Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe-Chapter 898: Consequences
Chapter 898: Consequences
After the Blackshore Incident, Brigham Flynn’s corpse was brought back to Ravenfell.
The whole of the Flynn Family mourned the loss of their dear patriarch. However, no one grieved more deeply than Elysande.
In Brigham’s final years, there had been a divide between him and his eldest daughter, Elysande.
This happened when she discovered that her father had betrayed a close friend to obtain a mana extraction technique—now considered the Flynn family’s prized heirloom.
Growing up, Elysande fiercely believed her father to be a stellar example of a righteous Magus.
But after learning of his betrayal, that image shattered... and resentment took root.
It made her feel as though everything between them had been built on a lie..
So, when he met his death on the battlefield, Elysande was beside herself with grief. She deeply regretted the fact that her relationship with her father had soured prior to his death.
There was one more thing that kept clawing at her...
The knowledge that her father had once been poisoned by a trusted subordinate—Alvertos, who was later revealed to be a spy for the Umbra Thieves—refused to leave her mind.
Though there was no concrete evidence, a nagging suspicion had taken root.
What if it had happened again?
Her father had been poisoned before. What if, in the end, it wasn’t the battlefield that claimed him... but betrayal once more?
That is why she requested Halbert Dawson to perform an autopsy on her father’s corpse.
After several rounds of thorough inspection, the elderly herbalist concluded that Brigham had not been poisoned.
Elysande was led to believe that it was Kissinger of the Umbra Thieves who had truly killed her father.
However... freewebnøvel.coɱ
Halbert Dawson had not told her the entire truth.
He had, in fact, discovered a foreign substance inside Brigham’s system, one that matched the sample of wine Brigham had brought to him before departing for Blackshore!
This foreign substance wasn’t a poison in the most literal sense, however. It was unlike anything Halbert Dawson had ever seen.
So he decided to research it.
Several months later, his research bore fruit. He discovered that the foreign substance had the ability to temporarily suppress the victim’s ability to channel mana.
In many ways, this substance was even more dangerous than poison.
Halbert became obsessed. He needed to get his hands on it. He had to uncover the source of this substance.
He needed to learn just what kind of Herbalist had the knowledge, the skill, the audacity to create such a... fascinating concoction!
So he dug deeper.
Carefully. Quietly.
And much to his astonishment, he uncovered a crucial detail:
Adam had visited the Flynn Patriarch the very same night Brigham had come to see him.
At this point, it was still speculation. But after connecting several dots, Dawson could tell that Adam was very likely to be the person who had concocted that foreign substance.
He had known the youth to be a prodigy in herbalism. The fact that he could become a Grade 2 Herbalist at such an early age spoke volumes about his skills.
But more so...
It made one curious. Where did Adam obtain such esoteric knwoledge? To be able to create concotions that were unheard of... It had to have come from an inheritance!
This was sound reasoning.
But at this point, Halbert was still not completely certain that Adam had been the one to poison Brigham Flynn, ultimately causing his death.
But deep down, he had a hunch. And he chose to act on it.
And thus, he engineered this whole meeting to get Adam to confess to his crimes.
In the end, Dawson’s hunch had proven to be correct. However, he now found himself in an unexpected situation.
In the end, his greed for knowledge had become the reason for his doom.
"I see..." Adam muttered under his breath. "So, that’s what happened."
"Y-yes... it was just speculation!" Halbert Dawson blurted out. "Please, Adam, p-please! It was a mistake! I was blinded... by my greed. So, please... f-forgive me!"
"Let me ask you something," said the raven-haired youth as he leaned in. "What was your plan if your speculation turned out to be... wrong?"
Halbert Dawson started to tremble. He feared what would happen if he chose to tell him the truth.
Adam’s lips curled into a wicked smile. "I knew it," he said. "You were going to frame me, weren’t you?"
"N-no!" Dawson waved his hands in a panic. "I swear I wasn’t—"
Adam interrupted him. "Where’s the mother snail?"
Dawson’s heart sank. "You... you know about the—"
He was interrupted yet again.
But this time, with a...
SLAP!
"Stupid bastard, did you think you were the only knowledgeable herbalist in town?" Adam sneered, his eyes spewing contempt. "Tell me, where is it?"
Halbert Dawson touched his swollen cheek, unable to believe he had been humiliated so badly. In a daze, he pointed his trembling hand to the table on the other side of the room.
"First drawer," he whispered.
Adam silently rose to his feet and made his way to the table. In the first drawer, he found a slightly bigger snail sealed inside a box.
This magical beast contained a stored backup of the scenes recorded by the snails connected to it.
The raven-haired youth effortlessly killed the beast. Wiping the filth off his hand, he couldn’t help but sneer.
"Were you planning to take me down with you now that you failed?" He asked, his tone laced with ridicule.
"I must admit," he added. "You’re quite the vicious man."
"N-no! It’s nothing like that! I p-promise!" Halber Dawson pleaded.
When he saw Adam walking toward him, his heart was gripped by terror. "Y-you swore on your mana! You can’t kill me! You can’t kill me!"
Adam gently placed his hand on the old man’s head, his fingers curling slowly into his hair. "Oh, Guild Leader," he murmured, "why would I kill you?"
He bent lower, bringing his eyes level with the horrified old man.
"You are much more useful to me alive than dead."
For a moment, Halbert Dawson breathed a sigh of relief, his eyes flickering with hope.
That was until he heard Adam’s next words...
"But you overstepped, old man. And for that... there will be consequences."
