His Obsession Began After Losing Her-Chapter 57: Further Investigation
Chapter 57 - Further Investigation
Clifford exited the private ward, his phone pressed to his ear as he updated Noran on Roy's condition.
"How is he?" Noran's voice was calm.
"Still unconscious," Clifford replied with a sigh.
"I can't believe Ms. Lee would use such a method to get Mr. Roy out."
Karlene had created a scene at the police station, accusing the officers of neglecting Roy's health, leading to him fainting during their client-attorney discussion.
She threatened to file a formal complaint against the police for violating Roy's civil rights, emphasizing their insistence on bringing him to the station without a proper health check.
This accusation of police negligence had effectively shifted the narrative, making Roy appear more like a victim than a suspect.
"It seems Ms. Lee has successfully put pressure on the police. We also followed your instructions to have Lloyd Media capture photos and videos of Mr. Roy being taken to the hospital," Clifford continued.
Noran's voice was decisive. "Instruct Lloyd Media to cooperate fully with this. Since we can't keep this under wraps for long, have them draft a narrative that portrays Roy as the victim, not the suspect. Tell them to make it clear to the public that the police mishandled this situation."
Noran's strategy was clear: manipulate the media to garner public sympathy.
With Lloyd Media's influence, they could ensure Roy wouldn't be seen as the primary suspect in Anne's murder.
"Yes, Mr. Lee. I'll make sure everything is handled," Clifford responded, ending the call and immediately getting to work.
...
After causing a big commotion at the police station, Karlene managed to get the police to fully cooperate.
They feared she might cause more trouble, as she had done in the past.
Karlene was infamous for giving the police a hard time if they refused to listen to her.
So, they had no choice but to comply with her demands.
Karlene was going through the list of guests and staff present in the club that night when her assistant, May, notified her that Ethan had arrived.
"Please tell him to come in," Karlene said without looking up from her documents.
Immediately after May had left, Ethan entered the office and placed a cup of coffee in front of Karlene.
She glanced up from her papers and looked at the hot coffee before smiling at Ethan. "That's quite thoughtful of you, Ethan."
She picked up the coffee and took a sip. "Hmm, you even got me my favorite latte, thanks a lot."
Ethan sat down with a smile. "You're welcome. I predict we will need a lot of caffeine in the coming weeks. Any new leads?"
"There doesn't seem to be anything suspicious with the guests' and staff's statements. I'll need to go through the surveillance footage later. How about the internal investigation on your end?"
Ethan took a sip of his coffee and replied, "Roy's bodyguard, Benson Turner, claimed he was stuck in the elevator when it went out of service at the time of the incident, so he couldn't be with Roy. But something about his story feels off."
Karlene nodded in agreement. "That does sound suspicious. What else do we know about him?"
Ethan took out a folder and handed it to Karlene. "Benson used to work as Mr. Clifford's personal bodyguard and was transferred to Roy's team last year."
"So, he wasn't directly hired by Paragon?"
"No, his employment contract was originally with Roland Corp, but he was personally recommended by Mr. Clifford, so we agreed to his transfer."
Karlene's eyes narrowed as she reviewed the rest of the information.
"The elevator going out of service, Benson getting stuck inside, the 4th-floor surveillance camera not working, and Anne's body being found in one of the VIP rooms on the 4th floor... Isn't that too many coincidences?"
Ethan nodded. "Exactly. It seems orchestrated, almost like someone wanted to ensure Roy would be found as the murder suspect."
Karlene leaned forward, her eyes narrowing in thought. "Who benefits the most from Roy's downfall?"
Ethan sighed. "If Roy were to be convicted, Paragon would face a significant blow. The company's reputation would be tarnished, investors would lose confidence, and the stock prices would likely plummet.
On the other hand, the Carter Group would gain a substantial advantage. They could swoop in, take over some of our projects, and capitalize on our weakened state."
"So, you suspect the Carter Group is behind this?"
"Yes, but we don't have any concrete evidence at hand. The internal investigation is ongoing, and Paragon is currently facing significant challenges. I'll gather whatever information we can find on our end and coordinate with you," Ethan informed Karlene before asking, "Is there anything else you need from us?"
Karlene nodded. "Yes, although we suspect that Benson could be the mole, it would be helpful if you could forward me the list of your company employees' information as well. We'll need to thoroughly vet everyone involved."
"Of course," Ethan agreed. "I'll have the HR department compile and send over the employee records immediately."
Both of them exchanged more information, discussing their strategies and next steps.
After Ethan left the office, Karlene turned her attention back to the surveillance footage.
She spent the rest of the day watching the videos, her eyes growing tired and her back aching from sitting for so long.
Yet, she couldn't find anyone who looked suspicious.
The cameras on the 4th floor were out of service, and the backstairs where Roy got knocked out wasn't covered by any cameras either.
The only footage she had was from the other floors and corridors, where some guests and staff appeared distressed by the inconvenience caused by the broken elevator.
However, she couldn't pinpoint anyone acting out of character.
Just as she was about to rewatch the footage again, her phone buzzed with a notification from her family chat group.
Karlene realized she had been so engrossed in the case that she hadn't replied to any of her family's messages all day.
Her parents seemed upset by her lack of response.
Karlene quickly typed, "Sorry, Dad, I don't think I can meet you tomorrow. I have a very tough case on hand and need to get it sorted out as soon as possible."
It was a race against time.
She needed to prove Roy's innocence not only to prevent Paragon from suffering financial losses but also to return to Sol City and reunite with her family.
Linus replied, "It's okay. I heard you're representing the vice-director of Paragon. Paragon has recently become our biggest investor in New Valley. Please do your best, Lene!"
Karlene's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
Since when had Paragon invested in her father's company?
"I'll do my best, Dad," she replied.
Then Shuri chimed in, "Is the vice-director of Paragon really Roy Lloyd? I read from the news that he got attacked by the murderer after discovering his wife's body, yet the police suspected him of murdering his wife. They even forcefully interrogated him and caused him to collapse during the interrogation. Is it true?"
Karlene's lips twisted in amusement. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Lloyd Media had certainly done a good job spinning the narrative for the public.
However, Karlene didn't want to lie to Shuri, so she replied, "It's true that he's currently hospitalized."
"He's so pitiful," Shuri commented, "If there's anything I can help with, please let me know."
Shuri wanted to repay Roy for helping Karlene in their first life.
If he were the same Roy she knew before, she believed he must be innocent.
Karlene's eyes lit up.
Why hadn't she thought of using her sister's uncanny abilities sooner? Shuri always had an exceptional knack for sensing things others couldn't.
"Can I trouble you to help me look at some surveillance footage?" Karlene texted back.
Shuri immediately replied, "Sure! Send them over! I'll take a look right away!"
Then, Hana's message popped up. "My daughters are only interested in work. When will the both of you start dating..."
Ignoring Hana, Karlene closed the chat and sent the relevant clips to Shuri, writing a brief summary of the case in a private message.
She then took a break from watching the footage and looked through the employees' list that Ethan had just sent her.
When Karlene finally checked the time, she realized it was already past 10 PM.
Deciding to call it a night and continue tomorrow, she packed her belongings and was about to leave her office when her personal phone rang.
Assuming it was Shuri with a clue, she didn't check the caller ID and immediately picked up. "Did you find anything?"
There was a brief silence on the other end before a familiar man's voice came through. "Yeah, I just found out you hit hard."
"..."
Karlene was momentarily speechless, her eyes widening in surprise.
She recognized the voice. "You sound fine, Mr. Roy. I should have hit you harder."
Roy laughed, his voice warm despite the circumstances.
"Haha! I don't think there's any attorney in this world who would knock out their client like you did to me, Karlene. You've got me more interested in you."
Karlene furrowed her brows in irritation. "Did I hit you so hard that you lost your mind?"
Roy replied playfully, "Yes, I believe I must have gone crazy because the first person I thought about upon waking up was you."
Karlene rolled her eyes, a mix of exasperation and amusement tugging at her lips.
"Mr. Roy, do you know you're in deep trouble now? Everyone is working like crazy to get you out of this mess, and you have the mood to joke?"
Roy's tone turned sincere. "I'm not joking, Karlene. I seriously thought of you."
Karlene sighed, trying to maintain her composure. "If you seriously thought of me, please continue to act like you're dying. Don't appear too healthy before the public, got it?"
Before Roy could respond, her phone buzzed with a message notification.
Karlene glanced at the screen and her heart skipped a beat.
It was from Shuri, stating, "I found someone suspicious, Lene."
