Chapter 279: Friendly Warning

Cain had just stepped into the huge office when his gaze focused on Eldric, who sat in his seat with a wine glass in his hands, filled to the brim.

Eldric wore a severe expression on his face, his gaze completely focused on the glass in his hand, not even sparing a glance at Cain, who had just walked in with Henry behind him.

Cain also didn’t seem all that bothered by it as he simply walked forward toward the huge mahogany table Eldric sat behind, taking the opposite chair.

Garrick stood a few steps behind Eldric, his muscles tense, and he wasn’t the only one. The room was filled with other hidden guards, numbering more than a dozen, as they hid in varying parts of the room, ready to appear the moment the need arose.

Eldric sipped slowly on his glass, even as Cain sat down on the chair and crossed his legs with a blank expression on his face. freewebnøvel.coɱ

Neither of them spoke, even as the silence between them grew louder with each passing second.

Henry, who stood behind Cain, and Garrick, who stood behind Eldric, didn’t dare to make a sound, especially when their lords hadn’t even bothered to open their mouths.

Eldric took another long sip from his glass and had just glanced at the bottle with the intent to refill it when he heard Cain finally open his mouth to speak.

"I’m sure you’ve heard about Ravon!" he began, a flash of anger in his eyes, which he appeared to struggle to hide as he continued to speak through gritted teeth.

"I tortured him, and right now, he’s being rehabilitated!" Cain continued, speaking frankly without holding back any part of what he had to say.

"...and why should I care!" Eldric responded in a tone that could freeze ice as he poured himself another drink, refilling his almost empty glass.

He raised his head to fix his gaze on Cain, who hadn’t once looked away from Eldric since he entered the large office.

"He’s your subordinate, and you can do whatever you—" but he was still speaking when Cain suddenly interrupted him before he could finish.

The interruption ignited fury inside Eldric, though a hint of a smile lingered on his lips as it became obvious that Cain was too angry to continue pretending to be obedient toward him.

It had been a while since Eldric had discovered that not only was the red potion no longer adversely affecting Cain, but it somehow made him significantly stronger than all other werewolves by a wide margin.

It was only a matter of time before he openly rebelled, Eldric thought to himself as he heard Cain speak in a cold but grave tone.

"You ordered him to poison me...like the potion you were already giving me wasn’t enough!"

But Eldric looked just as furious, even though inwardly he didn’t actually feel that way.

"Lies!!! You come here and accuse me of things you have no evidence of!"

"After all I’ve done for you!! This is what I get in return!!" Eldric loudly snapped, his tone making it seem as though he was about to jump to his feet and rage at Cain, his fists balled together in anger as he continued to speak.

"If that is all you came for, then you might as well—" but instead of simply interrupting him like before, Cain spoke over him as Eldric continued.

"...not have bothered to come here! I’m busy! I have better things to do than to spend my time with you!"

"I just came to personally warn you! For old times’ sake!!" Cain said slowly and calmly, though his red and gold eyes were anything but calm. They held a scary and mysterious feeling, one that even Eldric couldn’t deny as he listened.

"If you ever step out of line again...I’ll make it my life’s calling to erect your head on a spike!"

"What? Is that a threat? Are you aware that it is against the rules to—"

"Call it a friendly warning!" Cain responded as he got to his feet, while Eldric continued to snap at him in anger, a look of utter disgust in his eyes.

"I am your father’s brother! If you had any feelings toward your dead parents, then you would know better than to—" but he wasn’t done speaking when Cain suddenly jerked up his hands and leaned forward, bringing both fists down on the table between him and Eldric.

His hands had just landed squarely on the table when the wood instantly crumbled into large and small splinters that flew everywhere.

Garrick instantly stepped out from behind Eldric, along with a couple of others, seeing Cain as a potential threat, only to step back just as quickly when Eldric raised his hand to signal that everything was fine.

Cain, on the other hand, didn’t look fine. Both his eyes flickered red before one of them turned back to their original gold color, his gaze focused coldly on Eldric as he spoke, showing that he would like nothing more than to rip him apart.

"...if you mention my parents ever again, then I swear that you’ll lose more than a finger!" Cain told him, alluding to the wounds he had previously left on Eldric’s body when his wolf had gone out of control and attacked him.

Not seeing a reason to continue standing there, Cain turned around to leave, heading toward the door.

Henry was already moving to open it, serving his master without once looking toward Eldric or Garrick as he walked out behind Cain.

They ignored the guards who stood outside, their expressions almost as if they were nothing but cockroaches Cain couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to.

They walked quickly, heading out of the mansion through the pathways they had taken. Even if Henry was unfamiliar with the route, Cain wasn’t, and it wasn’t long before they exited the mansion.

Cain jumped into their car, which Eldric’s men had known better than to leave behind, with Henry following suit.

But Cain had just settled in the backseat, with Henry—whose heart had been beating erratically in his chest since they arrived at the district, especially after Cain had chosen to bring only him to the mansion—when he opened his mouth to speak.

"Ravon! All is good?" Cain asked with a slight look of annoyance on his face as he leaned against the door by his side, satisfied to hear the response he wanted from Henry’s lips as he started the car.

"Yes, My Lord! Ravon is definitely on our side!" Henry responded, even as he hurriedly turned the car around and headed toward the main gates of the mansion to leave through them.
