Chapter 120: Titanfall

Root squatted next to the large black boat...

No.

He squatted next to the large black car, holding a paintbrush. He then hesitated for a moment, stopped his hand, and gazed at Oliver, who was beside him.

Oliver saw this and nodded confidently.

Root decisively dipped the paintbrush into a can filled with pearly white paint. The brush tip disappeared into the can like his sanity.

Now, the insane Root had no hesitation or doubt. He swirled the paintbrush for a while and stood up.

His hands moved like flowing water, swiftly writing in bold white letters onto the black body of the boat. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

[The Best Car In The World - Phantom Nemesis]

Once he wrote that, Root put down the brush on his hand and gazed at it. The twinkle of madness in his eyes retreated, and he returned to being normal.

However, appalled by the utter-shameless-evil-sinister-crime he committed, he paused.

Today was the worst day of his life.

It was also the day he committed the worst mistake of his life.

How can he hold up his head high and walk after doing that?

Root stared at the freshly painted letters.

’Phantom Nemesis was a good name. But calling a boat the best car was... The travesty.’

Root sighed.

Apparently, Oliver had registered it yesterday. But the name was supposed to be just Phantom Nemesis. However, the name was unavailable, so he took some liberty and modified it a little. Then, Oliver forced him to write the name, saying his handwriting was bad.

"Looks great, right?" Oliver asked.

"Hmm..."

Root nodded. But did not mean it.

"Still, it would have been better if it were just Phantom Nemesis."

Oliver also nodded his head. "What can I say, the name was already taken."

"Are you sure?"

"Of course."

After saying that, Oliver lifted his phone and checked the time.

"It’s time to leave." He said and brought Root to the rear door.

This time, they entered through the entrance near the vehicle’s back, near the anti-gravity thrusters. The air-tight metallic door slid open to either side and allowed them to enter easily.

Immediately, the spacious interior of the boat came into view.

The boat was divided into three parts.

The front was the cockpit with all the instruments and devices needed to operate the boat. It was lined with all kinds of displays, switches, and levers. It also held the seats for the entire crew.

The seats were arranged in a three-by-three matrix, with the captain or the driver taking the centermost spot near the displays while the rest sat behind him. The seats were also designed in a way to be comfortable for both sleeping and sitting.

The boat was not designed for long journeys, so the seats were all that was necessary. Seperate beds to sleep was not necessary.

After the front comes the middle portion of the boat. It held a spacious kitchen, useful instruments, a fully functional toilet, and some bunk beds, mainly for the injured to rest and sleep.

The third part was the loading area.

The engine and the anti-gravity thrusters were situated behind the loading area.

Oliver brought Root and walked directly into the cockpit.

"Place your luggage inside the storage area. We will depart in an hour. If you have to call someone, do it right now. I can wait for a few minutes." Oliver said.

In a moment, they were about to set off for their training journey. Oliver had already prepared everything that was needed and was ready to leave. To not cause any panic, he had already informed everyone that he would be out of the city for a few weeks and had gotten permission from his parents before leaving.

Root should have done the same, but he still asked him one last time.

"No need. I am ready." Root said and shoved the bag he was carrying into the storage area, tightly securing it.

"Okay, then let’s leave."

"Okay,"

A few minutes later, Oliver sat in the cockpit and pressed the giant red button.

Immediately, a signal was sent to the mana engine, asking it to absorb the fuel rods.

*Zhmmmzzzmm*

With a weird hissing sound, the engine started up. The mana from the fuel rods flowing into the engine was slowly directed to the anti-gravity drives in a controlled manner.

The thrusters kicked in and decreased the weight of the entire boat. The small tires under the boat, holding it off the ground, relaxed and suspension loosened.

Now, Oliver could control the thrusters and direct the boat wherever he wanted to go.

He glanced over at Root and made sure he was wearing his seat belt, and slowly pressed on the accelerator.

The giant metal boat slowly moved forward.

The boat was parked on a rented hangar near the city’s edge.

It slowly crawled out of the building and onto the runway.

"We will be taking off. Hold on for a second."

Oliver pulled on a lever, sending more mana to the thrusters. Soon, the giant boat floated into the sky gently.

The metal parts on the ship vibrated a little when it reached an altitude of a few hundred meters and stopped moving.

"Here we go."

Oliver pulled another lever, sending the flying boat streaking across the sky like a comet.

There were no plumes of exhaust or intense heat because of the anti-gravity thrusters. It just accelerated like a rocket without showing any sign and sped towards its destination.

Inside the boat, Oliver and Root felt their bodies lurch back as the boat accelerated.

Once the boat reached Mach 1 speed, it stopped accelerating, allowing them to regain their bearing.

"Wow, that was more thrilling than I thought," Oliver said, taking his hand off the control module.

The autopilot instantly took over.

—-

The boat was moving at Mach 1 speed. So, the distance between them and their destination shrank within minutes.

Forty minutes and a thousand kilometers later, the boat reached the airspace of another city of the federation.

The autopilot guided the boat to a landing area.

"The Titanfall city." Oliver muttered, looking at the imposing walls around the city.

It was a hundred meters tall, made out of sturdy stones and metal, held together by concrete and defensive runes.

The design was different from that of Dragon City’s.

"It had to be different..."

Oliver muttered in a daze.

Root was dozing off, so he couldn’t hear him clearly.

Rubbing his eyes, he groggily asked, "Hm? What did you say?"

"Nothing, I was just admiring the city wall."

"What city..." Before he could complete the sentence, he noticed the giant walls displayed on the monitors.

The sturdy wall was littered with oddly shaped circular markings. They were runes, a type of inscriptions that can channel mana and use it for different purposes.

"We reached Titanfall?" Root rubbed his eyes and yawned. "That was fast."

"Didn’t I say this was the best car money could buy?" Oliver raised his chin.

"Here he goes...again with the car..." Root mumbled.

"Did you say something?"

"Oh! Nothing! I was also admiring the walls. I hope we can build something similar back home."

The Dragon City wall was made out of concrete and crushed rocks. It certainly was not as durable as that of Titanfall’s.

"We could if we had enough material. But the real question is, would we need it? A trained S-rankers and A-rankers are more important to a city than a colossal, impregnable wall. They should have used the money and resources to train more superhumans, instead of spending it all on a wall."

"That weirdly makes sense." Root nodded. "But, what do normal humans prefer? The superhumans who could abandon them and run away, or the colossal wall that would stay to protect them forever."

The boat slowed as it closed in on the city gate. Oliver took over the control and drove it into an empty area outside the city wall with a smile.

The words Root spoke touched the crux of the issue. He liked the fact that his young friend could see through the world.

"That’s right. The city wall was made to pacify the normal population of the city." Oliver began to speak while effortlessly controlling the boat to land. "The S-rank Titan was a colossal creature made entirely out of fire. It burned the city and everything in it to dust before it was slain by the combined effort of multiple heroes."

Oliver paused to take a breath of fresh air before continuing.

"At that time, no heroes, no matter the rank, could protect them. The death, devastation, and images of charred corpses of people who were burned alive are still fresh in the minds of the people living here. So, the government had to build a wall to establish itself and prevent the city from descending into total chaos."

"They chose defence over offence. But I still believe that the best defence is a good offense." Oliver said.

By that time, the boat gently touched the ground.

"What do you think, Root?" He asked.

"You already convinced me of that. Why do you need to ask again? I agree, defence is meaningless if you can’t defeat your enemies." Root unbuckled his seat belt and said.

Oliver smiled and followed suit.
