Chapter 43 - Newcomers at the academy.

Gavin and Erza left the Alpha dorm that morning. Helena and Jackson walked behind them as they all headed to their first period classes. The school and students were buzzing with excitement as rumors of students from Daedalus academy already arriving the night before circulated throughout the campus.

Gavin was excited as he chatted away with Erza and Jackson. The tournament started the next day. Gavin had learned a vast amount of magical knowledge over the last month thanks to Veronica's help and spending every moment in the library. He felt he was ready to do exceptionally well in the upcoming tournament.

A commotion involving a group of students ahead caught Gavin's attention as they approached. A group of a dozen or so students surrounded two in the middle. Gavin's hearing was able to pick up the conversation.

"You guys think you are tough stuff, don't you?" An aggressive female voice carried over the others. "I bet the so-called attackers were just some weak normal humans, and you weren't even in any danger," the voice called out.

That last comment set Gavin's anger off as he strode through the crowd of students. Erza, Helena and Jackson followed. Gavin finally pushed past and saw a tall girl with jet-black hair cropped short to past her shoulders. She had piercing sky-blue-colored eyes, and she glanced at the newcomers.

"Oh what's this? More weaklings posturing to look tough," she called out dismissively, hands on her hips. She glared at the newcomers. The poor student she had been tormenting was on the ground with tears in her eyes as they arrived.

Gavin strode forward, ignoring her digs and helped the student, a young thin girl with light, strawberry blonde hair, off the ground. Erza stepped forward and wrapped an arm comfortingly around the young girl's shoulders as she sobbed. "I lost my best friend during that attack you heartless woman," the thin girl snarled in rage and grief as she glanced over Erza's shoulder at the brunette.

Gavin sucked in his breath sharply at the comments she screamed out. The woman had the audacity to laugh at the young girls' cries of pain and anguish.

"Maybe they shouldn't have been so weak," the brunette mocked. She belittled the upset girl in Erza's arms. Erza gritted her teeth as she felt the girl trembling against her hold. She looked up to see Gavin's eyes were bright red. His own fury ignited over the girl being bullied.

Gavin locked gazes at Erza and noticed her eyes were glowing bright yellow as she glared at the brunette. Before he could say anything, she gently handed her off to Gavin and strode confidently forward until she stood in front of the bully.

"I don't know who think you are, but this crap doesn't fly here. You need to leave, and get walking. Now!" Erza said. Her voice dropped into a cat-like growl at the end. If there was one person who liked a bully even less than Gavin did, it was Erza.

The woman raised an eyebrow at Erza, mocking her aggression. "All I did was speak the truth kitty cat. It's not my fault she can't handle it." She said this and leaned forward, entering Erza's personal space.

Gavin cocked his head as the woman copped an attitude towards his mate. He was usually the brash and aggressive one. It felt strange to have her acting the opposite. Something about the way she was attacking the thin girl really seemed to get to Erza.

Erza narrowed her eyes, and suddenly fire engulfed her arms. "I suggest you move along, before you get hurt," she said in a final warning. This attack was unprovoked and unnecessary. How dare this random girl, who obviously wasn't part of their academy, judging by the military uniform she wore, verbally insult, mock and belittle someone that survived and lost someone? That was beyond acceptable.

The brunette grinned, her pearl-white teeth shining in the morning light. It seemed, at least, some of the students had a backbone at this academy, she thought. Be that as it may, she was never going to just back down from a challenge. She was here to prove a point, and it was going to be made.

Quick as lightning, the brunette ducked low and threw out a massive right hand aimed for Erza's stomach. The crowd gasped in shock and alarm as Erza, having the reflexes of a werecat, grabbed the fist before it made impact.

"So it's a fight you want?" Erza snarled out. She engulfed her hand in fire magic as the other pulled back quickly. Erza threw out several large fireballs towards her opponent that easily ducked, dipped and dodged her way away from them.

By now, the crowd of onlookers grew even more. A thick circle of students stood watching the confrontation. Gavin was on edge, wanting to protect his mate. But he knew she had the skills and strength to take care of this easily enough.

The brunette laughed as she lunged forward, closing the distance. Her hands were covered in a hard, stone-like material as she threw a series of rapid punches towards Erza.

Erza threw up a wall of fire, blocking the impacts as she jumped back out of range. So, she's a close-range fighter, huh, Erza thought. As she jumped back, she concentrated on her mana and formed two long daggers made from fire magic in her hands. The last month of classes and training had already helped her improve her skills by leaps and bounds. She jumped around the wall of fire and charged at the woman.

The brunette grinned maniacally as she countered Erza's daggers with her fists made from stone. Each impact sent a deep vibration through Erza's arms as they connected. Erza gritted her teeth and forced herself to move faster. She changed up her series of blows and randomly threw in a few kicks, hoping for something to make contact with the brunette.

Erza was rewarded with a loud grunt as her right foot connected to the woman's stomach, and she was sent tumbling backwards.

"Had enough?" Erza growled, panting from the physical and mana exertion. She was standing back, watching her opponent carefully.

"Always got to cause us problems, don't you, Kayla?" a male voice called out from behind the brunette on the ground.

Erza tried looking to see who had spoken when, suddenly, there was a younger man with similar jet-black hair crouched low before her, his fist swung back in preparation for a mighty blow.

Erza cursed and readied herself to brace for an impact that never arrived. Quicker than anyone could see, Gavin ran forward and used the second stage of magic to summon a mighty earthen hand-held shield that absorbed the impact of the man's fist. The impact sent shockwaves through the crowd and shattered the stone shield in Gavin's hands.

"Two on one is hardly fair. I don't think I can stand by for that. Especially when it's against my mate," Gavin said softly, his eyes brightly glowing red.

The man scoffed as he stood up. He didn't expect someone to be so quick to block his strike, let alone so easily. "Mates are a waste of time and a weakness," the man responded dismissively.

Gavin laughed, mocking his comment. "There you would be wrong. She's my greatest source of strength. Now if you want to dance, shut up and let's dance," Gavin said, his wolf canines flashing in the sunlight as he narrowed his eyes dangerously on the newcomers. "I hope your will and testament is up-to-date," Gavin said darkly as he locked eyes on the man.
