Chapter 431 -417 The Sorrow of the Leaping Elf_3
With a flick of its tail toward Chen Ying and an indifferent flick of its tongue, it told him to come back soon, then ran off to chase the little flying squirrel, showing no signs of missing him at all.
This Lady Bai must be too happy to think of home!
He nodded toward Little Bai’s retreating figure, telling Xiao Hai to keep an eye on it, then said goodbye to everyone and set off on his journey to the Northwest.
He was to drive this car to Ningxi, where someone would meet him. The car had to be returned to Dao Meihua’s aunt, and the person meeting him would be responsible for getting him to River Source.
Little Jin’s special permit was always in his bag. This time, he was the only one driving. Once the car door was shut, he didn’t bother with the cage, letting Little Jin move about freely.
Little Jin was smart. It didn’t mess up the inside of the car and knew to use the dedicated litter box for the toilet, preferring to nestle on the floor of the passenger seat when sleeping.
Chen Ying had laid out a little blanket there for it, just perfect for snuggling up.
He drove leisurely, setting out at nine in the morning and stopping at nine at night, with an hour’s rest at a service area in the middle of the day.
So he casually made his way to Ningxi, only to find that it was Miss Dao Meihua herself who came to meet him.
“Why are you here?”
“I came to send those two brats off to the military service.”
Although conscription time hadn’t arrived yet, those with connections often sent their kids for early training at certain places to better and more quickly adapt to military life.
The Dao family’s children had an easy time joining the army; they could even serve locally.
But this time, Dao Meihua insisted on sending them to serve in a different location—to completely grind down their temperaments. If they continued to be indulged, they were headed for trouble.
Serving in the army in the Northwest was no easy feat.
Chen Ying’s face couldn’t hide his smile—the two stinky brats deserved it!
They were college students enlisting, which meant they were subject to a bit of preferential policy. Dao Meihua spoke sternly, but by personally escorting them, she undoubtedly was trying to garner a little more care and connections for them.
“I don’t have anything planned for the next two months, so I thought about your previous invitation to visit Er Niu. You’re not going to turn me away, are you?”
“Of course not.”He paused before adding, “Many of the equipment over there were sponsored by you in the first place. You’ve never gone to see how they’re being used. If you don’t go soon, they’ll be scrapped and you’ll never have the chance.”
Dao Meihua glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, a smirk curling up at the corner of her mouth, “Heh, reading between the lines, huh. Alright, I’ll go check it out and exchange whatever I can for them.” frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
“No, no, no, I was just saying—don’t, please. That scares me.”
Dao Meihua scoffed softly, turning her head to look out the window.
Taking the national road from here, the journey wasn’t too long. The scenery of the grasslands in summer was beautiful, showing a different kind of beauty from the Southwest Region.
Passing over a sea of grass, the distant blue lake dotted with cattle and sheep on the plains, with the reflection of Snow Mountain in the water, that kind of scenery could only be described as “exhilarating.”
“Let’s go, I’ll take you for a meal.”
Passing by a pasture, Chen Ying thought about it, then turned the car and drove onto the dirt road of the ranch.
After driving for about fifteen minutes, they stopped in front of a large Mongolian yurt.
Chen Ying honked the horn, jumped out of the car, and shouted for Sonam.
A couple of herder children glanced at him, recognized who it was, and quickly ran off shouting toward the ranch to summon others.
Sonam’s wife came out from the tent. On seeing Chen Ying, she paused, then smiled and came to greet him.
“I’m passing by with a friend and brought some treats the kids love. I promised I’d visit them last time; I can’t go back on my word as an uncle.”
While he was speaking, Sonam and the others returned on horses, not looking too pleased.
Yet on seeing Chen Ying, Sonam still rushed over to embrace him, “Doctor Chen, my brother and I were patrolling over at the pasture, and we just happened to find a trapped Przewalski’s gazelle. We were busy, but just managed to free it.”
He explained, then turned to look at Dao Meihua, “Is this your wife? Nice to meet you, welcome.”
Chen Ying awkwardly punched him, “Don’t talk nonsense, this is my friend. I’m still single.”
Sonam gave him a disdainful look, sticking out his little pinky finger. Chen Ying grew so embarrassed his face turned red, and the men around them burst into laughter.
Dao Meihua pursed her lips to restrain a laugh, then was pulled into the tent by Sonam’s wife.
“Don’t bother with the men, come this way. My sister-in-law made milk tea; it’s very aromatic.”
Dao Meihua sat down to drink tea and have snacks while Sonam pulled Chen Ying toward the back of the ranch’s fence.
“Today we found another Przewalski’s gazelle that had been hanged.”
Sonam took out his phone to show Chen Ying the photo.
“Didn’t you guys say last time you were replacing all the barbed wire fences? Why are there still fences like this?”
“Mostly, we’re using galvanized iron fences now, but some herders selfishly set up simple fences for their own benefit. We plan to work with the Administration Bureau to thoroughly inspect and dismantle all these illegal fences.”
Additionally, they aimed to raise funds again to build more life passages, feeding stations, and water points for the Przewalski’s gazelles.
“Do you need my help?”
“No need, we can handle this ourselves. Plus, there’s a domestic protection organization helping us. I’m sure we’ll succeed.”
Sonam and his brothers had been protecting these dear ‘Elf’ for many years. The sight he saw today was so distressing it made him want to vent.
Chen Ying patted him on the shoulder, “Come on, let’s go see the gazelle calf.”
Sonam shook his head, pushing down the heaviness in his heart, and led him to see the rescued gazelle calf by the enclosure.
