I Became a Farmer in Another World-Chapter 13: Betrayal and a New Beginning
Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Betrayal and a New Beginning
Upon arriving at the commander's location to demand answers for his actions, Charlotte confronted him.
"Commander, what have you done? Didn't I tell you to stay here? Why did you send troops to Ryutaro's location?" Charlotte asked.
"I just wanted to help you, my lady," the commander replied.
"Help? For what?" Charlotte questioned.
"Obviously, against the Demon Queen, Grace," the commander stated.
"What do you mean?" Charlotte asked.
The commander then explained his cunning plan.
"Listen, my lady. If we can defeat Ryutaro, won't we be able to threaten Demon Queen Grace into surrendering?" he said.
"So you sent some troops just for your foolish plan?" Charlotte exclaimed.
"Yes, but all of our plans failed because of that dragon," the commander admitted.
Charlotte could only sigh at her commander's reckless actions.
"Do you realize that you've wasted lives because of your actions?" Charlotte asked.
"Of course, I do, my lady," the commander replied.
"Then why did you still go through with it?" Charlotte pressed.
"Because for this plan to succeed, some sacrifices are necessary, aren't they?" the commander stated.
Hearing those words, Charlotte was visibly shocked.
"What do you mean by that? Do you think human lives have no value at all?" she asked.
The commander simply answered her question with a smirk.
"This isn't about value, my lady. This is about success. Don't you think they were happy to be part of this plan?" he said.
Hearing his response, Charlotte lowered her head and clenched her fists.
"Take back what you said! Human lives are invaluable! Have you never experienced loss? Just like them, they must have families waiting for them to return, yet you treat that as worthless?" Charlotte snapped.
However, the commander merely laughed at her words.
"Valuable? Hahaha! You're too naive, my lady. In this world, if we don't become the strongest, won't we always be trampled on?" the commander scoffed.
"Even so, that's no excuse to discard human lives so easily," Charlotte retorted.
After hearing her words, the commander quickly changed the subject.
"Enough of this, my lady. You should focus on completing the mission the king assigned to you," he said.
Charlotte then looked toward Ryutaro and saw him laughing and joking with his companions—not at all like someone who had been brainwashed.
"I've made my decision," Charlotte declared.
"Good, in that case—" the commander started.
Before he could finish his sentence, Charlotte interrupted him.
"I'm withdrawing from this mission," she stated firmly.
Hearing her words, the commander was visibly shocked.
"What? That means you're disobeying the king's orders!" he exclaimed.
"That's right. I'm going to defy the king's orders," Charlotte confirmed.
"Explain your reasoning," the commander demanded.
"You saw it yourself. The king said Ryutaro was brainwashed by Demon Queen Grace, but in reality, they're living peacefully, laughing together," Charlotte pointed out.
"That could be a trick. Remember, my lady, she is the strongest Demon Queen," the commander argued.
"And what? A Demon Queen isn't allowed to live in peace?" Charlotte countered.
"Of course not! They are human slayers. If we let her be, she could wipe out humanity in no time!" the commander insisted.
"Is that really true?" Charlotte asked.
"Yes! There's no such thing as a good demon, let alone a Demon Queen!" the commander asserted.
Upon hearing this, Charlotte posed another question.
"Then why didn't she kill me during our fight earlier? With her strength, I could have been defeated instantly," she challenged.
But the commander remained stubborn.
"It doesn't matter! She's still a Demon Queen! She cannot be allowed to exist!" he declared.
Charlotte then put an end to the conversation.
"Enough. I've made my decision—we're withdrawing," she announced.
The commander, now visibly enraged by Charlotte's decision, responded coldly.
"Very well, then."
"Good, in that case—" Charlotte began.
Before she could finish, the commander suddenly stabbed her from behind.
"What are you doing?" Charlotte gasped, struggling to endure the pain.
"I'm simply carrying out the king's orders," the commander replied.
"What do you mean? I already told you I failed," Charlotte coughed, blood escaping her lips.
"Oh, not those orders, my lady," the commander sneered.
"Then what?" Charlotte asked weakly.
"A special order," he said.
"A special order? Why have I never heard of it?" Charlotte questioned.
With a sinister smile, the commander answered.
"Of course, you never heard of it. It was a direct order from the king—to eliminate you if you ever betrayed us."
"But I never betrayed the kingdom, not even once!" Charlotte protested.
"Never? Don't make me laugh, Charlotte. You changed after losing to the Demon Queen, and now you want to claim failure? Don't joke around! Do you really think the king will accept such a flimsy excuse?" the commander scoffed.
Charlotte was shocked upon hearing his reasoning.
"Aren't you afraid of the church finding out about this?" she asked.
"Oh, that's an easy problem to solve. We'll simply tell them you were killed by Demon Queen Grace. And if the church doesn't believe us, we'll just bribe them with some gold," the commander explained.
"Do you really think the church would listen to you just because of gold?" Charlotte challenged.
"You really know nothing, do you?" the commander sneered.
"What do you mean?" Charlotte asked.
"Where do you think all the donation money goes? Why do people keep donating, yet the church's interior never changes?" the commander smirked.
"Obviously, for offerings," Charlotte replied.
Hearing this, the commander burst into laughter.
"Hahaha! Offerings? Don't be ridiculous. That money is used to buy slave women—to serve as sex slaves for the church officials!" he revealed.
Charlotte was horrified. Her body weakened further as blood continued to flow from her wound.
"No... that can't be. So that's why they brought so many women into the church," she murmured.
"Exactly! Now then, farewell. And don't forget to send our regards to the King of Hell, Holy Maiden," the commander mocked before leaving Charlotte to die.
"Is this my end? Killed like this... betrayed by those I trusted?" Charlotte whispered, lying helplessly.
From a distance, Ryutaro saw her and immediately rushed to her side.
"Oi, Charlotte!" Ryutaro called out.
"Oh, it's you, Ryutaro. Sorry... I must look pathetic like this," Charlotte weakly replied.
"So, are you going to give up here?" Ryutaro asked.
"What do you mean?" Charlotte questioned.
"I can heal you instantly—but that depends on your answer," Ryutaro stated.
Hearing this, a glimmer of hope returned to Charlotte's eyes.
"Is that true?" she asked weakly.
"Yes, so don't waste my time," Ryutaro responded.
"Alright, then. I don't want to die. I want to uncover the truth that the kingdom is hiding," Charlotte declared.
To test her resolve, Ryutaro asked one final question.
"But if you learn the truth, you might end up like us—hunted by the kingdom."
"That's fine. Even if I return alive, I'd already be considered a fugitive. I have no choice but to move forward," Charlotte replied firmly.
Seeing her determination, Ryutaro smiled.
"Good. Then I'll heal you," he said.
Ryutaro activated his healing ability.
"Divine Revitalization!"

Instantly, Charlotte's wounds vanished as if she had never been injured.
"What kind of technique is this?" she asked.
"A healing technique, but not just any ordinary one," Ryutaro replied.
Charlotte stood up, completely healed. Soon, Grace and Aurelia approached them.
"Welcome to the team, Charlotte," Grace said.
"Alright, I'll be in your care," Charlotte responded.
And with that, another woman joined Ryutaro's ranks.
What will happen when the commander reports the incident? What will the king's reaction be when he learns that someone who was supposed to be dead has been revived?
