How to Have a Baby Secretly-Chapter 48
After a satisfying and hearty meal, Sunwoo went back to the yard with two glasses of peach iced tea and the cake he bought from the café.
Kang Jinwook was still sitting upright on the stiff chair.
Although it was late summer and the heat was slightly more bearable than during the day, Sunwoo couldn't help but wonder if the only place that felt cool was where Kang Jinwook was sitting, seeing him without even taking off his formal outer coat.
"Here."
Sunwoo placed a glass in front of Kang Jinwook, pulled out the chair opposite him, and sat down, immediately sipping the iced tea.
He had drunk it at the café too, but even after two sips, he wasn’t tired of it. Kang Jinwook also took a sip from the glass, following Sunwoo's lead.
"It’s sweet."
He took a few sips as if he didn’t care much for it, then put the glass back down. Was he saying it was too sweet or just okay?
Sunwoo couldn’t tell from his expression, but he didn’t really care. There were more important things on his mind at the moment.
"Now, tell me."
Sunwoo lightly touched the glass, which had cold water droplets on it, and looked at Kang Jinwook. He didn’t bring up the question of why Kang Jinwook wanted to meet after his middle school graduation, figuring Kang Jinwook probably knew what he was asking.
"Mm."
Kang Jinwook slightly frowned. Was he upset with the question? Sunwoo thought as he watched.
"It’s so long ago, I don’t remember."
"That’s a lie."
Sunwoo immediately rebutted. When Kang Jinwook said he would talk about it at home earlier, his tone clearly suggested he remembered something. Of course, Sunwoo wasn’t certain since he hadn’t seen his expression, but he felt like that was the case. Now, he was saying he didn’t remember? Was he expecting Sunwoo to believe that?
Kang Jinwook looked at the slight curve at the corner of Sunwoo’s eye. His sulking expression somehow looked cute.
Choi Sunwoo and cute—those didn’t go together, or at least, it shouldn’t have, but strangely...
While thinking about that, Kang Jinwook quickly turned his gaze.
There was no lighting in the yard. The only light came from the streetlights in the alley and the glow from inside the house.
So, Kang Jinwook probably couldn’t see Sunwoo’s face properly. But the fact that he thought he could meant he was focusing all his attention on Sunwoo.
"It was so long ago. Of course, I wouldn’t remember something like that."
Kang Jinwook emphasized once more. In reality, he remembered exactly what he had planned to say back then, just as Sunwoo had guessed.
It rained that day. The rain at the end of winter was cold, and that made it feel even more depressing. Kang Jinwook didn’t like rainy days, especially the ones in winter.
But he knew very well that if he didn’t do it today, he would never have another chance. Now, he had only one day left.
Surprisingly, it took him longer than usual to gather the courage. He kept postponing it, but eventually, he decided he had to say something, since it was the last chance.
That day, Kang Jinwook was finally going to speak up about something he had been hiding for so long.
"I need to tell you something important. Let’s meet at the park near your house."
Okay.
The gruff voice had a tone of annoyance, as if to ask why he wanted to meet. But that was fine.
Just the fact that Sunwoo agreed to meet him was enough.
Just from that, Kang Jinwook could tell how much things had changed between them. That realization was what gave him the courage to speak.
Kang Jinwook put his phone in his pocket and headed outside. He put up a large umbrella and took a step forward when—
"Where are you going?"
A voice, mixed with a hint of confrontation, came from the side. Kang Jinwook turned and saw Kang Jin-tae standing there with a smug look on his face.
Kang Jin-tae, four years older, had gone to the U.S. for college and only returned recently. He could’ve moved back into the family house, but Chairman Kang had instead given him a separate house to live in.
There was no need for both Kang Jinwook and Kang Jin-tae to stay together, as it would only cause trouble in the household. So, Chairman Kang had sent him to live alone.
Kang Jin-tae’s mother had complained, but she couldn’t override Chairman Kang’s decision. The reason for Kang Jin-tae’s return was that he had gotten into a mess too big for him to handle.
Now that Kang Jin-tae had appeared, his intentions didn’t seem good.
Kang Jinwook ignored him and tried to walk away. After all, there was no point in trying to engage with someone who wasn’t worth his time.
But as soon as he took a step, Kang Jin-tae grabbed his shoulder, causing his body to stagger.
"Ah!"
"How dare you be so rude?"
As Kang Jinwook’s body turned roughly, his face flushed. It was only then that he realized Kang Jin-tae had slapped him across the cheek with his fist.
At the time, Kang Jinwook wasn’t very big or tall compared to the older Kang Jin-tae, so he couldn’t fight back against his strength.
"Adults expect answers when they speak!"
In an instant, Kang Jinwook’s eyes flashed dangerously. Kang Jin-tae was not an ordinary person either, but Kang Jinwook wasn’t easy to handle, and when they fought, it was always intense. Kang Jinwook suddenly stood up, ready to charge at Kang Jin-tae.
Kang Jin-tae flinched at the murderous glare but also, for some reason, tightened his body in anger, saying with a forced tone:
"Your mom’s at the hospital. The gardener found her collapsed in the yard and called an ambulance. Shouldn’t you go see her?"
Kang Jinwook, who had been glaring at Kang Jin-tae, felt his gaze waver. He immediately rushed into the house.
He asked the butler, who looked stunned, where his mother was. The butler, unable to hide his own panic, gave him the name of the hospital.
Kang Jinwook immediately left the house. When he arrived at the hospital, he learned his mother was already undergoing tests. He anxiously waited, and the sun set while he was waiting.
It wasn’t until his mother was transferred to a hospital room that Kang Jinwook noticed how dark it had become outside. He then remembered his appointment with Sunwoo.
Panicked, he searched for his phone but couldn’t find it. He must have dropped it when he had fallen because of Kang Jin-tae earlier. Kang Jinwook, not even thinking of looking further, rushed out of the hospital.
He ran madly, arriving at the meeting spot, only to find no one there. The damp scenery, soaked by the rain that had fallen earlier in the day, greeted him instead.
Kang Jinwook wandered through the park with dark eyes, looking for Sunwoo, but he couldn’t find him.
He wandered until midnight before finally giving up and returning to the hospital, where he learned his mother had regained consciousness and was on her way home.
The next day, Kang Jinwook boarded the plane with a troubled and gloomy heart, without being able to express any regrets or goodbyes.
Sunwoo looked at Kang Jinwook with a suspicious look in his eyes. Kang Jinwook noticed the glance and got up from his seat.
At that, Sunwoo’s gaze followed him, clearly wondering why he was suddenly standing up.
"I’ll come again tomorrow."
"Ah..."
It was only when Kang Jinwook spoke that Sunwoo realized how late it had gotten. They wouldn’t be sleeping together, and Kang Jinwook had work tomorrow anyway.
"Be careful."
Hearing him say he would come again tomorrow, Sunwoo didn’t bring it up. He just nodded casually.
Kang Jinwook looked at Sunwoo for a moment before turning to leave.
Sunwoo watched him cross the yard and then stood up. The sound of a large car moving beyond the fence reached his ears. Soon, the house became quiet.
The next day, Sunwoo got up late, had breakfast, went for a walk, then ate lunch before taking a taxi to visit a traditional market.
While wandering around, Sunwoo’s eyes landed on a delicious-looking fruit: a Hanrabong, with its bumpy skin and pointed top.
"Can you ship this?"
Sunwoo called over the owner of the fruit stand and pointed at the Hanrabong.
"Of course. It’s possible."
"Okay. Then I’ll send two boxes."
"Got it. Please write down the address here."

When Sunwoo answered briskly, the fruit shop owner smiled brightly and handed over a shipping label and pen. Sunwoo took the paper, wrote down the address, and handed it back.
To the executives of Taesung Construction.
After writing down the recipient’s address, Sunwoo put the pen down. Yesterday, when Kim Tae-yeol had told him about the past actions of the former sub, Sunwoo had briefly thought about apologizing to them. It wasn’t something he had done, but it had been something the former sub had caused, and he thought it might be nice to send them an apology, at least verbally.
Then, he saw the Hanrabong and thought it would be a good idea to send fruit as a gesture of apology.
"Are you sending something to your coworkers because you’re on vacation?"
The fruit shop owner asked curiously.
"Ah, yes."
It wasn’t really a vacation, and they weren’t coworkers anymore, but since it was a gesture of apology, Sunwoo just nodded.
"When will it arrive?"
"It should arrive the day after tomorrow."
"Okay, I’ll make sure it’s taken care of."
The delivery would arrive just before the weekend, which seemed like a good time. Hoping it wouldn’t be discarded, Sunwoo also bought peaches, cling peaches, and Aori apples for himself.
The shop owner thanked him for buying a lot and also gave him some plums as a bonus.
Carrying two full hands of fruit, Sunwoo bought corn and lettuce on the way back and, after some hesitation, added a pound of beef to his basket.
He couldn’t eat it himself, but he figured Kang Jinwook should at least have it. Sunwoo, heavily laden with groceries, climbed into a taxi.
Before getting in, he glanced around, wondering if anyone had been sent to keep an eye on him, just as Kang Jinwook might have asked. But there was no one this time.
Come to think of it, there had been no contact from Kang Jinwook.
"What is it, is he coming or not?"
As Sunwoo rode in the taxi, he still silently pulled out his phone. His conversation with Kang Jinwook had abruptly stopped after lunch.
The last message he had received included a picture of a traditional Korean meal Kang Jinwook was having for lunch. Sunwoo had sent a picture of his lunch, and this was the reply.
"Who cares about this?"
Sunwoo had said the same thing earlier, and he didn’t reply to the message. This time, he just looked at the picture briefly and put the phone down.
At that moment, he felt his phone vibrate. Sunwoo quickly looked down at the screen. This time, it wasn’t a message but a call. However, it wasn’t Kang Jinwook—it was Kim Tae-yeol.
Sunwoo, unaware of his disappointed expression, answered the call with a gruff face.
