Madam, Please Behave-Chapter 294: Farce
Gu Xiyu, who was four years older than Zhou Shiyan, didn’t have much talent academically. She dropped out before finishing high school and came to this big city to work.
She felt lucky to have met someone as kind as Lan Yixian for a boss. Her boss's daughter was also incredibly pretty.
Even though she looked tiny—like a grade schooler, really—she was a kind person. Just like Lan Yixian, she was polite to both people and situations.
Gu Xiyu liked Zhou Shiyan a lot, especially the way she called her “Big Sis”—it was just too adorable.
Sensing that Zhou Shiyan didn’t really want to answer her earlier teasing question, Gu Xiyu didn’t push her luck and chose to lie down to rest.
Once Gu Xiyu lay down, Zhou Shiyan softened her movements too. She tried to make as little noise as possible. She filled the washbasin with some cool water and added some hot water from the tea kettle, stirred it evenly, and started getting ready to wash her face.
“Ahhh!!”
A shriek rang out, instantly grabbing the attention of all three people in the room. Gu Xiyu, who had just lain down, sat right up.
All three turned their eyes toward the door.
After a moment of silence, aside from that one sudden scream, there was nothing else. The three of them waited, and then Lan Yixian broke the silence.
“I’ll go take a look…”
She got up from the bed and walked toward the door. After opening it, she stepped out into the hallway and leaned over the railing to look downstairs.
Nothing was in sight. But that scream hadn’t just caught Lan Yixian’s attention—neighbors from the surrounding apartments were opening their doors too.
Things got a little noisy.
Not seeing anything, most people assumed some lunatic had just howled randomly. After a few words of gossip, they all went back into their homes. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Lan Yixian was no exception. After glancing around a bit more, she returned inside.
And just like that, the run-down apartment building fell quiet again.
As for that scream… no one paid it any more attention.
Liu Zhiyue, panting heavily, dropped the brick in his hand.
It hit the ground with a loud clang, then fell silent.
After a moment, Liu Zhiyue looked at the man lying on the ground in front of him—the one who, even after running some distance, had still been taken down by a blow from the brick.
The man was now slumped on the ground, seemingly unconscious.
Zhiyue’s breathing gradually slowed down.
After standing still and thinking for a moment, he stepped forward and approached the man lying on the ground. He nudged the man’s calf with his foot.
The guy really had passed out. He didn’t react even after being jostled twice.
Only then did Liu Zhiyue fully let down his guard.
The person who had attacked him with an iron rod months ago was someone he hadn’t been able to forget. That incident was the reason he insisted on walking Zhou Shiyan home every day.
The guy who swung first without a word…
Wasn’t that this man right here?
That’s what Liu Zhiyue was thinking.
He didn’t know that the real attacker had already been handed over to the police station by his father, Liu Changqing. Always worried about the incident, when he caught sight of that flickering figure near the bike shelter just now…
He had pretended not to notice, went to find a suitable weapon, and then circled back the same way.
Turned out, his instincts were right.
This guy lurking in the shadows like he was plotting something… put together with that memory of the iron rod attacker…
The more he thought about it, the more Liu Zhiyue was convinced—this was the guy who had assaulted him back then.
His dad’s teachings flashed through his mind, along with the old saying: “Strike first to gain the upper hand.” Remembering that, he had crept up quietly and smashed the guy with the brick in his hand.
With a scream, the mysterious man had taken off running.
But clearly, the guy wasn’t someone who exercised much. Liu Zhiyue caught up quickly and nailed him with another brick, taking him down.
And that brought things to this very moment.
Once his heartbeat calmed back to a normal rhythm, Zhiyue took a breath and pulled out his candy bar phone from his bag.
It was a phone his father had given him.
Liu Changqing had bought the latest model, the kind with a stylus, and passed the old phone to his son.
Just as Liu Zhiyue was about to call the police, he noticed that the man who had just been lying motionless suddenly sprang to life—hands and feet moving like crazy—as he bolted away at lightning speed.
“Don’t run!”
Zhiyue shouted while holding his phone. As soon as he stepped forward, he nearly tripped on the brick he’d thrown earlier.
Thankfully, he steadied himself just in time and didn’t fall.
But the mysterious man had already gotten away.
Zhiyue chased a few steps, but when he saw he couldn’t catch up, he stopped and watched the direction the man had fled.
Regret crept into his heart.
He should’ve smacked him with another brick while checking if he was really out cold!
“Sigh…”
He let out a long sigh, frustrated with his own carelessness. Seeing that the guy had vanished, Liu Zhiyue turned back.
Just as he was about to head off, he noticed something at the spot where the man had fallen—a shiny object that looked like jade.
He paused, surprised.
Liu Zhiyue leaned in and held up his phone, using the screen’s glow as a flashlight. He finally got a good look at what it was.
Sure enough, it was a piece of jade strung on a red thread.
This… was evidence!
With that thought, Liu Zhiyue picked up the jade and stuffed it into his pocket. Then he turned around to grab his backpack, ready to head home and talk to his dad.
Back at Liu Changqing’s home.
He was blow-drying his daughter Liu Xiazhi’s hair, but glanced up at the clock on the wall. Looking at Liu Xiazhi, who was still playing with her handheld console even while getting her hair dried, he said:
“Why’s your brother so late today… he’s usually home by now.”
“Big Brother definitely went out to eat something yummy!”
Hearing her dad’s question, Liu Xiazhi seemed to remember something and turned to reply.
“I heard Big Brother say there are lots of food stalls near his school—fried skewers and stuff!”
“Doesn’t sound like him… your brother’s not the type to be greedy about food.”
“Hmph! But you left him the chicken drumstick last time!”
“That’s different! Didn’t you have one too? What’s wrong with saving one for your brother?”
The father-daughter duo kept chatting until An Yuanyao came out of the room holding a phone and walked over to Liu Changqing.
“Your phone’s been ringing. It’s Chen Dafu calling…”
“Chen Dafu?”
Liu Changqing paused and turned off the hair dryer. He took the phone from An Yuanyao, looking surprised.
Then he handed her the dryer and said:
“You take over… I’ll get this.”
“Okay.”
An Yuanyao took over the job.
Noticing that it was now her mom blow-drying her hair, Liu Xiazhi, like she was tattling, shouted loudly:
“Big Brother’s not home yet. I bet he’s eating fried skewers!”
Liu Changqing didn’t hear her. Holding the phone, he walked over to the window and answered the call, which had been ringing nonstop.
Before he could even speak, a weak voice came through from the other end.
“Help me…”
