Chapter 435 -418: Does the Druid Also Have a Child-Gifting Skill?_3
“Go fetch your cub, look at your stomach, all shrunken. Your cub must be starving.”
Lynx Mother hesitated for half a minute, then obediently fetched her cubs. Indeed, there were only two.
They were as skinny as mice.
Chen Ying frowned; this was probably a new mother. She hadn’t chosen the right place for birthing either; there was no prey around to hunt. She couldn’t think she could just prey on livestock, could she?
She must have rushed in blindly and, after giving birth, realized that every herder kept their livestock closely guarded, with Dog Guards patrolling; she couldn’t find a chance to strike.
Chen Ying brought two milk bottles to the baby lynx’s mouth. Starving, the little cub bit firmly and drank vigorously; Chen Ying worried they might choke from eating too quickly.
Luckily, after the initial couple of gulps of milk, the two cubs mastered the technique and held onto the milk bottles to suckle, adorably cute.
“How many sheep did you kill?” Chen Ying asked while feeding the cubs, addressing Lynx Mother.
“One, and I hadn’t finished it before it was taken from me.”
“Taken? Who took it?”
“Those despicable creatures, using their numbers to bully a lone one like me. Once my cubs grow up, I’ll definitely kill them.”
Chen Ying pondered and guessed it was probably wolves.
Wolves and lynxes have a lot of overlap in their diets; if she wasn’t pregnant, the wolves probably wouldn’t have bothered her.
But seeing how disheveled Lynx Mother was, she probably rushed into the pasture in panic because she was about to give birth and was targeted by the wolves.
The specifics were unclear, and the village might need to help investigate the situation around. If there were indeed wolves, they had to be more vigilant and the best approach would be to drive the wolves away beforehand.
Chen Ying thought for a moment, then called Sonan and the village chief to the door, pointing to the cautious Lynx Mother inside the house, and shared his suspicions with them.
“Wolves? Possible, they were spotted last year, and this year, even though autumn hasn’t even started, they’ve appeared, perhaps, the wolf population in the nearby grassland has grown significantly.”
Sonan nodded in agreement, “Since the livestock-reduction policy was enforced, the number of Przewalski’s gazelles has increased significantly, and the population of wild rabbits and rodents nearby has also surged, likely attracting a lot of foxes and wolves.”
Foxes are slightly better, but wolves are truly worrying. Not just for the livestock, but for human safety too.
The children of the herders enjoy running on the grassland; what if they accidentally run too far and encounter a pack of wolves?
Moreover, while wildlife fears humans, that doesn’t help when faced with mad wolves, right? You can’t reason with them.
The village chief hastily arranged for patrols, temporarily leaving Sonan in charge for a couple of days, waiting for the arrival of experts from Qing Ye to decide on further arrangements.
Finally, the two little cubs could eat until their bellies were round.
Lynx Mother tenderly cleaned their bodies, then carefully carried them back into hiding and lay down by the opening, silently watching Chen Ying.
Chen took the opportunity to stroke her.
There were scars on her body, but they weren’t severe; another couple of days and they would heal.
The main problem now was food, now that someone was responsible for feeding. They would likely move away in two or three months.
It was unexpected that a mere thought of freeloading could lead to so much trouble.
Although keeping Lynx Mother and her cubs hidden wouldn’t be feasible for long without him, the chances of peaceful communication between both parties were slim.
Lynx Mother being extremely hungry would definitely target livestock, potentially causing upset amongst the herders.
But now, the blame could be shifted to the wolves. Seeing Lynx Mother giving birth under the siege of wolves garnered sympathy; she was a poor, admirable figure. Now that even food was being arranged, it spelled a fortunate life for the lynx!
At noon, they had a meal and drinks at Sonan’s house. By afternoon, when Qing Ye’s personnel arrived and checked that Lynx Mother and her cubs were in reasonably good condition, it was confirmed that all was needed were regular feedings.
“Bring meat with bones, mutton, beef, rabbit meat, all are fine. If it’s rodents, the skin must be removed and the organs discarded before feeding.” freewebnøvel.coɱ
The grasslands were overrun with mouse rabbits; previously caught mouse rabbits couldn’t be eaten by themselves but had to be disposed of collectively. Now, the children had a task; they could take responsibility for catching them, while the adults dealt with them and then fed them to the Lynx.
In the afternoon, while chatting with Lynx Mother, Chen learned that there were also two fox dens nearby with newborns, attracted by the abundant rabbits and rodents in the area.
She too just wanted to find a cave to give birth in peace, but accidentally provoked the wolves.
“Those bastards don’t have a shred of decency, seeing that I was about to give birth, they just wanted to force me to give birth on the grassland and then kill me and my cubs together. Humph, I won’t let them have their way.”
Lynx Mother would rather barge into human territory, even if it meant dying at the hands of the Two-legged beast, than to use her own and her children’s bodies to fill the bellies of that damned bunch of cretins.
After soothing the agitated mother, Chen Ying bid farewell.
“I don’t live here. My home is still far from here, on the other side of Snow Mountain.”
Lynx Mother sighed regretfully, thinking she could find herself a long-term food source; but no matter, it’s better to rely on oneself than heaven and earth.
As Chen Ying left, Lynx Mother did not show any sadness. For her, the blooming of flowers and the falling of snow meant friends met and left; separations were something Lynx had grown accustomed to.
That night, it was Meihua Dao who drove directly to the River Source Center.
There was a guesthouse at the center where they stayed overnight, waiting for dawn to move on to the rest station.
The next day Chen Ying woke up at 7:30.
He still had to collect supplies for the rest station, and he personally needed to pick up some small reagent medicines and medical equipment.
After being busy until nearly twelve, they grabbed a quick lunch, then with a vehicle loaded with supplies, headed for the rest station.
The road outside the rest station had been smoothed out a bit, probably by a road roller; even though it wasn’t paved with asphalt, it was much better than the previous detrimental dirt road, which was worse than rural roads.
Driving to the rest station, Chen Ying almost made a sharp stop that nearly threw Little Jin out, which annoyed him enough to yowl twice and tear through the seat cushion cover with a claw.
“What? Two more buildings are constructed?”
The original rest station only consisted of a row of bungalows plus two enclosures built later.
But now, in less than a month, there were two rows of concave-shaped prefab buildings across from them. Behind the prefab buildings was a small solar power station.
“Actually, I think here, wind power would make more sense than solar energy.”
Meihua Dao got out of the car, looked around, and suggested setting up a wind power station near the national highway which could generate a significant amount of electricity.
Highland is abundant in both sunlight and wind resources, and both are presently mainstream clean energy sources; the only limitation is the instability of both, hence the requirement for accompanying energy storage facilities.
The cost of photovoltaic power generation isn’t high, and the rest station along with a few collaborative units could fund it independently.
But a wind turbine would need at least seven or eight million a set, not including the energy storage system and related equipment.
This isn’t something a private individual could undertake.
Chen Ying only half listened and did not continue the conversation.
“Let’s go, I’ll take you there to see.”
Meihua Dao certainly planned to stay here a few days before leaving. Chen Ying glanced at the old dwellings on the left, then at the new prefab buildings on the right, and swung the steering wheel, deciding to go and see first.
His car arrival was noisy enough that people came out from the dwellings on both sides.
“Brother Ying, Brother Ying is back.”
Sun Qihai saw Chen Ying and ran over to hug him.
“What happened, why are your eyes like this?”
Chen Ying greeted him, then tightened his grip on his shoulder and squinted for a closer look.
“Have you not slept for a long time or what?”
“No, just stayed up all last night.” Sun Qihai rubbed his eyes, which were a bit sore, “Yesterday, suddenly a herd of Tibetan Wild Donkeys started giving birth in the marshlands, and I and a few classmates stayed up all night. We returned just after 6 AM today. There’s still a group over there watching.”
“Why did Tibetan Wild Donkeys suddenly come here to give birth?”
“Not just the Tibetan Wild Donkeys, but also Tibetan antelopes and yaks. It’s like seeing ghosts; there has never been any record of Tibetan antelopes birthing here. It’s possible for Tibetan Wild Donkeys. Most surprising was that a dozen yaks also gave birth here. You wouldn’t believe it; our province’s Livestock and Veterinary Bureau has sent people here.”
Sun Qihai discreetly pulled Chen Ying aside, “That building on the left is sponsored by the Livestock and Veterinary Bureau; they said they want to research something about yaks here.”
Chen Ying narrowed his eyes, feeling the absurdity.
Meanwhile, Meihua Dao’s gaze also turned towards him, thoughtful.
