The statue's eyes snapped open.

Blood-red irises fixed directly on me, cold and calculating, holding the weight of centuries behind them. I froze, my spiritual manifestation suddenly feeling impossibly vulnerable in my own inner world. This wasn't supposed to happen. The statue was just an artifact, a remnant, not a sentient entity with the power to...

To what? I didn't have to wait for an answer.

The blood-red material of the statue began to ripple and shift, transforming from solid to liquid and back again in rapid succession. The seated figure of Ke Jun remained in place, but at its center, a distortion appeared, a spiraling vortex of crimson energy that rapidly expanded outward, forming a perfect circular portal about six feet in diameter.

Beyond the portal, I could see nothing but swirling darkness shot through with threads of blood-red light. The portal pulsed like a heartbeat—thump-thump, thump-thump—and with each pulse, I felt myself being pulled toward it. Not physically, there was no wind or vacuum, but something more fundamental. My spiritual essence itself was being drawn toward the vortex, like metal to a magnet.

"Azure!" I called out, struggling against the invisible force. My feet began sliding across the ground of my inner world, inch by reluctant inch.

"I see it, Master," Azure stood beside me, his form unaffected by the pull. "It appears to be attempting to extract your spiritual consciousness.”

I gritted my teeth, trying to plant my spiritual manifestation more firmly in my inner world. It shouldn't have been possible for anything to force me out of my own spiritual domain, yet here I was, being dragged toward what felt increasingly like an interdimensional trap.

The pulling sensation intensified. I was now ten feet from the portal, then eight, then six. The blood-red eyes of the statue never blinked, never wavered, just watched with that same calculating intensity. The closer I got, the more I could feel the ancient presence on the other side. It was vast, hungry, patient.

"Master," Azure's voice was urgent, "the Genesis Seed—"

Before he could finish, the ground beneath my feet trembled. Thick, luminous roots shot upward from the soil, wrapping around my ankles and climbing up my legs. More roots erupted in a circle around me, forming a protective cage of living wood. The Genesis Seed, sensing my distress, had responded with protective force.

As the roots secured me in place, I felt my connection to my inner world strengthen. The pulling sensation continued, but I was no longer sliding toward the portal. Instead, I was suspended in a tug-of-war between two powerful forces—the portal trying to extract me, and the Genesis Seed anchoring me firmly to my own domain.

The roots began to pulse and with each pulse, I felt my position grow more secure, the Genesis Seed's connection to my soul reinforcing my claim to this space.

A high-pitched whine filled the air as the portal began to fluctuate. Its perfect circular shape distorted, edges becoming jagged and unstable. The blood-red eyes of the statue widened in what might have been surprise or frustration, and then, without warning, the portal collapsed in on itself with a sound like shattering glass.

The blood statue's eyes drifted closed once more, its features returning to that peaceful, meditative expression it had worn before. The statue solidified again, all signs of life or movement vanishing as quickly as they had appeared.

For several long moments, I simply stood there, the Genesis Seed's roots still wrapped protectively around me, breathing heavily despite being in a spiritual form that technically didn't need to breathe.

"So much for 'no signs of independent consciousness or spiritual activity,'" I muttered, my spiritual form trembling slightly from the strain. "That was... not great."

"Fascinating," Azure said. "And concerning. It seems there is some fragment of Ke Jun's consciousness persisting within the statue, despite the Genesis Seed's purification process."

"Fascinating?" I repeated incredulously. "It just tried to... to what? Eat me?"

"I don't believe the statue was trying to harm you," Azure said thoughtfully. "Rather, it seemed to be attempting to draw you into the portal it created. The question is: where was it trying to take you?"

I stared at him, the answer seeming obvious. "Where else? Into Ke Jun's inner world?"

Azure nodded slowly. "That would be the most logical conclusion. The portal bore the same energy signature as the blood essence that comprises the statue."

The implications of that were... troubling, to say the least.

"This is bad," I said, pacing in the air near the Genesis Seed. "Ke Jun might not be dead, he could be regenerating, gathering strength. And now he has a direct line into my inner world through this statue. And that calculating look in his eyes... was that actually Ke Jun? Is he somehow watching me through this statue right now?"

Azure's expression turned thoughtful. "It's difficult to say with absolute certainty, but I doubt it's his complete consciousness. Cultivators, especially those at higher realms, often leave fragments of their consciousness in techniques or artifacts they create."

"So, this could just be a... what, an echo? A splinter of his mind?"

"Perhaps," Azure nodded. "It wouldn't be surprising if some consciousness remained tied to his essence. However, these fragments are typically separated from the main consciousness, they operate independently.”

Relief washed through me. "So even if there is a consciousness fragment in the blood statue, it likely isn't connected to Ke Jun directly? It can't report back to him or anything like that?"

"That would be extremely unlikely," Azure said. "The energy required to maintain such a connection across such a distance would be prohibitive, even for a Civilization Realm cultivator, especially considering that the blood statue is trapped in an inner world. The fragment we encountered is almost certainly isolated."

"Thank the heavens for that," I muttered, feeling some of the tension drain from my spiritual form. "The last thing I need is Ke Jun spying on my inner world and sharing it with his main consciousness. That would only make me an even bigger target than I already am."

"Master, this doesn’t prove that Ke Jun is alive, it might be similar to the Starhaven Realm situation," Azure said. "An inner world in the process of dying, reaching out desperately for resources to sustain itself."

"So, what you're saying is," I spoke slowly, "Ke Jun's inner world is dying, and it needs... what? My spiritual energy to sustain itself?"

"Or your presence," Azure suggested. "Inner worlds are deeply tied to their creators' consciousness. Without Ke Jun's primary consciousness to maintain it, his inner world would be slowly unraveling. Perhaps it seeks a new 'host' to prevent its dissolution."

"That sounds like a trap if I've ever heard one. I'd be walking directly into his domain, where he'd have all the power and advantage."

"Yes," Azure nodded. "Much like you have authority in your inner world, entering his domain would place you under his influence."

"Yeah, not something I'll be attempting until I'm absolutely certain he's dead." I paused, thinking. "If he's truly dead at all. That Civilization Realm aura we felt... it was unmistakable."

Azure smiled slightly. "Even if you wanted to enter the inner world right now, Master, you wouldn't be able to."

"Why not?" I asked.

"The portal was highly unstable," Azure explained. "The energy fluctuations were chaotic and unbalanced. Attempting to traverse it would likely result in severe damage to your spiritual essence, possibly even soul fragmentation."

I stared at the statue for a long moment, then sighed. "Let me guess, the way to make the portal stable is to complete the remaining parts of the statue."

Azure nodded. "That would be the most logical conclusion. The statue appears to be both a representation and a functional conduit. Its incompleteness reflects the instability of the connection."

"So, to access Ke Jun's inner world, I'd need to find more of his blood essence to complete the statue." I ran a hand through my hair. "Which means either finding more of his remains or finding creatures or objects imbued with his essence."

I considered the implications, feeling a strange mix of wariness and curiosity. Accessing Ke Jun's inner world could be incredibly dangerous—walking right into the domain of a being who had already tried to possess me once. But it could be a great fortuitous opportunity.

I circled the statue, studying its incomplete form. What I couldn’t understand was why would the Genesis Seed create a conduit to a potentially hostile entity? It didn’t make sense from a self-preservation standpoint.

My thoughts then turned to the overwhelming pressure of the Civilization Realm aura I'd felt just before the statue's eyes opened. That raw power, that absolute authority over reality... it had been terrifying, yes, but also awe-inspiring.

Azure must have noticed my expression. "What are you thinking now, Master?"

I smiled slowly. "Maybe the statue isn't completely useless."

"Go on," Azure prompted, his tone cautious.

"That aura we felt, pure Civilization Realm presence. If we could somehow... harness that, or even just create the appearance of it..." I trailed off. "We've already seen the power of bluffing in the cultivation world. Imagine what doors might open if people thought I had the backing of a Civilization Realm ancestor."

"That would be playing a very dangerous game," Azure warned. "Such deception could have serious consequences if discovered."

"True," I acknowledged. "But having a Civilization Realm aura as a trump card, even if just for intimidation... that could be the difference between life and death in certain situations."

Azure sighed, the sound carrying a depth of concern that felt almost parental. "If you plan to experiment with the statue, have the Genesis Seed roots wrapped around you just in case. I wouldn't want a repeat of what just happened, particularly if you're deliberately attempting to trigger a response from it."

I nodded, my gaze fixed on the blood-red statue. "Agreed. Safety first."
