Chapter 127: Lin Yue

The water around him parted as golden mana enveloped his body.

Swoosh

In a single, swift motion, he surged upwards, traveling more than six hundred feet. A moment later, the lake’s surface glowed golden as Oliver pierced through it. Then, a burst of water erupted into the sky as his body shot upwards.

Immediately, he molded the golden mana into wings, just as he would with blood, and flapped them. As this happened, the autonomous system of Phantom Nemesis, his boat, activated and flew towards Root’s campsite. Oliver flew from the east, and the boat approached from the south, both on a collision course with Root’s location.

One might think Oliver was overreacting, given his intense approach to the situation.

But was he truly overreacting? Consider for a moment: What if his negligence led to the death of his friend? Would he be able to forgive himself? The obvious answer was no. Oliver was never one to forgive and forget, and that included himself. He would never forgive himself for his mistakes.

Thus, his body soared higher and faster like a beacon of golden light. He did this either to reach Root quickly or to attract the nearby monster; both outcomes would have been favorable from his perspective.

Soon, he had covered about a kilometer and neared the base of the hill in the center of the island. Root should be sleeping in one of the trees there. In the darkness, Oliver’s eyes searched for his presence.

Finally, he spotted Phantom Nemesis hovering above a tree. The pale silver moonlight reflected off its body. While Oliver found it challenging to locate the tree, the boat easily did so thanks to its terrain mapping ability. Oliver slowly retracted the mana flowing into his wings; they grew smaller, and he descended towards the boat.

The tree Root was on, and the surrounding area appeared undisturbed. He breathed a sigh of relief at this sight. It took Oliver only a few seconds to reach and land on top of the boat.

Without wasting a second, he jumped down to the tree below and ran towards the makeshift platform Root had constructed.

Rustle.

Rustle.

His body brushed against leaves and branches, creating a loud rattling noise as he moved. Some branches cracked and creaked under his weight, alerting Root. However, before Root could react, Oliver landed on the platform and covered his mouth.

The glowing golden mana startled Root, but upon realizing it was Oliver, he exhaled in relief. Then, the anger from being thrown into the wilderness returned. He wanted to protest, but...

Oliver leaned in and shushed him. He looked alert, a bead of sweat slowly dripping from his forehead.

"We are canceling the survival training for now," he whispered.

"What do you mean?" Root whispered back, realizing something serious had happened.

"I found the presence of a strong mana beast in the region. No, it could even be a monster. We should leave." As he spoke, Oliver compressed the golden mana back into his body, sealing it shut. "The mana beast or monster could be an A or S rank. Escaping it is the only viable option," he added.

The moment Oliver finished his sentence, an ominous aura enveloped them. Without giving Root any chance to respond, Oliver grabbed him and leaped upwards.

Suddenly, they heard a roar, and the tree they stood on shattered. Something large seemed to have struck its base, splintering its core and shattering its trunk. Fortunately, Oliver was quick to react. By the time the tree fell to the side, he had climbed up and thrown Root into the boat’s open rear entrance.

"Ah!" Root exclaimed as he felt his body moving through the air and crashing inside the boat.

Meanwhile, Oliver pressed an unassuming watch and reactivated the autonomous system, sending both Root and the boat away. The boat received its instructions and flew up into the sky.

Once he was sure Root was safe, he gazed down at the ferocious maw of the creature moving towards him as he fell.

"A flood dragon," Oliver muttered, gritting his teeth.

The serpentine dragon was moving too fast. Its giant maw, with razor-sharp teeth, was opened wide, coming directly towards him. In a single bite, it could easily cut him in half or swallow him whole. Oliver desperately condensed golden mana onto his foot and kicked the air.

His meager control over the mana was not enough to create the desired effect. Still, his body moved slightly to the side, slipping past the gruesome teeth and open mouth.

"Brush your teeth, fucker," Oliver cursed as the flood dragon’s noxious breath wafted into his nose.

His outburst made the dragon angrier. The two long whiskers on its face trembled, and its eyes once again focused on Oliver.

"Damn it." Cursing under his breath, Oliver again used the air kick to control his fall and land on a giant tree nearby. The remaining mana moved through his leg and acted like an anchor, pinning him to the side of the tree.

The movement was skillful, but the application of mana was horrendous. Often, he couldn’t control the proper quality and quantity of mana required, causing him to waste mana or slip.

’If it were blood, I could have used it like my hand. Mana manipulation is difficult,’ Oliver thought, gazing at the dragon’s serpentine body flying up.

Then his eyes focused on the space behind the dragon. Four people wearing black clothes were approaching the flood dragon. Oliver had avoided using blood and instead used mana even in this desperate situation because of these people.

’Who are they?’ His eyes scanned them as the flood dragon’s body coiled up and flew into the air. However, he didn’t get any time to look at them as the flood dragon attacked him again.

The dragon’s scales glowed with a pale blue light as mana focused on its mouth. The golden horns on its head shone, illuminating the area around them. Pausing for a second, the beast spat out a ball of pure blue water, glowing brightly.

"Ah." Oliver jumped away from the tree, leaving a golden trail behind.

He still hadn’t used the full extent of his power.

The flood dragon was an A-ranked mana beast. Its movements were erratic and unstructured. Its eyes also glowed red. At a glance, Oliver knew it was an enraged beast on a rampage. The reason might just be the four people hidden in the darkness. So, Oliver expected them to intervene, thus, he didn’t use his full power.

Just after jumping away, Oliver saw the blue ball of mana slam against the tree, shattering its trunk, moving uninhibited through it like a small comet.

Thuck. Crack.

Thuck. Crack.

Thuck. Crack.

Thuck. Crack.

Four more trees fell as the water ball struck them down like a bowling ball. Oliver was stunned. The destructive power of the dragon was higher than that of the Cerulean Cobras. Well, that was to be expected, since they were snakes and it was a dragon. In a battle against a dragon and another beast of equal rank, the dragon always emerged as the victor. So, dragons were feared by all, humans included.

Oliver gazed at the black-robed figures. ’To dare hunt an A-rank dragon, they must be strong,’ he thought.

Then he hid his expression and ran towards them. He acted as though he didn’t sense their presence and lured the flood dragon, which was chasing him, towards them. His body jumped from one tree to another, leaving a golden trail as the mana covering his feet glowed.

It took barely ten seconds for Oliver to reach their position.

Once he saw them, he showed a perfectly natural startled expression. Then he heard them speak. Although he couldn’t see them clearly because of the hood covering their head, he could hear them. He was extremely interested in what they had to say. So, he focused on hearing them.

"The flood dragon healed itself. We were too late."

"We can’t let it escape again."

"Stop it and pin its head down for a second. I can kill it."

"Yes, young lady."

One of the voices, which declared it could kill the dragon, was feminine.

The rest were likely older men. Oliver blanked out for a second when he heard the voice of the young woman. His mind went back to the time when he was skewered to the crystal wall, pinned to it like a half-corpse, barely alive.

’The Abyss.’

The immeasurable pain he felt during his imprisonment in the Abyss made him stumble. He almost fell forward. Immediately, one of the black-robed people jumped forward and caught his body.

"Young man. You are safe," the elderly man who caught him said and stared at Oliver.

The familiar face made him want to throw up.

’Guild, Oblivion.’ Oliver’s mind screamed.

’Then that is...’ His eyes moved to look at the young woman. He saw her pale, bluish-grey eyes and silver hair shining in the moonlight.

’Lin fucking Yue.’

’The Crystal Moon of the Lin clan. The daughter of the previous guild leader of Oblivion.’

Boundless rage swallowed Oliver. He barely held himself back from attacking them. These damned people were the ones who had tricked and imprisoned him in the Abyss. Along with Indra, they were the people he hated the most.

Oliver’s body shivered, perhaps in excitement.

He dearly wished for a day when he could eradicate them.

Was this the day?

His mind unreasonably thought.

While he was thinking, the communication device in his pocket vibrated.
