Chapter 173: Jealousy of a mother.
One very successful date later, Mei Mei and Jingzhe returned home, holding hands and full of smiles. They walked past Mei Mei’s relatives who had knowing smiles on their faces and went up to the bedroom. It was only when they reached there that Mei Mei discovered that she had followed Jingzhe to his bedroom.
Some changes had been made, like the addition of a sofa, a reading table in the corner and a computer. A mini shelf had been hung on the wall, and it was filled with books already.
By one of the windows was an old dream catcher that was shaped like a spider’s nest. It had fluffy yellow and white feathers, Something nagged at the back of her mind, like she had seen it somewhere before but the memory was vague and not important. It was certainly not as important as Jingzhe who was stripping off his shirt.
He turned to her, reached in three strides and pulled her to sit on the chair and a kiss was planted on the back of her neck. "I want to shower but I don’t want to let you go just yet."
"I want to hide the dolls I won from Mingzhu." She answered.
He chuckled and wrapped his arms around her waist, leaning his head against her back. Mingzhu was already in bed and they both knew this. She had played so much today that she had slept off at around six thirty in the evening. She had gone to bed along with Tea, one of the kittens.
"Your dolls are very safe. Are you just trying to escape me?" he asked her.
Mei Mei’s mind had a yes sign, billboard sized and neon colored. Dates were usually good, after dates, depending on the couple, things could move in a more intimate direction.
"Go and take a shower, I need one too." She answered.
It would be her third bath of the day, having showered just after she finished digging the ponds which was right before she went on the surprise date.
Jingzhe’s heart was not calm at all. "I am almost tempted to request that we shower together. But, we just had our first date so I will not be too greedy." He planted another kiss on the back of her neck. It lasted longer as he sucked on the part he had just kissed.
Mei Mei trembled and drew in a short quick breath.
Jingzhe closed his eyes, his hands trailed upwards a little, squeezing her stomach. He took a long breath, exhaling desperately, before dropping his hands.
He could not control his heart or his desires for much longer. He pushed her away and escaped into the bathroom. A few seconds later, Mei Mei had the sound of water coming from the bathroom.
Mei Mei rushed out of his bedroom and to hers. She found the toys that she had won and those he had won waiting outside her door. She opened the door and shoved them inside with her foot.
Then, she closed the door and leaned against it, waiting for her heart to cool down. Jingzhe seemed to have awakened desires in her that she had long thought dead.
She took a few more deep breaths, opened her door and picked out the rabbit plushie. Mei Mei went to Mingzhu’s bedroom to check on her daughter. As she was going in, her aunt Su Manchu was coming out with Tea, the kitten in her hands. The kitten was dozing, its small eyes were partially closed.
"I was worried that she would roll over and squish the kitten. In case it is startled, it could scratch her." Su Manchu explained in a whisper.
Mei Mei smiled appreciatively. "Thank you aunt."
"How was your date?" she whispered a question.
"Amazing." Mei Mei smiled and answered a little louder than she expected.
"Shhh.." Su Manchu gestured for Mei Mei to lower her voice so as not to startle the kitten or wake up Mingzhu. "I am so happy for you. I want to hear all about it tomorrow my dear, and don’t skimp on the details like you used to do in the past. Also, I am sleeping over tonight. What do you want for breakfast tomorrow? Do you still love those oatmeal purple sweet potato pancakes I used to make you on Sunday mornings?"
Mei Mei nodded.
Su Manchu was about to leave when she recalled something, so she paused to say it. "Oh, I also told madam Feng that you like purple sweet potatoes and she said that she will bake a purple sweet potato baked cheesecake tomorrow. I am afraid that you are not going to get rid of the crowd in your house any time soon."
"I knew it. You all came for the cheesecake." Mei Mei chortled.
Manchu wished her goodnight and left. Mei Mei went into the bedroom.

Downstairs, when Su Manchu went into the kitchen to see if all the ingredients for tomorrow’s breakfast were available, she was stunned out of her mind to find Chi Lian in the kitchen, stocking purple sweet potatoes, Mei Mei’s favorite brand of oatmeal and yogurt.
"Chi Chi!" Manchu touched her chest, a little surprised to meet her sister-in-law in the house. "What are you doing here?"
Chi Lian slapped one of the sweet potatoes and it was flattened. She was unhappy it seemed. "This is my daughter’s house. I came because I wanted to give my son-in-law the recipe for your purple pancakes. I guess I should not have wasted your time since you are already here."
From her tone, it seemed like Chi Chi was angry with her. Manchu knew why and over the years, they had both pretended that the words Mei Mei had said back them did not mean anything.
"I can leave..." Manchu said hesitantly.
Chi Lian opened the fridge a little too aggressively. "Why would you leave when you already promised her that you would make the purple pancakes? I learned how to make them too but I could never make them as good as yours."
Chi Lian folded her lips to keep from blurting out that there were a lot of other things that Manchu did for Mei Mei which her daughter preferred to hers. The jealousy had eaten her up for years and it was still eating her up to date.
"I am sorry." Chi Chi said and she sighed. "It is not you Manchu, you are perfect and I love you and I am grateful that you were there for her when I couldn’t be. I just have so many regrets. I was running around saving the empire and the world sometimes and yet I failed to save someone that matters to me a lot.
I am jealous of the relationship that the two of you have. I just wish that she could talk to me, be at ease around me the way she is with you. I wish I could reverse time and go back to when she was a child and do things over."
Manchu hugged Chi Lian. "You saved millions, billions of people. Chi Chi you are a hero, so many children are living full happy lives because of the sacrifices you made. Just sit down with Mei Mei, explain to her why you were away a lot. Why you didn’t show up in time when she needed you sometimes.
I guarantee that she will understand. Now that she has made her own mistakes with her daughter, she is more open minded. She needs you Chi Chi, your daughter needs you. I am just a substitute, always have been. You are her real mother."
