Chapter 263: Interesting Times

Violet had just heard Uva speak when her eyes instantly fluttered open, shocked to look in front of her and see that indeed Uva was right. Cain’s beast, with eyes that had blazed with animosity, suddenly looked much warmer as it leaned its nose into her with a harder nudge than usual—but less threatening than before.

Violet ignored the stench of blood that clung to it and the way the red color smudged on her clothes as she leaned into it with a hug and a huge smile on her face, visibly relieved that she wouldn’t be dying any longer.

Henry also stepped forward, but Uva simply continued to stand by the stairs with an extremely wary look in her eyes. Refusing to take one step forward, she spoke with a sense of urgency that only she seemed to feel.

"You should give him the vial now!" she told Violet, who finally remembered the plan as she instantly nodded her head, popping open the cover of the vial with her mouth and about to pour it over Cain’s tongue.

But she had just been a moment away from doing so when Uva suddenly gasped, taking a step forward with her hands stretched out and an even more urgent expression on her face.

"STOP! Pour a drop!" Uva said, a wary look in her eyes that didn’t surprise Violet, considering the way Uva had acted with the witch they had seen.

"...We gave her what she wanted. She has no reason to—" but Violet was still talking when Uva interrupted without allowing her to finish.

"She’s a witch!" Uva responded, almost as if that was more than enough reason to do anything she wanted.

"A DROP!" Uva insisted, and as much as Violet wanted to argue that the witch had specifically mentioned the whole dose, she didn’t. Instead, she whispered to Cain before putting a drop of the black potion on his tongue and pulling away.

She was ready to pour the rest at a moment’s notice, even as she waited to see visible changes.

Seconds became minutes as they all stood around and watched, including the loyal guards who remained, waiting with intense hope in their eyes for the transformation of their lord. As vicious as Cain was, he was their lord, and that was more than enough reason for them to respect and obey him.

"Nothing is happening!" Violet finally said after a few more minutes of waiting, having grown too impatient to continue.

"We should wait at least an hour!" Uva insisted, but this time, the frustration and fear that had built up in Violet’s chest finally reached the breaking point. Scared beyond words that the potion was fake and wouldn’t work, she prepared to pour the rest down his throat just to find out.

"WE DON’T HAVE AN HOUR!" Violet snapped at her, regretting it only after the words were out of her mouth.

For a moment, complete silence and stillness filled the space between them. The bodies on the ground were ignored, as if they were nothing but tile decorations.

"He’s okay now, but what if—" Violet began to say in a much softer tone than before, which made Uva also reduce the tone with which she spoke. She even took a couple of steps forward while speaking with a serious look on her face.

"I know witches, Violet! You think this is bad, but whatever she could have put in that potion could be much worse!"

"The things we are capable of doing and experimenting with, just for the sake of results, are something you can’t even begin to conceive!" A severe look on her face showed that not only did she believe the words she said, but she was also haunted by the memories she could imagine at that moment.

"We should at least wait for fifteen minutes before each drop! If it’s poisoned, then it should be something I can reverse as long as the dosage isn’t too much!" Uva explained as she held Violet’s gaze.

Satisfied to see her nod after a few moments of staring at each other in silence, Violet finally spoke with a trace of understanding in her eyes.

"Okay! But the second something changes and it doesn’t look good...I’m feeding him the entire thing!" Violet responded, moving closer to rub his fur. Her gaze no longer registered the blood as something to dash away from as she simply smiled, while Cain’s beast continued to nudge closer to her in a way that wouldn’t hurt her.

Uva continued to stand far by the stairs, her forehead creased with anxiety as she stared deeply at Cain’s beast, mumbling something under her breath in a way that made her eyes shine a bit more brightly than before.

She stared intensely, trying to see deeper into Cain’s body, but she had only just begun to look when she gave up the next second with a loud gasp. Her hands raised to her eyes to wipe away the tear of blood that dripped out, even as she tried hard to process what she had just seen. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Deep in Cain’s body was all the normal workings she had seen in a werewolf. His organs were good, and everything seemed to be fine—except for his veins. Werewolf blood had a different aura from that of Reds, which was why it had been so shocking to see his veins filled with nothing but the blood of a Red. Something that should clearly be impossible.

Worse, it was the black drop that Cain had swallowed, which she had tried to see deeply into, only to be unable to. She was forced to look away before she was blinded by the strong magic it seemed to contain.

Clearly, something was very wrong—and worse, it was way above the level she could understand!

Violet was distracted, but Henry wasn’t. He saw Uva suddenly gasp and flinch in pain as she lowered her head to the ground, wiping her face with her hands, which came out smudged with blood.

"Are you okay?" Henry asked her with a slight note of concern in his voice. She was a witch—someone that should be killed on sight. The only reason he hadn’t done so was because she seemed intent on healing his lord. So, unless his lord gave the order, Henry saw no reason to kill a young woman who not only looked harmless but had also put her life on the line just to help.

"I’m—I’m fine!" Uva quickly stuttered in response, doing her best to bury the alarm she felt, even as she maintained an aura of calm.

The analyze spell was usually used for potions, and something all witches could do as long as it was fueled by their blood magic. Only now did she realize that not only had she used all of her stored blood magic, but she had also overstretched the limit of her body simply from one gaze.

A wry smile flashed across her face as she continued to speak.

"...I’ve seen better days, but this takes the cake! If I knew my life would be this interesting, I would have simply gone to hide in the countries in the south, filled mostly with humans!"

"Really? I thought most witches frowned heavily against such things?" Henry responded with a genuinely curious look on his face, taken aback to see Uva raise her gaze and reveal reddened brown eyes that made it appear as though she had been heavily crying and had only just stopped.

"Yes! We’re witches—we experiment and make wondrous things. Like my teacher once said, if you’re not learning and constantly experiencing new things, then you’re better off dead!" Uva said, gritting her teeth as she turned her gaze back to the beast in front of her, standing right beside Violet.

What she failed to mention was the fact that most times, boring keeps you alive!
