Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Use Her Wine Glass.

In early October, Huo Heng officially announced his retirement from the industry, and the whirlwind of public opinion finally began to subside. Director Meng, displaying some rare benevolence, granted the entire crew a three-day vacation.

“I’m dead tired,” Xiaodong, who had stayed up late with the crew for several nights, held deep resentment towards Director Meng, “Director Meng is definitely the director who loves to shoot night scenes the most.”

Indeed, he was the director who could most torment his actors.

Shen Zhiyi was no less exhausted than her, lacking even the strength to talk. She had filmed an emotionally devastating scene seven or eight times and had screamed until her throat was hoarse, “You should also rest for a few days, don’t worry about me.”

Xiaodong shook her head, “That won’t do; you have that engagement party to attend tomorrow, I’ll take you there.”

It was Qin Xiaoran’s engagement party; she had sent the invitation well in advance, instructing Shen Zhiyi to definitely attend. They had maintained contact ever since they met and their relationship was quite good. Given the bride-to-be had specifically invited her, it would be inappropriate not to attend such an important occasion.

“They’re sending a car to pick me up.”

The engagement party was at an estate arranged by the groom’s side, quite far away. Qin Xiaoran had said they would take care of the transportation.

“I see,” Xiaodong, yawning, said, “then I’m relieved. I’ll send your evening gown to you later.”

She was so tired that Shen Zhiyi fell asleep as soon as she got home, and when she opened her eyes, it was already noon the next day. She felt soft and limp from too much sleep. Glancing at the time, she noticed the makeup artist she had scheduled would soon arrive, so she hurried to get ready.

After getting everything ready, Qin Xiaoran sent her a message saying the car to pick her up had already been dispatched, telling her to rest assured.

Shen Zhiyi then waited quietly for the car to arrive.

However, Qin Xiaoran had already started playing her cunning game.

While changing into her evening gown, she called Pei Yu, “Brother Pei Yu!”

As the Qin Family’s daughter’s engagement party, Pei Yu was of course attending. He had already set off from Huating. Pei Yu responded faintly, his voice reflecting a lack of enthusiasm.

Qin Xiaoran, with a tone suggesting “something terrible has happened,” pitifully said, “I forgot to arrange for Sister Zhiyi’s ride, and now I can’t find any available car at the moment. Brother Pei Yu, could you please pick up Sister Zhiyi?”

There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment.

Qin Xiaoran added, “If it’s inconvenient for Brother Pei Yu, then I’ll find someone else to help…”

After a pause, Pei Yu spoke without emotion, “Address.”

“Okay!”

The car arrived earlier than the scheduled time. Shen Zhiyi carefully descended the steps, holding up her gown’s hem, and as the rear car door slowly opened, her motion to get inside froze suddenly.

Pei Yu was sitting inside the car, dressed in a neatly tailored black suit which accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist. Perhaps it was her misperception, but he seemed to have lost some weight, his features looking even sharper, his dark eyes cold and unfriendly.

He only glanced at her once, a man of few words, even miserly with his speech, “Xiaoran asked me to pick you up.”

She was to share a car with him?

Shen Zhiyi hesitated; then, she received a message from Qin Xiaoran, who appeared to have accidentally left her off the car arrangement. She instructed Shen Zhiyi to ride with Pei Yu and urged her to hurry so as not to be late.

Shen Zhiyi pursed her lips, “If it bothers you…”

She could take a taxi there.

Pei Yu lifted his gaze, his tone cold, “Get in the car.”

How fierce.

Shen Zhiyi, holding her gown, climbed into the car with some difficulty. Suddenly, a hand reached out in front of her. Pei Yu still retained his indifferent demeanor, not even glancing her way, but simply opened his palm towards her.

She lowered her eyes and did not touch his hand, settling into the seat and straightening her gown.

Pei Yu took a few seconds longer before drawing his hand back, clenching it tightly, then turned his head to look out the window.

Until they reached the estate, the two of them hadn’t spoken a word.

The engagement party for Qin Xiaoran was bustling with many guests. Although she “forgot” to arrange for a car to pick Shen Zhiyi up, she hadn’t forgotten to arrange a seat for her, and it was a table very close to the front.

When everyone had taken their seats, it was a surprise to discover that Meng Qiming was also at this table.

Meng Qiming seemed quite astonished that she would know Qin Xiaoran, but he didn’t ask further and simply smiled at her, recognizing the confusion in her eyes, “Xiaoran and I are cousins.”

Their seats were next to each other, making conversation easy, so Shen Zhiyi chatted with him intermittently.

“May I call you Zhiyi?” Meng Qiming asked with a warm smile, “I always feel ‘Miss Shen’ is too distant.”

Having a business relationship and having met a few times, Shen Zhiyi had a favorable impression of him, “Sure.”

“Oh, you know each other?”

Qin Xiaoran strolled over, surprised to see them chatting, her eyes flitting back and forth between the two.

She had specifically arranged a table of strangers for Shen Zhiyi and had even placed Pei Yu among these strangers, sure that the pair would not be able to chat throughout the event.

Yet, the unexpected occurred.

“Zhiyi and I are friends,” Meng Qiming said with a smile, “She’s the spokesperson for CN.”

Realizing this connection was an oversight, Qin Xiaoran saw more guests approaching and quickly took the seat beside Shen Zhiyi, searching the crowd for the person she was looking for.

“Brother Pei Yu!”

Relieved to see Pei Yu, Qin Xiaoran stood up to offer her seat, “Brother Pei Yu, sit here, you guys chat. I’ll go check elsewhere.”

It was then Shen Zhiyi realized Qin Xiaoran’s ulterior motives. With Qin Fang and Fu Songzhi at another table, she had deliberately arranged for Pei Yu to be seated at her table, making her intentions all too obvious.

Pei Yu seemed to have noticed as well, his expression chilly.

He didn’t ask to change seats, his gaze sweeping past Meng Qiming, remembering the man who, just like now, had taken the seat closest to Shen Zhiyi.

Pei Yu sat down in the seat on the other side of Shen Zhiyi, pouring himself a glass of wine.

Meng Qiming, unaware of Qin Xiaoran’s intentions and ignorant of the fact that Shen Zhiyi and Pei Yu had met before, started a brief conversation with Pei Yu. Seeing that the latter wasn’t interested in chatting more, he continued to talk with Shen Zhiyi about recent events, keen to avoid any awkwardness.

“Did you take time off from your filming schedule to come here today?”

“No, the director gave us a three-day break.”

“I see,” Meng Qiming said thoughtfully, “My father didn’t tell me.”

Shen Zhiyi caught on, “Meng Director is—”

“Right,” Meng Qiming said with a nod and a smile, “he’s my father. Not many people know about our relationship.”

Shen Zhiyi’s eyes curved in a smile, “He mentioned he had a son in business, but I had no idea it was CN.”

After chatting for a while, Shen Zhiyi was called away by Qin Xiaoran to take photos. She casually placed her glass down, her wine only half-drunk.

A few scattered guests occupied the other seats. Meng Qiming greeted everyone he knew, and out of the corner of his eye, he caught Pei Yu picking up the wine glass. He quickly interjected, “That’s Zhiyi’s glass, Chairman Pei picked up the wrong one.”

Pei Yu glanced at him with long lashes raised, his eyes dark and pressing, his unhurried pose both proud and assertive. In a quiet voice, he said, “I know.”

He still brought the glass to his lips, precisely on the faint lipstick mark, and drank it all in one gulp.

Meng Qiming paused momentarily, understanding something from the unhidden attitude.
