I Only Want To Kill-Chapter 48: The Veil Beneath

The lightning bolt finds its way to Ian. A transparent shockwave suddenly appears.

It pushes back the barrier and completely evaporates it. Then it enlarges and covers the entire building inside.

In the center of the roof, a particular device is pulsing yellow light. It looks like a tree stump made out of steel. Four smaller legs accompany it and anchor the device into the building floor.

Blaze has seen this device in Dimon's memory. It is what Preston had talked about, a Barrier that can prevent Awakened from being pulled into the Void.

Blaze slowly walks forward, his eyes darting from person to person, naming each familiar face.

"Ian Yates, Principal of Akansa High.

Nash Sanders, gym teacher of Akansa High.

Wesley Dawson, Akansa City Councillor.

Connor Rodriguez, Secretary of the Akansa Trade Union.

The goons and customers all step back whenever Blaze moves forward. They all are afraid of him.

His short presence in the Roof has made a long-lasting effect on their mentality.

"All the high officials in Akansa are all here! Wow!"

Blaze says sarcastically.

"Almost all of the B-ranks as well."

Back in the Void, Blaze was curious as to why none of the B-rank Awakeners were present.

Even in Akansa High, where a few teachers are B-rank, none were there as well. Only the low-ranked students were pulled in.

Now he knows the truth.

They are all high as a kite. Their clothes are sloppy, and their faces look like they just woke up from a hangover.

The bunch of bottles lying around, trash littering everywhere, and so many dirty substances can be seen.

While the low rank and the students were trying to find a way to survive and get out of the Mirror Layer. These high-ranking Awakeners were partying, doing all kinds of obscene acts.

"You... You know who I am! How dare you stand here?!"

Ian shouts with all the air inside his lungs.

Blase walks up to him and looks down. His newfound height makes him much taller than this corrupted principal.

He remembers this fat old man. It was he who denied Blaze all the opportunities to clear his name.

It was he who allowed all the bullying to happen to him.

Ian allowed Jake and Veronica to do whatever they wanted. And when they broke Blaze's legs, Ian punished him even more because of their lies.

He was expelled. He was called a rapist.

Blaze did not understand it at the time. But now he gets it.

Ian was just trying to protect his own kind.

"What are you..."

Ian says, but Blaze doesn't even allow him to finish. He bitch-slaps the principal with his backhand.

The fat guy is sent flying into the air, crashing on a nearby table.

The big meat sack crushes all the bottles and glasses on the table. Then he slides off, smacking his entire body on the floor.

His fat and short figure reminds Blaze too much of Phuc. This irritates him.

The principal's foot was also stomping on some poor girl. Blaze can't allow that to continue.

He squats down to check on the girl.

"Are you alright?"

The woman lifts her head up. Blaze recognizes her.

"Wynona Ferguson?"

She was Blaze's head teacher. An actual teacher with a heart inside that goddamn school. She even tried to help Blaze when he was framed.

Wynona is a B-rank Awakened. Blaze was wondering why she was not in the Void.

He suspected that she may be corrupted like them, but he is wrong. She was simply captured and brought here against her will.

"You know me?"

Wynona mumbles, her weak voice is barely audible.

Blaze pats her head gently, trying to give her some comfort.

"I know everyone here. Don't worry. I'll take care of them."

He stands up, darting his eyes around to find Nadyr in the crowd.

"Are you still going to hide, Boss?"

Blaze says. He saw in the memory of Dimon how they addressed Nadyr.

Nadyr steps forward, eyes hawking at Blaze like a predator assessing its prey.

"Leave this place. And I will act like this attack never happened."

Blaze laughs hysterically. His entire body is shaking, and his back curves unnaturally.

"Are you really still trying to talk your way out of this?

I know that you were a soldier. A very good one at that.

What happened? Why did you become this much of a coward?"

Blaze is determined to save Alyson. His will blocks off all fear and hesitation. But in truth, he was afraid to a degree.

In William's memory, Nadyr was a monster. A man that makes everyone tremble with his very presence.

He is harsh, cold, and not afraid of anybody. At least, that is what is in William's memory.

But now that Blaze sees the real man behind. He was nothing more than a scared little boy who avoided all confrontation with Blaze.

So this is the true face of all those tyrants people are afraid of.

Phuc was pathetic in his final moment. Jake lost his tough persona the moment he became the weak. Veronica is nothing more than a sniveling baby.

William lost all his dignity just after a few hours of burning. Well, it's not like he has any to begin with.

And now, Nadyr Brozovic. His right palm trembles lightly, the fingers twitching from time to time.

The guy clenches and stretches his fist repeatedly to try and stop the trembling, but it doesn't help at all.

Blaze tilts his head and looks at Nadyr's palm. He does not hide his contempt at all.

The guy hides his hand behind his back like a child that just did something wrong.

"Why are you here?"

Nadyr musters up the courage to speak.

"Why do you do this? Why kill so many of us?

Who sent you?

Whatever price they give, I can double it for you. Triple if you aren't satisfied."

"Hahaha!

My gosh, Nadyr. You still don't get it, do you?"

Blaze's joking tone suddenly changes. The deep, dark voice of death comes back to haunt everyone that is standing here.

"No one. No criminals in this place will walk out of here alive.

You. Ian Yates. The Secretary. The sergeant...

Every single one of you will die by my hand."

Nadyr takes a deep breath. His right hand stops shaking, and he pulls out a gun from behind.

"Your sixth power is very strong. You make us feel our deepest fear. You control my men to kill themselves.

It must be some sort of telepathic power, right?

It can easily wipe us all out. None of us have any mental superpower to combat your power.

Unfortunately for you. This thing here is built especially for people like you."

Nadyr puts his hand on the Barrier device.

"You know... This thing does not only prevent people from getting sucked inside the Void.

It can also neutralize every superpower in its effective radius.

This means that... You are nothing more than a normal person right now."

Nadyr aims his gun at Blaze.

"You should have gotten away when I gave you the chance."

Ian wakes up. Several glass pieces stick inside his flesh. He is now a bloody, ugly porcupine.

"It hurts! It hurts!" Ian yells in pain.

The fainting spares him from feeling the pain, but now it drives him insane.

"You will regret this, motherfucker! I'll make sure we parade your naked body on the street!

The mayor will execute you!"

Blaze raises his wand toward Ian.

"I told you. All power is neutralized here." Nadyr says.

"Is that so?" Blaze smirks.

The shade of yellow fills the scene. A yellow lightning bolt shoots out of the wand and pierces through the principal of Akansa High.
