Chronicles of Sol: The Fall-Chapter 199 - Interlude Death Trap
The Warlord stared out his viewport as a monitor played in the background. It was just some Valorian news broadcast, covering their current war. Not really interesting, but it wasn't like he had much choice out here in the middle of nowhere.
His most recent campaigns hadn't gone all that well, but he'd learned a few things about the last Grand Warlord before his untimely death. His fruitless and costly campaign against a small nobody in this part of the galaxy was well known. However the exact location of that world wasn't so well known, he'd managed to locate that world. Of course he couldn't let his rivals learn of its location, so he had taken the precaution of destroying any reference to the planet Earth.
It was a treasure trove, and from what he had heard the planet was likely dead. The fleet had bombed it five years ago, but the Grand Warlord hadn't been able to mount an expedition to collect his spoils. If even a fraction of the technology the Grand Warlord had been after survived, he grinned as he imagined his own ascension. It was a shame they weren't going to get any slaves from this world, but at least their creations could be useful.
A knock on his door drew his attention. Just before a female servant came in, "Milord, we are nearing the target system."
He smiled, "Excellent."
Turning the monitor off, he left the room and headed to the bridge. Arriving just in time for the ship to drop out of warp. He grinned widely at the sight before him. Wreckage as far as the eye could see. Twisted and mangled hulks that had been vented into space and left to rot. A testament to the fierce warrior nature of the species that lived here, and the battles that were fought. The Warlord did give the Grand Warlord some credit, this race would have been a threat to the Empire. Stamping down on them before they could establish their own empire had been a bold stroke of genius. The cost, however, was perhaps a bit much, but he'd fix that when he took the throne.

There were a few things he was after, and he recalled what he had heard about the raid on New Valoria. He knew that he wanted the alien armor and propulsion systems. Getting access to some of their weapons would be nice too. Honestly there were a fair bit of interesting devices these aliens had created and he could just picture what it would do for his empire.
Setting eyes on a hulking alien vessel, lying dormant not far from the jump point, with several wrecked cruisers around it. The end of a battle in which both sides had died. Yet he couldn't help noting how many Cathamari vessels lay dead around it. For every dead alien vessel he could spot, there were at least four Cathamari ships of the same weight class.
"Helm set course for that battleship over there, and get a boarding party ready. It's time to see what secrets they left for us."
Little did he realize those would be his last words, the young warlord never saw the mines coming. Several slammed into his ship all at once. Tearing through armor to detonate against critical systems. One of which detonated inside the bridge itself, ending his life before he even realized the ship was in danger.
