Chapter 39: A Bunny

The room was quiet except for the soft crackling of the fireplace. Ronan stood by the bedside, arms crossed as he looked at the sleeping figure tucked under thick blankets. The black wolf ears atop the man’s head twitched slightly in his sleep, his tail curled near his side.

Ronan exhaled through his nose. He’ll be fine. But still, he hesitated.

After a long moment, he turned and walked out the door. As he did, a soft knock came from the hallway.

"Come in," Ronan said, and the door opened to reveal a slender young man with soft white hair and pink eyes. Elliot stepped in carefully, holding a small medical bag against his chest.

"You called for me, Alpha Ronan?" Elliot’s voice was quiet but filled with warmth.

Ronan gave a short nod. "Take care of him."

Elliot hesitated. He glanced at the sleeping figure on the bed, noticing the black wolf ears and tail. "Who is he...?"

Ronan didn’t answer right away. His gaze lingered on the unconscious man before he finally said, "Just heal him, Elliot. That’s all you need to know."

Elliot bowed his head immediately. "Of course."

With that, Ronan left, shutting the door behind him. Elliot was now alone with his patient.

Elliot moved closer, setting down his bag. His family had always been healers—loyal, kind, and uncorrupted, even when it left them struggling. But now, under Alpha Ronan’s protection, things had begun to change. He had been given proper resources, and more importantly, trust.

His pink eyes softened as he looked at the man on the bed. He looked exhausted. Even in sleep, there was tension in his jaw, a weariness that ran deep.

He wondered about this man... For Alpha Ronan to personally summon a healer... He must be someone important.

Carefully, Elliot reached out and pressed the back of his hand to the man’s forehead to check his temperature. His skin was warm—not dangerously so, but enough to cause concern.

And then—

A hand shot out, fingers curling around Elliot’s wrist.

Elliot froze.

The wolf’s eyes opened, hazy and unfocused. His grip wasn’t strong, but it was enough to make Elliot’s breath hitch.

Then, instead of saying anything, the man blinked slowly, looking at Elliot as if seeing something strange. His hand shifted—his fingers brushing against Elliot’s hair, his ears, then—

He patted him.

Gently. freēnovelkiss.com

Like one would pet a small animal.

Elliot’s face turned bright red.

"...Ah," the wolf murmured, his voice rough with sleep. "A bunny."

Elliot didn’t know what to do. He stayed frozen as the wolf’s hand ruffled his hair in slow, lazy motions.

Is he—?

The man sighed, eyes slipping shut again as his hand fell away. "So soft... What a nice dream..."

Elliot sat there in stunned silence.

A dream?

Did he think Elliot was an actual bunny?

Heat burned in Elliot’s cheeks. He had treated many patients before, but never had one petted him like this.

After a few seconds, he cleared his throat softly. "Um... You’re awake," he said gently.

The man let out a groggy hum. His black ears twitched, then his eyes opened again—properly this time. He blinked at Elliot, "Eli... We meet again!" Riven quickly sat up, and then regretted it, his cramps were being so painful!

Elliot straightened his posture, trying to shake off his embarrassment. "I’m Elliot. I was called to heal you."

"Aww don’t act so distant! We met before." Riven smiled.

It was true, and Eliott did remember. He was just nervous since this man was special to Alpha Ronan.

After trying his best not to stammer, Eli asked, "You should rest. You’re still recovering. Do you... Remember what happened to you?" He had no idea what happened to this wolf, the Alpha did not say anything.

The wolf hummed in thought. "...Some of it." He flexed his fingers slightly before exhaling. "What do you want to know, Bunny?"

Elliot looked at him curiously. He wanted to ask so many things.

Who was he? Where had he come from? Why did Ronan care for him so much?

But instead, he asked, "Are you in pain?"

The man looked at him for a beat before chuckling softly. "That’s your first question?"

Elliot smiled slightly. "Healing comes first. Questions come later."

The wolf tilted his head, watching him closely. Then, with an exaggerated sigh, he leaned back against the pillows. "Fine, fine. Heal away, little bunny." He wanted to tease this bunny a little but he seemed to be so dedicated to working!

Elliot puffed his cheeks slightly but said nothing as he reached into his bag, pulling out a small jar of salve.

"This should help with your injuries," he said, dipping his fingers into the mixture. He carefully applied it to the bruises along the man’s arms, noting the scars that ran along his skin. Some old, some new.

The wolf watched him in silence for a while before finally murmuring, "Riven."

Elliot blinked up at him. "Huh?"

The man’s black tail flicked lazily under the blankets. "That’s my name."

Elliot’s eyes widened slightly. "...Riven."

The name settled into his mind.

Riven closed his eyes, exhaustion pulling at him again.

Elliot hesitated before softly saying, "You should get some rest, Riven."

For a moment, there was no response. But just as Elliot thought he had fallen asleep again, he heard a quiet mumble:

"...If I do, you won’t disappear, right?"

Elliot’s chest tightened slightly at those words. He didn’t know what kind of life Riven had lived, but something about that question felt lonely. The big bad wolf was in fact very scheming, he knew that getting sympathy from Eli was the quickest way to his heart.

He hesitated, then gently adjusted the blankets over him.

"I’ll be here," Elliot promised softly.

Riven hadn’t told Eli about his period situation yet, he had plans of his own.

This time, Riven didn’t respond. His breathing evened out, slipping back into sleep.

Elliot sat there for a long while, watching over him, feeling an odd warmth in his chest.
