Chapter 19 - 19: Keep An Eye On Kate

After confirming everything was normal, he sighed in relief.

"Rai's fine. Why are you so worried?" Philip asked Daniel, confused.

He followed Daniel into his study as they talked.

"Tell me, if a child is afraid of a storm, would you, as a parent, lock them in an attic with no one to stay with them?"

"A biological parent?"

"Sort of." Kate was Rai's biological aunt.

"That's some strange behavior from the parents. They should be admitted to the neurosurgical department. That's an illness not everyone can treat."

"..."

Daniel seemed to freeze.

None of it felt right.

Philip went on, "Forget about whether they're the biological parent or not. A normal person with a conscience wouldn't treat a child that way. Who is this heartless person you're talking about?"

That answer missed the point. Daniel's expression grew darker with every word. "If parents don't protect their children when they need it, wouldn't the child become insecure and aloof?"

"That's inevitable, but it's okay if it only happens sometimes. In the long run, they might end up like Rai. Hmm... what happened, Daniel?"

Philip was shocked. He suddenly realized something when he saw Daniel's darkening expression. "You're talking about Kate Bently?! I told you she was up to no good with Rai. Why else would she encourage a child to jump off a building? You didn't believe me before! And guess who was in your room just now? It was her again. She got into your bed and tried to threaten me into keeping quiet!"

He had never liked Kate!

He also wondered if Kate had something to do with the old man's death because he never believed that Chantelle had caused Wesley's death.

Chantelle had always been kind!

Daniel had been unable to let go of his hatred for Chantelle over the years.

Anyone who mentioned her name would face a horrible fate!

Kate had always been by Daniel's side, making it harder for him to catch her in the act!

Had Daniel finally realized something was wrong with Kate? If so, would he soon be able to clear Chantelle's name?

Daniel's face became even more gloomy as he listened to Philip.

He clenched his fists and ordered Ashton, "Go, have someone keep an eye on Kate Bently!"

"Yes, Sir!"

Meanwhile, in Railer's bedroom

Kane opened his eyes once the movement in the room stopped.

He had almost fallen asleep.

Chantelle had given him a good idea by telling him about the attic in the Wilson home, so he hid there and pretended to be distressed.

He had wanted to visit his little brother before coming back, but his mother stopped him!

It made him feel jealous. He wasn't a monster who would hurt his brother!

He was here to teach that scumbag a lesson and do his best for his mother. But she was reading stories to his little brother in bed. He wanted that, too!

He sat up, pulled the covers over himself, looked for his mother's chat box on his phone, and sent a message.

"My dear Mom, has my beloved brother fallen asleep?"

"He's awake."

"What... What are you doing then? Is he that cute?"

"We're counting our money. Chat you later."

"..."

I see how it is. You're a mother-son pair sticking together, and I'm stuck with the scumbag. I'm the unwanted child! What a sad life!

Kane dramatically acted out his situation.

He pretended to cry, and just as he was about to send a voice message to his mother, a voice startled him.

"What are you doing, Rai?"

Before he could gather himself, the quilt was quickly thrown off him.

He quickly hid his phone under his pillow and turned to face Kate, who gave him a fake smile.

Oh, this pretty lady looks ugly with that fake grin.

Kane didn't respond. Instead, he pulled his quilt over himself and scooted back.

Based on his scared look, Kate thought Railer must have known about her involvement when he was thrown off a cliff.

Her gentle facade dropped at the thought.

"Cat got your tongue, brat? Are you mute?" Kate had closed the door behind her when she entered.

She didn't need to pretend with just the two of them inside the room anymore.

Kane usually played around a lot, but this was the first time he met such a harsh woman.

He didn't want to talk to her.

Mostly, he was afraid of revealing his secrets and being caught.

So, Kane decided to stay quiet and let Kate say what she wanted before figuring out how to respond.

"Speak. Do you think I can't do anything to you just because you're silent? Let me warn you. Keep running your mouth and spreading lies about me, and I'll throw you into the reservoir as fish food. You'll never come back!"

Kate leaned close to Kane, grabbing his fragile shoulders as she threatened him.

She didn't even realize that Daniel had started to suspect her!

Kane was startled by her angry outburst, but as a little troublemaker himself, he had seen worse.

"Sorry, Auntie Kate. I wasn't paying attention. You want to take me fishing at the reservoir!"

Kane looked at Kate with innocent eyes, purposely trying to annoy her.

"Don't test me, Railer! Be good and keep your mouth shut. I'll make sure you pay if you ruin my engagement with your father!"

Kane was good at spotting trouble. He could tell right away that she was a cruel stepmother just by the look on her face!

My brother must've been bullied every day.

Railer knows something about this woman. That's why she came here to threaten me!

Kane felt a pang of hurt when he thought about his little brother lying in the hospital bed. He blamed himself deeply. He had the privilege of his mother's love, but his little brother was left to suffer in the Wilson household.

What's there to envy?

I shouldn't envy him. What I need to do now is get revenge for him!

He noticed her angry expression and calmly agreed. "Okay, Auntie Kate. Take it easy. It's not like I won't agree."

Kate thought there was something wrong with her ears.

The brat, who had always been at odds with her, was being nice now?

"What?"

"Yeah, don't worry. I won't stop you from marrying Daddy." Kane clung to his quilt and smiled innocently.

"Really? You've become a good boy, Rai. I'll be nice if you don't say anything you're not supposed to!" She felt pleased.

The look in her eyes softened.

"Of course. Kids don't lie. But..."

"But?"

"But what will you give me when you marry Daddy?" He looked at her expectantly.
