Chapter 8: The torrential rain approaches

Back at home, Annan placed the little dog gently on the floor and retrieved a dog bed from her space.

The puppy, seeing its owner conjure the bed from thin air, stared wide-eyed, cautiously sniffing it with its nose.

Annan couldn't help but smile at the round little face, which expressed a human-like look of surprise.

"Silly dog, this is your bed. It's not poisoned."

The little white puppy seemed to understand her words, letting out a small whine before wiggling its little bottom and crawling into the bed.

Wow, this dog is quite clever!

What should she name it?

Annan looked at it nestled in the bed, plump and lazy in its resting pose.

How about "Fugui"?

It sounds like wealth and longevity.

"Fugui~" Annan took out some dog food and fed it to the little white pup. "From now on, your name is Fugui."

The little dog let out a pig-like grunt, wagged its tail, and eagerly devoured the food.

After feeding the dog, Annan changed into her comfortable home clothes and went into the kitchen to prepare a bowl of sour soup noodles.

As she ate, she scrolled through her social media feed.

Everyone was commenting on the rain that had fallen today, which had provided a respite for workers struggling through the summer heat.

Some had shared screenshots of the temperature—after a month of 38°C heat, it had suddenly dropped to 28°C.

Others mentioned that the rain was too light and wished it could last longer, even turn into a heavier downpour.

Annan looked at this post and thought to herself, Brother, you've hit the nail on the head.

The rain would indeed last a long time, but by then, that person would probably find it far less amusing.

After finishing her meal, Annan stretched her body and practiced a set of punches before heading to her room to sleep.

Little Fugui, who had been lying in the living room, immediately got up and followed her inside.

Annan smiled and petted its head. "You're quite clingy."

She found a small bed for the dog in her space and placed it beside her own bed.

Then, she turned off the lights. "Sleep now."

Perhaps because of the approaching end of the world, Annan slept restlessly that night.

In her dreams, it felt as if she had returned to her past life, with Wei Wenbin and Qian Ying'er chasing her with bone knives.

She ran frantically, only to be stopped by a dark figure blocking her path.

Looking up, she saw An Xingye, his face twisted into a sinister smile. "Good daughter, go ahead!" With a hard shove, he pushed her toward Wei Wenbin.

"No!" Annan screamed as she shot up from her bed in terror.

It was already dawn. Fugui, who had somehow climbed into her bed, was licking her palm, as though trying to comfort her.

Annan's heart warmed, and she embraced the little dog.

All the pain and betrayal of her past life had come to an end. In this life, they would be fine.

She opened the curtains, and outside, the light rain continued. Annan mixed the dog food for Fugui before heading into the kitchen to prepare a meal.

While there was still water and electricity, Annan decided to prepare as much food as she could, storing it in her space for later use.

She quickly took care of breakfast and then began pulling out all the pots in her kitchen.

Both stoves were in use, the electric stewing pot was plugged in, and the oven and air fryer were working as well.

Annan worked in a frenzy, and within no time, six large dishes were prepared.

Each dish was substantial, divided into small portions, and placed into the disposable meal containers she had bought earlier, which she then stored in her space while still hot.

She continued this routine, working tirelessly until it was past eleven, when suddenly the sky darkened.

It had been raining lightly all morning, but now the sky turned dark in the middle of the day, as if an ominous shadow had settled over the city. The rain stopped abruptly.

It's here.

Annan looked out at the darkened sky, recognizing it as the exact same scene from her previous life.

The sky would go pitch-black first, and in about an hour, the torrential rain would come, gradually flooding the city.

The house was now shrouded in darkness as well, and Fugui, its fur standing on end, pressed close to Annan's side, unsettled.

Annan turned on the lights, picked up Fugui, and gently comforted it. She grabbed a chew toy for the puppy and picked up her phone.

Weibo and her social media feeds were already ablaze with activity.

"My God, how did it suddenly turn dark in the middle of the day?"

"This is the first time I've seen something like this. I thought it was an alien invasion."

"Is it going to rain heavily? The clouds are so dark and low."

Her phone chimed with a message from the meteorological bureau—an orange alert for heavy rain, advising citizens to stay indoors and suspend outdoor activities and operations.

Annan put her phone down, quickly gathered her kitchen waste, and headed outside to dispose of it in the trash bin.

After throwing out the garbage, she returned home and entered the elevator just as someone shouted:

"Wait! Don't close the door."

It was the young man from the 15th floor with his mother.

The woman, carrying bags of vegetables and seeds, scolded her son as they stepped into the elevator:

"You little troublemaker! Why do you always cause me trouble! I'd rather have given birth to a piece of char siu!"

"Mom, you're always idle, so why not plant some things and nurture your spirit?"

"Ugh! You little brat, you just want to trap me at home as a maid so you can tinker with your junk!"

"Don't say it like that, mom. This is logistics work, contributing to the great cause of scientific research!"

"Zhao Ping'an, stop talking nonsense!"

Seeing his mother's foul-mouthed rant, Zhao Ping'an awkwardly turned to Annan, apologizing: "Sorry, miss. My mom has a bit of a temper, she talks like this sometimes."

Annan smiled politely, indicating that it was no trouble.

The elevator soon reached the 14th floor.

As Annan stepped out, she could still hear Zhao Ping'an trying to calm his mother down.

"Look, it's broad daylight, and the sky turns dark just like that. My article might actually come true; you just wait..."

The 15th floor was the top floor, where only their family lived in two apartments.

Annan had a strong impression of them. In her previous life, they were the only ones in the neighborhood who fared relatively well.

Not only were they not emaciated from hunger, but they also weren't robbed by looters. Towards the end of the extreme heat, they managed to leave the neighborhood safely, though no one knew where they had gone.

Annan returned home and opened her computer, curious to search for Zhao Ping'an's name, and sure enough, an article appeared.

"On the Twenty Possible Scenarios of the Apocalypse," by Zhao Ping'an.

The article explored various potential apocalyptic scenarios, including extreme weather, pandemics, and even methods for surviving a zombie siege.

What an imaginative mind.

The comments beneath were filled with people both criticizing his obsession with doomsday and enthusiastically discussing survival tools.

So, he was a doomsday survival enthusiast.

No wonder his family had managed so well in her past life—they were quite well-prepared!

...

In Wide City, at the Huai Shu Restaurant.

Wei Wenbin had reserved a window seat on the second floor, waiting smugly for Annan's arrival.

Blocked me? No problem—after this meal, she'll be adding me back.

He rubbed the bottle of pills in his pocket—he planned to slip them into her drink.

Once he had her, there would be no turning back...

Suddenly, a thick purple lightning bolt streaked across the quiet sky, followed by a deafening clap of thunder.

A fierce gust of wind swept through, causing the trees outside to rattle. Then, a torrential downpour began, the raindrops hammering the windows.

It was as if the heavens had torn open, with the rain pounding the ground, creating a mist of water vapor.

Wei Wenbin jumped, startled: This...
