Chapter 57

Astrid’s POV

Kaeleen led me through the pack grounds. The setting sun painted the sky in hues of orange and purple, but I barely noticed. My stomach was churning with anxiety.

"Where exactly are we going?" I finally asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

Kaeleen glanced at me, his expression softening. "We’re going to the Shrine," he said. "It’s where we’ll perform the mating Ritual."

"Oh." I said as the realization dawned on me.

As we walked further, the trees grew denser, the air cooler. An almost palpable sense of ancient power seemed to emanate from the earth. Finally, we reached a clearing. In the center stood a structure unlike anything I’d ever seen. It wasn’t a building, exactly, but more of an open-air sanctuary. Stone pillars, carved with intricate designs of wolves, moons, and stars, supported a roof of woven branches and vines. The air was thick with the scent of herbs and wildflowers.

"This is it," Kaeleen said.

"How old is this shrine?" I asked him.

"It’s been in the pack for years. We’ve renovated but decided to keep it’s old charm." He said to me.

"It’s beautiful." I told him.

Just then, a woman emerged from the shadows, her presence immediately commanding respect. She was tall and slender, with long, silver hair that cascaded down her back. Her eyes were a deep, knowing blue, and her face was etched with the wisdom of ages. She wore a flowing robe of white, adorned with symbols that seemed to glow in the fading light.

"This is Priestess Elara," Kaeleen said, bowing his head slightly. "She is the Keeper of the Shrine and will guide us through the ritual."

Priestess Elara inclined her head in acknowledgement, her gaze piercing yet gentle. "Welcome, Astrid," she said, her voice melodic and soothing. "I have been expecting you."

I turned to Kaeleen with a raised eyebrow. "Thought you were surprised when I said we should do it now."

"Yeah but we also had preparations in place also." He told me.

I had met this woman during the welcome party but she seemed kind.

"I will explain everything. The Mating Ritual is an ancient tradition, a way to honor the Moon Goddess and to solidify the bond between two souls. It is a sacred ceremony, not to be taken lightly."

She led us to a stone altar in the center of the shrine. It was covered with a tapestry of woven moonlight, and several objects were laid out upon it: candles, herbs, crystals, and a silver chalice.

"The ritual is a journey," Elara explained. "A journey of connection, of commitment, and of surrender. You will each offer yourselves to the Moon Goddess, promising to honor the bond you share and to uphold the values of our pack."

She turned to Kaeleen. "As Alpha, you have a responsibility to lead and protect. You must swear to cherish Astrid, to respect her, and to never abuse the power you hold."

Kaeleen nodded solemnly. "I swear it," he said, his voice firm.

Elara then turned to me, her gaze intense. "Astrid, you have come to us seeking sanctuary. You must swear to embrace your new life, to contribute to the well-being of our pack, and to honor the traditions that bind us together."

I hesitated, my mind racing. Could I really do this? Could I commit myself to a life I barely understood? Could I trust Kaeleen, despite my past experiences?

Sheena, my wolf, stirred within me, but she didn’t say anything.

Taking a deep breath, I met Elara’s gaze. "I swear it," I said, my voice trembling slightly.

Elara smiled. "Then let us begin."

The ritual unfolded slowly, deliberately. Elara guided us through a series of chants, prayers, and symbolic actions. We lit candles, each flame representing a different aspect of our bond: love, trust, respect, and loyalty. We offered herbs to the Moon Goddess, symbols of gratitude and sacrifice. We drank from the silver chalice, sharing a sip of the sacred water.

As we progressed, I began to feel a shift within me. The anxiety and apprehension that had been plaguing me began to fade, replaced by a sense of calm and connection. I could feel Sheena’s presence growing stronger, her energy merging with mine.

Elara instructed us to kneel before the altar, facing each other. She took our hands, joining them together.

"Now," she said, her voice filled with power, "you must speak your vows. Speak from your hearts, and let the Moon Goddess bear witness to your commitment."

Kaeleen squeezed my hands gently. "Astrid," he said, his voice filled with emotion, "I offer you my protection, my loyalty, and my unwavering support. I promise to honor your freedom, to respect your choices, and to cherish you for all that you are. I will never force you, never control you, and never betray your trust. I will be your shield, your confidant, and your partner in all things. I swear it upon my life, and upon the honor of my wolf, Ryker."

His words resonated deeply within me, touching a part of my soul that had long been dormant. I could feel the sincerity in his voice, the genuine desire to protect and support me.

It was my turn. I took a deep breath, trying to find the words to express the complex emotions that were swirling within me.

"Kaeleen," I said, my voice trembling, "I... I don’t know what the future holds. I don’t know if I can ever fully trust again. But I want to try. I want to believe that there is hope for me, that I can find happiness and security in this new life. I offer you my honesty, my willingness to learn, and my commitment to building a bond based on respect and understanding. I swear to honor your leadership, to contribute to the well-being of our pack, and to stand by your side through whatever challenges may come. I swear it upon my life, and upon the spirit of my wolf, Sheena."

As the final words left my lips, a surge of energy coursed through me. The candles flickered wildly, the air crackled with power, and the shrine seemed to glow with an ethereal light. I could feel Sheena’s presence merging completely with mine, our souls intertwined.

The ritual was complete.

Elara smiled, her eyes radiating warmth. "The Moon Goddess has heard your vows," she said. "The bond is sealed."

We turned to leave when Elara called out to me.

"What?" I asked her.

"Welcome to the pack, Luna." She said to me with a kind smile which I returned.

We emerged from the shrine, to find that the clearing was now filled with pack members. Word had spread, and they had gathered to witness the completion of the ritual.

I braced myself for judgment, for criticism, for the inevitable whispers and stares. But what I found was something entirely different.

The pack members were smiling, their faces filled with joy and acceptance. They cheered, they applauded, they offered words of congratulations and support.

"Welcome, Luna Astrid!" someone shouted.

"It’s about time Kaeleen found someone worthy!" another added.

I was stunned. I had expected hostility, but instead, I was met with open arms.

"I... I don’t know what to say," I stammered, my cheeks flushing with heat. "I’m sorry if the ritual was this quiet."

A woman stepped forward, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "Don’t worry about that, Luna," she said. "We’re just glad to see Kaeleen finally settle down. And if he ever gives you any trouble, you just let us know. We’ll set him straight."

The crowd erupted in laughter and I chuckled along. I turned and noticed that Kaeleen was watching me intensely with a frown. He had been behaving weird since we had the conversation in my room.

"What?" I asked him.

He shook his head. "Nothing. Nothing at all." But his gaze was still on me.
