Chapter 118: Root+

"So, would you like to join the Nemesis Guild?"

Oliver asked with great expectation.

*RED*

Immediately, a red color took over his phone screen, signaling rejection.

*Sigh*

Oliver was a little disappointed, so he sighed and wore a pitiful expression.

"As I thought, convincing you will not be that easy. Anyway, let’s continue what we were talking about."

*Green*

"What were we talking about?"

[Eradicating demons]

"Yes, that. Just as I said, demons cannot be stopped. So, to protect your family, you have to find and kill all the demons that might intrude into the city. The Thunder Emperor already has the technology to identify fully fused demons. But it will fail when we are dealing with humans who are working with demons. After all, we can only detect demons, not the evil in a person’s heart."

*Sigh*

"That’s why I formed the Nemesis Guild. Through the guild, I plan to eliminate demons, expose the people working for them, and fight crime. What great goals, right? So, would you like to join the guild?"

*Wink*

*Wink*

Just for fun, Oliver asked again.

Root was unimpressed. The screen lit up red again.

"Failed again," Oliver muttered.

However, he was not going to give up anytime soon. His brain spun to take advantage of the situation as much as he could.

’Grand goals and propaganda didn’t work. I need to offer him something tangible.’

’I need to exchange what I can to receive his service in return.’ Oliver concluded with a smile.

So, he changed his method.

"If you don’t want to join the guild, would you like to work part-time?" Oliver asked.

*RED*

"Working part-time comes with benefits. I could get you into the Hero Academy. I know you want to be a hero. He he he."

Oliver giggled.

His words seemed to have caused some type of change in the person on the other side.

They stayed quiet for a moment.

Oliver continued after a while, "Now, you are thinking about burying your dream, right? You are concerned about the safety of your family, and you want to stay behind to protect them. I can understand why you would think that, because I have thought of doing the same. But let me ask you this. How long can you protect them with your meager strength?"

Oliver took a deep breath.

"The demons will grow stronger with each passing day. For now, the heroes, SMB, and you might be able to protect them. But what happens when the demons grow unfettered and break through the defense?"

"When that time comes, personal strength would be the only thing standing between you and death. The same is true for your family. So, if you really want to save everyone, you should take on the risk of leaving today to grow stronger."

Finally, Oliver added, "That’s what I am going to do."

When Oliver stopped, a voice spoke to him through his earphones, catching him off guard.

"You speak as if there is a great apocalypse before us. And you are speaking as if you know for sure that we are on the losing side."

The slightly high-pitched voice of the young Root almost made him laugh. Oliver smiled and turned to look at the camera of his phone.

"Yes, that’s true. Most of us know that. Why do you think we are fighting against the demons? Their very existence is a threat to humanity." He spoke seriously.

"Why do you think I am trying to recruit you?" Oliver asked. But before Root could reply, he spoke, "Obviously, it’s to save our families from the chaos that is about to ensue. If you have any doubt, hack into the Sol Empire information network and search for the keyword—Luminance-0-S-S."

Luminance was the keyword they used to store prophecies of their oracle. Luminance-0-S-S was one of the last prophecies by the previous generation Oracle. It was a well-hidden secret that only a few in the world knew about.

How did Oliver know of it?

In the past life, it came to light through a whistleblower after human armies, except that of the Sol Empire’s failure to thwart the demons’ advancement. Apparently, they knew about the demon invasion in advance and kept it hidden from the rest of the world to advance their selfish goal, which was, stupidly enough, world domination.

Unfortunately for them, there was no world left to dominate after the demons ran rampant. frёewebnoѵēl.com

This time, Oliver mentioned the prophecy code so that Root could dig it up. Not now, but maybe in the future when he is skilled enough to hack into their systems.

"There is a prophecy?" Root asked, his voice betraying his anxiety.

"Yes, there is. Not many know of it."

"But you know?"

"Yes."

*Sigh*

Root took a deep breath. Oliver could hear his strained breathing from this side. He seemed to have finally hit a weak point.

After a long pause, Root finally spoke, "So, what work would I be doing, and how do you plan to send me to Hero Academy?"

Oliver smiled.

"Does that mean you agree to work for me?"

"Hm... Yes. Only part-time. I don’t want to make any commitments."

"Okay. Then get ready to go on a trip. You have to register as a superhuman before that."

"Hm? Why?"

"We are going to train for the next month. As you are now, there is no way you can survive the second round of the Hero Academy entrance test."

"..."

The second round of the entrance test was about physical fitness and real-time problem-solving skills. And it was tested by throwing the kids into a contained, mana-beast-filled island on Second Earth. The test was to survive in this land for two weeks without any help.

Most of those who passed the written test would fail at this level, and only a few would be recruited into Hero Academy.

Oliver was supposed to get into the academy directly, without going through the entrance tests. But because of Root, he decided to change his plan.

Oliver could have found a backdoor, like getting a recommendation letter for Root too. However, he decided against it because it comes with its own problems. So, he decided to train Root and force him to get through the normal way.

Root is capable of passing the written test on his own. With the second test, he can help because there is no rule preventing the people on the island from teaming up. He only had to get to the island and find the Root. The rest would be easy.

’Anyway, it’s not a big problem. These days, anyone can be a hero.’

Oliver said in his mind.

Then they talked for a few more minutes and formed a clear plan about what they were going to do.

In return for working, Root was given the reward of getting into the Hero Academy and growing progressively stronger.

Meanwhile, he asked Root to find one person.

The person’s name was Kai and he was a citizen of the eastern alliance who went missing a couple of years ago.

Root didn’t know who it was. Nonetheless, he agreed to do so without knowing how difficult it was going to be.

Kai was one of the four friends of Oliver and Root who were kidnapped by the demons at a young age and trained to be an assassin.

No one, not even Oliver knows about his whereabouts. So, he decided to use Root to find him. If there was someone who could find him, it was Root. So, he was satisfied with the current situation.

Like collecting cards, Oliver was collecting one friend at a time to bring back the team he so wanted.

’I don’t know if Kai would like it, but I will surely save his sorry ass.’

Kai would already be planning for his escape and subsequent revenge. Still, he had to save him out of the hell hole of the demons, as quickly as he could, he thought.

At night, Oliver reached home and went right to sleep.

The next day was going to be a long one. He had a lot of chores to do.

For example, he had to ask Thunder Emperor to recommend him to Hero Academy and let him through the first test, not the second one so that he can help Root.

Then, he would have to meet Sathyamoorthi again to confirm the investment amount. He would also have to bring Achara and confirm the Thunder Emperor was part of the deal.

Then, he would have to buy a car and get a license. It was not going to be easy since he was going to spend a large amount of money.

Then, he needs to prepare to leave the city and train. The training journey would be a long one, so he would have to convince his parents, and then explain it to the Thunder Emperor and even to Achara.

’That’s a lot.’

’How I wish I could sleep in every day...’

Oliver muttered and slowly fell into a deep sleep.

His lazy ass was ready to put in the work. But he so wanted life to be easy.
