My Antique Mirror Is A Portal To Another World-Chapter 28: Timely Help
Chapter 28: Timely Help
Feng Xiyan helped Fan Wanming and Ding Zhenshun up, and looked at their bodies covered in blood. He didn’t know whose blood was on them, but he could see the deep wounds under their torn clothes and armor.
Feng Xiyan turned to the soldiers and ordered, "Escort General Fan and General Ding to the infirmary. Let Physician Yan treat their wounds."
The soldiers clasped their fists and responded, "Yes, Great General."
With their current conditions, Fan Wanming and Ding Zhenshun knew they couldn’t fight, so they bowed once more and said, "Thank you, Great General."
Feng Xiyan nodded and let them leave. Then he turned to observe the battlefield below.
Standing at his side, Xue Ruhong said, "Great General, we have used up all our oil and arrows. If we don’t meet the enemy head-on, it will be hard to defend the city wall."
Feng Xiyan frowned and shook his head, "We can’t fight them head-on."
Just as he said that, Kai Mu shouted, "They are out of oil and arrows! Climb the wall and destroy the gate!"
On his command, the sound of war drums suddenly changed.
Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum!
In an instant, the fast, deep beat of the war drums boosted the morale of the Yuezhi Tribe’s soldiers.
Following the war drums’ sounds, hundreds of soldiers rushed forward carrying ladders and ropes, rushing for the wall.
Another group carried massive logs with sharpened ends, charging toward the city gate. Standing in front of the tightly shut gate, they rammed the logs against it, shaking the huge city gate with each impact.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The soldiers guarding the city gate formed a barricade behind the closed gate and tried their best to defend it, while the Yuezhi Tribe soldiers continued to ram the city gate.
Seeing that the morale of his soldiers diminished, Feng Xiyan’s expression tensed.
Clenching his fists, he thought, ’The city gate can’t hold on any longer. Should I send the civilians to escape first? But can they even get out of this city with all routes blocked by the Yuezhi Tribe? What should I do?’
Just as he was caught in a dilemma, a soldier rushed toward him. Clasping his hands and kneeling in front of Feng Xiyan, the soldier said breathlessly, "G–Great General! Fairy Bai—she sent weapons and armor!"
At his words, not only Feng Xiyan, but Xue Ruhong and the exhausted, injured soldiers guarding the city wall turned to him in disbelief. A second later, hope flickered in their eyes.
Grabbing the soldier by the shoulders, Feng Xiyan excitedly asked, "Is what you said true?"
The soldier nodded furiously like a chicken pecking at rice and replied, "It’s true! Great General, there are boxes of weapons in your tent right now!"
Feng Xiyan’s heart pounded with excitement when he heard this. Making plans in his mind, he turned to Xue Ruhong and ordered, "General Xue, go and bring the weapons here. I will hold the enemies back in the meantime."
Knowing they had no time to waste, Xue Ruhong replied, "Yes, Great General!"
After Xue Ruhong hurriedly left for the barracks with a team of soldiers, Feng Xiyan raised his sword and shouted, "Heaven is on our side! We will win! Defend the city!"
The nearby soldiers had heard the news, and their morale reignited. Raising their weapons high, their eyes gleamed with determination as they roared in unison, "Defend the city! Defend the city!"
With each shout, the soldiers’ morale soared.
Sensing the Feng Army’s rising morale and listening to their roars, Kai Mu tightened his grip on his warhorse’s reins and cursed, "Damn it! Why is their morale suddenly igniting?"
The general beside him pondered for a moment and asked, "Supreme General, could it be that they have received reinforcements?"
Hearing this, Kai Mu narrowed his eyes. After a moment of silence, he said coldly, "The only one who could provide reinforcements to Feng Xiyan right now is the Yu Empire. Are you saying that the Yu Empire has betrayed us?"
The general shook his head and replied, "This subordinate is not certain. However, given the Feng Army’s current situation, the only thing that could give them hope and the will to fight is reinforcements from their imperial court."
At those words, Kai Mu recalled the discussions from earlier that day.
Gritting his teeth, he sneered, "Good. Very good. What a clever move—fishing in troubled waters. If the Yu Empire dares to play me like this, then don’t blame me for being ruthless!"
Then, raising his voice, he declared, "Today, this general will have Feng Xiyan’s head and take Xiqiang City! Whoever breaks the city gate will be rewarded with thirty dan of grain and five beauties!"
Upon hearing this, the Yuezhi generals and soldiers roared in excitement and launched a frenzied attack on the city gate.
Inside the city, just behind the tightly shut gates, the Feng Army soldiers were reaching their limit.
The captain, seeing that the city gate and the six huge wooden planks had begun to crack, knew they couldn’t hold out much longer.
Bracing himself against the city gate, he shouted, "Brothers, hold the line! We must not let them break through! If they do, our families will become their prey!"
"Yes, Captain!" the soldiers responded in unison.
While they struggled to defend the city gate, the Yuezhi soldiers continued to ram it with giant logs, pouring all their strength into each blow.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Just when the city gate was almost broken, Xue Ruhong returned with Tan Pengtai and Zhan Qi, followed by a group of soldiers pushing wooden carts loaded with metal boxes.
When the captain saw them, his eyes lit up as he said, "General Xue is back! Brothers, hold on! Fairy Bai has sent us weapons! We can win this battle—just hang in there!"
Encouraged by the captain’s words, the soldiers renewed their determination to defend the gate.
Xue Ruhong, seeing how close the gate was to collapsing and how the soldiers were using their own bodies to brace it, immediately rushed up the wall to report to Feng Xiyan.
"Great General, the weapons have arrived!"
