I Am Tired Of Being A Hero-Chapter 228: Consoling Lisa
Chapter 228: Consoling Lisa
Lisa gave him a punch on his waist and the man rubbed his head in embarrassment, "I mean Officer Johnson, I am the one who let myself in. She had not been coming home for some nights so I came to bring lunch for her." He shook his hand in front of him, "I am not a reporter or anything."
Seeing Arlen’s strict stare that did not look impressed, the man did not seem upset, "I am Doctor Ethan Kim. I am a visiting surgeon from Alstria. I have heard so many good things about you from Officer Johnson." His smile was light and there was a little excitement in his brown eyes, showing he was sincerely happy to meet Arlen.
To Ravi, Arlen was at times like that big dog that one would be afraid of but when you get close, you discover he was truly friendly and happy to wag his tail at anyone.
Except today, he was acting differently to Lisa’s boyfriend, who was colder.
The boyfriend did not seem to notice and was generally amicable, "I heard you are short on medical examiners. I have a degree in forensics, if there is anything that I can do to help, Captain Sinclair."
"How can I let you do such a time-consuming task? Doctor Kim is more needed in the hospital. But thank you for stopping by." He dismissed him and stared at Lisa, until she jumped and escorted her boyfriend outside the office.
His back was tense. freēwēbnovel.com
When Lisa entered back into the office, Arlen turned to face her, "Officer Johnson, I hope you would be more cautious. This is a sensitive and closed-door investigation, you know that. Be more careful with documents regarding this case even at home." His voice was low as he scolded her.
Lisa lowered her head and bit her lips, "Yes, Captain."
Arlen hesitated for a second but still headed inside, massaging his forehead. Ravi waited five minutes before he followed his partner outside.
Not far, just next to the signboard of the police creed, a figure stood, holding a cigarette in one hand and the other hand in her pant pocket.
She was upset. Ravi thought, normally he would leave her be but since it was his own lover that made her mood like this, he felt like he had an obligation to make her feel a little better.
Besides, Lisa with all her flaws and her quarrels with Draco was like a little beam of light in the bureau. Her mood was infectious and when she was happy, people around her smiled so easily.
"Thought you said that you would quit," Ravi said, leaning beside her.
Lisa held her cigarette between her fingers, its end glinting in the gloom as the afternoon sun refracted through the creed glass.
Lisa did not talk to him, her face still visibly upset. She took a deep drag and continued smoking. She finished the cigarette in a few puffs and started coughing before she pressed the cigarette butt on the creed.
"The Chief would kill you if you left a mark on his beloved creed statue."
Lisa then turned to look at Ravi, ’You don’t normally talk this much to someone ignoring you."
Ravi sighed, "True,"
"Are you trying to console me?" Lisa said, turning to look at him.
Ravi did not reply but rather explained, "We just interviewed someone who met Mary Taylor with her mystery partner. She described the man, he is around the same height as your boyfriend, coupled with the scene of him watching the surveillance tapes with you...."
"So every 5 ’6 men should be treated with suspicion? Is that what you are saying? Because I know I was wrong but wasn’t the Captain too much. Just because of his height."
More like his eyes. Those eyes had been particularly kind and tolerant but these were not excuses to give Lisa right now, "The Captain is tense. You went to the police academy; surely you know the kind of widespread panic that would happen if the public learns that there is a serial killer in Davenport."
"My boyfriend wouldn’t..."
"You can vouch for him but we don’t know him. It is bad timing. You know the Captain, if it was on better days, he would love to have lunch with your boyfriend. After the case, you can introduce us to your boyfriend formally. Just call me when you introduce him to Draco."
Lisa’s frowning face cracked and she smiled, "I told him I would enter a relationship before him. I can’t wait to rub it on his face."
Ravi patted her back and wanted to head back inside when Lisa called him.
"What about you? Did you come here to vouch for your boyfriend?"
Ravi’s lips twitched, "Why else would I be here?"
Lisa’s eyes gleamed with the hint of gossip, "You are really not going to deny it."
"Well, I trust you would not tell anyone." He said lightly, If it reached the Chief’s ears, the consequences would be a transfer for him and he still had a year of compulsory service left. It was not as if they could hide it from their colleagues, either way.
Just one lunch and the oblivious Draco had already found out.
He trusted her. Lisa could not believe her ears and raised her hand to point out herself. At Ravi’s nod, she panted her chest, "Rest assured. Leave it to me." She looked like she had just been handed the state secret of the country of Avalon to hide against invaders.
Ravi’s lips twitched, this partner of his.
His eyes narrowed when he watched her now smiling face, "Your earring. You forgot to wear it?"
After the arson case, Lisa had told him about her boyfriend, happily bragging about the earrings that he had gotten for her. It was quite pretty with a delicate rose design made of sterling silver and a sparking green gemstone in the center.
Lisa never took it off.
Lisa rubbed her ear and chuckled, "The two of you even asked it with the same exact words. Who told you I dropped it somewhere? I just forgot to wear it in a hurry today."
"The two of you? Who?"
"My boyfriend. That is what he came to bring for me." Her eyes widened, "It is still in his pocket, I forgot to take it because of the Captain." She pouted, "Let’s go back. There is something I found in the surveillance."
Ravi nodded but there was a bit of unease in his heart.
