Ying, each of you lead one. As for Mr. Song…”

Song Zuo, holding a sniper rifle, said softly, “I work better alone.”

“That’s even better.”

The man snapped his fingers, “Move out.”

These soldiers were a special action force directly under the Supreme Committee. Each of the twelve special action troops had been injected with more than five kinds of ability potions. Unlike random injections, these were scientifically matched to maximize potential. Xiao Ye, Mei Hu, Ye Ying, along with the man himself, had all mastered the fourth-level ability potions from Black Star’s arsenal, making them combat-oriented superpowered individuals. If it weren’t for their family backgrounds, each of these four could’ve attained the rank of ‘Major General.’

Four fourth-level powered individuals, eight composite third-level powered individuals, plus the weapon systems locked on the secondary targets of the purge plan. This was more than enough manpower by Black Star’s past standards for operations targeting “outsiders.”

To anyone else, Qiao Xing must seem insane to commit such resources.
