“Go to the riverbank and fetch some water, we need to clean and rebandage Lawrence’s wound.”
Tangde said to Beech.
The cabin was very rudimentary, with just one bed, where they placed Lawrence. They built a stove in the kitchen area, but no one would live and cook here under these circumstances.
Not to mention, the smoke from cooking would reveal their whereabouts.
It took a while before Beech came in, holding a large piece of bark he had peeled off from the surrounding trees. The bark was folded at the edges, barely serving as a container for water.
In addition, he had brought several tuber-like things with him.
“This is water.”
“While peeling the bark, I found some tubers. They don’t taste great, but they’re enough to stave off hunger.”
With hardly any furniture in the house, Beech simply held the bark while Michelle picked up the tubers that Beech had dug up.
Beech might look burly and formidable, but he was very careful. The tubers he had dug out were washed in the river, so they could be eaten directly.
Michelle carefully examined the tubers she held, identifying them as ordinary plant roots that were indeed edible. She gave one to Tangde and casually took a bite herself.
The taste was somewhat sweet; honestly, not very good. However, at this point, everyone was famished, and even plain tubers could taste sweet.
After quickly finishing the small piece of food in her hand, Michelle opened a small pack she carried, took out a clean cloth, wet it, and started cleaning Lawrence’s wound.
Lawrence had previously fallen to the ground, and his severed arm was covered in a large amount of dirt, making it very troublesome to clean.
As soon as Michelle began, Lawrence awoke from the intense pain. He opened his eyes, dazed, looking around.
“Where am I?”
Just then, Lawrence’s gaze sharpened as his good hand moved toward his body.
A small handgun fell into his palm, and he quietly pointed it at Beech, who was standing not too far away.
“Lawrence, what are you doing?!”
Michelle was shocked and swiftly knocked the gun out of Lawrence’s hand.
Beech, standing there looking stunned, obviously hadn’t expected Lawrence to point a gun at him.
“This isn’t Beech’s fault!”
After knocking the gun from Lawrence’s hand, Michelle stepped forward and pushed him back down onto the bed.
“In that situation, if he hadn’t cut off your arm, you wouldn’t have survived. By now, it would probably be infected with venom and turned into a mass of pus.”
Lawrence’s head hit the wooden board behind him. He couldn’t help but grunt in pain as stars flashed before his eyes.
He reached out as if to say something, but a strong wave of nausea overwhelmed him.
He said intermittently, “Kill, kill them…”
“Let him rest for a while.”
Tangde finished the tuber in his hand and handed a syringe to Michelle.
Michelle nodded and injected the medicine from the syringe into Lawrence’s body.
“Beech reacted very quickly, but some venom still entered the bloodstream. The dose isn’t high, not enough to be fatal, but it will affect his nerves.”
Tangde glanced at Beech and patted the latter’s shoulder, “Don’t take it to heart, Lawrence didn’t mean it.”
“For a Demon Hunter, being injured almost signifies the end of their career.”
After the injection, Lawrence quickly fell into a deep sleep, and Michelle began to swiftly treat his wound.
Cleaning, then cutting away some of the necrotic flesh. Michelle was aware that river water was not clean, but she had little choice at the moment.
Finally, she thoroughly disinfected the surface of the wound before injecting the proper medication and dressing it. Upon seeing Lawrence’s condition becoming stable, Michelle completely relaxed.
“Take a break, eat something.”
Tangde said from the side.
The caloric content of the plant tubers was minimal. After consuming them, the sensation of hunger did not subside but grew even stronger.
The tubers were full of water, though, and while they didn’t supply energy, they could alleviate some of the body’s hunger and thirst.
After resting for a while, Tangde felt the dullness in his head not only persist but worsen. He knew it was a consequence of the continuous exertion in the fight.
“Beech, go and bring Carl some food, and ask him how things are going over there,”
“If the situation is relatively stable, then let’s rest here for a bit to ease our fatigue and heal our injuries,”
Tangde said to Beech.
Beech nodded, picked up a few quick stems, and turned to leave.
While Michelle was still in good condition, Tangde’s complexion grew worse. He leaned against the window watching Beech exit, his eyes heavy with drowsiness, and without realizing it, he fell into a deep sleep.
In a daze, he thought he heard someone enter the room.
His eyelids felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead, he struggled to open them but could only pr the tiniest slit.
A tall shadow walked in from the darkness outside.
“How is it, what did Carl say?”
Tangde asked groggily.
“I’ve delivered the food. He said it was delicious,”
“Everything’s normal, you rest easy,”
Beech’s voice sounded somewhat strange, but Tangde was just too exhausted, and the taut string in his brain was nearly snapping.
After hearing Beech’s words, he could no longer suppress the tiredness in his heart. He closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
Watching the three people in the room succumb to sleep, a satisfied smile appeared on Beech’s face.
“Since you’re so exhausted, it’s better not to wake up again,”
Having said this, he shifted his robust body and left the cabin.
The sky began to brighten, and the night was about to end.
Carl was crouching in the dark; although he couldn’t see through the cloak of night, spirit mediums observe the world differently from ordinary people.
When their vision is compromised, they prefer to sense the changes in the environment around them through the spirits wandering in the void.
All was calm.
But for some reason, Carl still felt an uneasiness in his heart.
“So much time has passed, why is there not a single message from the cabin?”
“How odd, why would Captain Tangde bring everyone here?”
Carl turned his head, looking towards the dimly discernible cabin in the darkness, the unease in his heart growing stronger.
“No, this is too strange!”
“I must go back and check,”
Resolved, he leaped down from the treetop and ran swiftly towards the cabin.
The distant cabin was silent; at this moment, just before dawn, in the exchange between night and day, it was as quiet as a grave.
Crack! Crack!
Before Carl got near, a strange noise came from a distance. As he got closer, Carl saw a strong figure swinging something in the field.
“Beech?”
“What are you doing?”
Carl instinctively slowed his pace.
Thud!
The hoe was thrown on the ground, and the figure in the field slowly straightened up, turning slightly to reveal a strange face.
“Oh… you mean me?”
“Of course, I’m preparing food for you all,”
Carl’s scalp tingled, and he couldn’t help but look towards the field, where amidst the red-brown soil, sections of rotting corpses were turned over.
“Buried for so long, there’s not much delicious left,”
