I Am Tired Of Being A Hero-Chapter 214: Calling Home
Chapter 214: Calling Home
They returned back to the Davenport Police Bureau and Arlen went upstairs to give a preliminary report to the Chief before he came back down.
Due to the background, the Chief had always been agreeable to him, he had paused when he had told him about Club Lush but he had told in the end that he should do as he sees fit.
Arlen intended to do just that. The Davenport Police Bureau was small and they did not have a lot of specialized departments. Scratch that, they did not have any specialized department, not to mention a Narcotics Department.
He tapped against his trousers as he thought about what the woman had said. Emily had worked as a waiter in Club Lush but what she really did was escort business with a side of selling some party drugs.
Even though she decided that she wanted to go to college, she had refused to engage in the business, cutting a deal where she would be an ordinary waiter for half the pay.
He bit his lips, he knew that people like Victor LaGrine had this mind that their workers are property and they would rather kill them than let him leave. When he followed Anouk, they had cracked down on gangs, a lot of them involved in prostitution, gambling and drugs, their moral bottom line was almost non-existent. So if they wanted to kill her, why wait? It has been over six months since Emily got a deal with the Club so why would they choose to kill her now?
Or did she return back to old business? He checked for cracks in the walls and the ceilings but he did not see anything. There was no laptop either. Arlen rubbed his head, he had been careless, he should have really sealed off the room.
He took a deep breath, he did not want to narrow his judgment because of the information from the woman.
There was no sign of mutant ability either so there would be no help from the Heroes Association. He picked up his phone and dialled a number.
"Hello, Arlen."
"Brother Silas, I need a little help from you."
"Arlen. Shouldn’t you tell me something first?" The steady voice in his ears sounded a little upset.
Arlen rubbed his nose, compared to his siblings, it was quite comical how he had always had the best relationship with Silas, his sister’s husband. Arlen did not think that he was completely to blame for that, Both Anouk and Rey were not the ideal people to go to for advice. Anouk always had the strangest, out-of-touch answers and his sister, well, she was always so busy. Even when talking to her, there is a sense of urgency, like she is in a hurry. Well, as the official heir, she was indeed very busy and her table was filled up. Arlen had never participated in the family or asked to help her with some burden so he always felt guilty.
He and Anouk just left everything on her shoulders. Maybe that was the reason he liked Silas so much, he had never seen his sister smile so much as she did when she was with her husband.
"That friend I told you about is now my boyfriend."
"That is great, I am really happy for you, Arlen. We would talk about him later, preferably on a video call. You sound pressed, what is it that you need?"
"Some equipment. I am sending you the list now. I would like them today. Just send someone to teleport them. I need them for a case."
"Arlen, you know evidence obtained illegally can not be admissible in court."
"I have no intention of going to court for this kind of person. I need it as leverage. And Brother Silas, I..." Arlen hesitated, he scratched his ears, "Can you send me Bai Yu’s number?"
"Oh! Didn’t you say that you would never contact her again and she should go to hell?"
"I was a child."
"It was last year."
Arlen’s lips twitched, "Who said that I was not a child last year?"
Silas could not be bothered with him and he sighed helplessly, "I wish you the best in your case. Arlen. Don’t forget to call if you need any other help. I will get the equipment you need to you in two hours."
"Thank you, Brother Silas."
He switched his phone and turned to face calm hazel eyes staring at him. Arlen’s eyes widened and he lost his balance on the stairs.
Ravi reached out, easily pulling him back to the top of the stairs.
"Are you planning to switch jobs? The Entertainment industry?"
"I think I would make a pretty convincing ghost when I want to. Were you that scared, Captain?"
Arlen rubbed his forehead, "You did not even breathe?"
Ravi chuckled a little, they had returned when he went searching for Arlen, only to see him at the top of the stairs, his brows furrowed while he held the phone in his hand.
"Equipment?"
"Yes. They would be useful for gathering information. I have no desire to send any officer to go play spy. There is a device I saw when I read the company brochure. GhostEye is a micro-drone. I believe it would help us a lot, we would have the upper hand before the interrogation at least." There was no need to send anyone or to go and pretend to be a client.
Ravi looked at him and sighed, he could see how the next few days were already going to go. He did not hate it though, the sooner they solved this case, the better it would be for him.
He pulled out a packet of onde-onde that he had bought from the store and handed it to Arlen.
This particular onde-onde was made from sweet potato and soaked in pandan juice before it was filled with palm sugar and rolled around in a tray of grated coconut.
"To keep up your strength. We have gotten the surveillance. It is not good news so have some first."
Arlen took the packet and opened it, he pooped one in his mouth. The moment he bit into it, the sweetness filled his mouth.
"Thanks, Ravi."
Ravi smiled.
