Chapter 84: Demon 4

Monsters were creatures who lost their mind. But when a demon takes over its body, it uses its mind to replace the crumbled mind of the host.

Thus, an ultra-physically evolved monster with sanity comes into being.

A demonic monster.

One of the worst kinds of enemies humanity had to face.

Currently, Oliver was fighting against one.

The demonic monster broke out of the blood tentacles tangled around its body and leapt into the sky.

The giant body flew in the air and grabbed onto an exposed ledge above the pit.

Oliver felt a wave of air rush past him as he stabilized his body.

’It’s strong.’ Oliver quickly judged.

With a flick of its body, the demonic monster had broken through his blood tentacle that could crush a car.

’Maybe a B rank. Or even A.’

’I need to buy more time.’

Realistically, Oliver had no chance of winning against an A-ranker because of their natural mana protection. His blood tentacle that could crush a car would be instinctively repelled by them if he ever clashed.

In the case of a B ranker, he had a hope of winning if he could break through their mana protection.

However, that could only happen if the B ranker was distracted or if he had a weapon to break it.

As he was now, he had neither.

Other than the short alloy sword tied around the waist of Achara, he had no weapon on hand. It would not be enough to break through the monster’s mana protection.

Even if he broke through it, the monster was the apex of physical evolution. Its body was too sturdy and strong for him to kill it instantly.

’How the fuck did they hide a monster in the city?’ Oliver thought while closing his eyes and concentrating on his senses.

Suddenly, his senses focused and melded, creating a mental image of the world around him. He could even vaguely feel the presence of the demonic monster.

’As expected, it worked.’

While he grabbed the monster with his tentacles, he had marked it using his blood clots filled with his mana.

The monster’s thick fur was covered in his blood and mana, allowing him to vaguely feel it with his mana sense.

It was a new trick Oliver found he could do.

In the past, he was unable to use mana. Hence, he relied heavily on his ability to fight. But now, he could use mana, though meager in amount. This made it possible for him to combine mana with his ability. The blood clot filled with mana was one of the tricks he developed considering a similar situation. The inspiration for it was the night battle held in the Tempus Cult HQ.

’I can see it.’ freēwēbnovel.com

Although his thoughts were clear, he had no time to relax.

The demonic monster realised that Oliver was not a real threat. It was pressing his body against the wall, like a jumping spider that was about to lunge towards its prey.

’Retreat is an option.’

’I need to move her to a safe place first. But, will it allow that?’

The answer was obvious. The creature was sane. It wouldn’t possibly let an enemy within its clutches slip away.

Oliver immediately made a plan to do the best he could.

’I need a minute.’ He decided.

Everything had happened so fast that it had only been a few seconds since he grabbed Achara, and the creature attacked him.

’A minute.’ Oliver twisted his body around and made an action of running away.

Immediately, the creature reacted. The long arms and legs of the monkey pressed onto the cold, slimy surface of the sewers and pushed. The body of the creature created an audible crackling sound as the muscles and tendons flexed to launch its body at Oliver.

Oliver was prepared.

He crouched down and safely grabbed Achara, then a tentacle grabbed the edge of the tunnel and pulled in laterally.

It was a totally unnatural movement that caught the monkey by surprise.

Its giant body sped over Oliver and landed in the cramped tunnel.

Meanwhile, Oliver extended a tentacle to the pit behind him and pulled him towards it.

Instead of running away, he was going towards where the demons were. It was a choice he made considering almost all possible scenarios.

It was the only way he could save Achara.

’20 seconds.’

Oliver counted in his mind.

’40 more to go.’

Without wasting a second, the monkey lunged at him again. The vague, shadowy figure had no trouble moving through the suffocatingly cramped tunnel.

Its body maneuvered with ease as it attacked Oliver again.

This time, Oliver jumped towards it in a parabolic motion and used his tentacle to grab onto a wall and dodge mid-air.

He deliberately teased the creature, forcing it to move towards the area where he would land before making unnatural turns in the air.

This would only work against something intelligent enough to predict his movement and track his position. Oliver used its intelligence against it to buy some more time.

’30 seconds. 30 more to go.’

After that, the monkey attacked him again and again, but he dodged every time, its hands barely grazing him.

The larger area over the pit allowed him to use the tentacles effectively while his body swung around like a certain spider person.

However, the monkey was not that easy to fool. The moment it realised the way Oliver was dodging, it adapted to his weird movements and began to tighten its movements to force him into a corner.

Fortunately, the creature didn’t have any other weird abilities except the poisonous tail.

This gave Oliver a break to dodge it for one minute.

However, it was by no means easy.

During the last few seconds, when Oliver was dodging to the blind spot of the monkey, it predicted his action and flicked its tail upwards.

The fast-moving tail whipped out and smacked directly on his right leg.

Currently, the leg was hanging limp and flaccid.

The pain of shattered bones and crushed flesh was coursing through his body like a sensory tsunami.

Fortunately, Oliver was used to bearing pain much worse than that. So, he held on and manipulated his ability to move his body to safety.

The reason he couldn’t easily dodge the attack, even though it was predictable, was because of Achara’s body weighing down on him.

If he moved too fast, it would have caused more damage to her.

’Huh!’ Oliver breathed a sigh of relief when he reached the one-minute mark.

’It’s almost done.’ He said in his mind and leaped further into the tunnel he came from.

Then he checked Achara’s condition and threw her back. The tentacles moved her body ten feet backward while Oliver dashed at the monkey.

’This is the best I could do for you.’ He said in his mind and jumped towards the monkey.

This time, he had no thought of dodging the shadowy creature moving over the pit, protecting the demon’s base.

’Do you know how to swim?’ He asked in his mind and jumped.

The tiny body of the human slammed against the demonic creature.

The monkey opened its eyes wide and bit onto Oliver’s shoulder. The two fangs of the creature pierced into the shoulder and punctured the lungs.

Oliver grimaced.

He expected and wanted it to happen.

’Upon closer inspection, you are one ugly son of a monkey, right?’

Oliver exclaimed when he saw the monkey’s face with better definition through mana sense.

His blood, which was covering the entirety of its face, allowed him to see clearly that the monkey was a baboon. The kind seen in the rainforests and savannas of the second Earth.

It was known to hunt in groups, use tools, hunt and eat large animals, and even scare away larger predators by working together.

It was a creature known for its social nature.

The one before Oliver was not the social kind, it was a monster that evolved from the same species. The proof was the poisonous tail and night vision ability of the creature. The savanna baboons or the forest baboons had these abilities.

’It would have gotten the abilities after it became a monster.’ Oliver thought.

’Monsters were solitary, and their group would have avoided it the moment it became a monster. And finally, it would have been privatized by a random demon.’

"Anyway, Fugly! Let’s go for a swim." Oliver muttered and released almost all his blood.

The blood moved out, covering the creature’s head and body.

Soon, it wrapped around the mouth, eyes, and limbs.

The blood covering its head blocked its eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, depriving it of its senses and breathable air.

The creature panicked.

Oliver used the chance to pull the legs of the creature and forced it to fall towards the pit below.

"Rawwwwr."

The creature, which was silent and stealthy, let out a roar as it fell. With it, Oliver also fell down.

Meanwhile, Achara, who was sleeping above the tunnel, twitched. Her fingers and eyelids moved, signalling the return of her consciousness.

Oliver had used the minute he desperately fought for to replace her blood with his to remove the poison in her body.

He didn’t actually know how effective it would be. But that was the best he could do to ensure her survival.

An A ranker was not easy to kill. If she could regain consciousness, he knew that she would find a way to expel the remaining poison.

So, Oliver left her above and dragged the monkey to the depths of the pit.
