Rays of sunlight peeked through the curtains, pulling Raelynn out of her dreams. She shifted under the blankets, a small groan escaping her as the memories of the previous day came rushing back.

The library. The almost-kiss. Elion's smirk as he held the book just out of her reach.

She rubbed her face and sighed. Why was she replaying those moments over and over? It wasn't like it meant anything. It couldn't.

"Get a grip, Raelynn," she muttered, sitting up and swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. She glanced at the clock on the bedside table. 8:45 a.m. Not too early, not too late.

She made her way to the bathroom, hoping to shake off the strange butterflies feeling in her stomach. By the time she had showered, brushed her hair, and dressed in comfortable jeans and a light sweater, she finally felt a little more like herself. Steeling her nerves, she told herself to act normal. Nothing had changed. Just be cool.

She made her way down the stairs, the quiet sounds of the house meeting her ears. A light tapping sound of a spoon hitting a cup came from the dining area. Rounding the corner, she saw Elion seated at the head of the table like usual. He wore a white shirt with the top two buttons undone, exposing just enough to make her heart do an unwelcome flip.

"Morning," she said, keeping her tone casual.

Elion looked up, his silver eyes locking onto hers. There was a gentle smile on his face, not the cheeky one she remembered from yesterday. This one was softer, more... genuine? "Good morning, Raelynn."

Feeling his eyes on her, she hurried to fix herself a cup of tea before sitting down.

"You're up early," she commented, trying to fill the silence.

He chuckled lightly. "Not really. You're just late."

Instead of answering, she took a long sip of tea, hoping it would cool the embarrassment warming her face. What kind of question was that? she thought, couldn't help but cringe to herself. Of course, Elion's up early. It's not like he's the type to sleep in or laze around and what time is it?! Geez, Raelynn, could you sound any more clueless?

Raelynn shifted slightly in her seat, keeping her eyes trained on the table. It wasn't an awkward silence, but it felt heavier to her after her awkward remark. Nope, not doing that again, she decided firmly. Better to stay quiet than risk making myself look like a fool a second time.

Elion didn't look bothered at all. He sipped his coffee like nothing happened, glancing at her for a second before looking out the window. Raelynn kept her focus elsewhere, determined to blend into the background of her own life for the next few minutes.

A moment passed before that familiar glint appeared in his gaze. "So," he began, "have you finished that sappy romance novel yet?"

Raelynn nearly choked on her tea. She set the cup down, glaring at him. "It's not sappy," she defended.

Elion leaned back in his chair, arms crossed as he studied her. "Hmm. Let me guess. Star-crossed lovers? Dramatic misunderstandings? Maybe even a love triangle?"

Raelynn rolled her eyes. "For your information, it's more complex than that."

"Of course it is."

"Why do you care, anyway?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at him.

"I don't," he replied smoothly, picking up his coffee. "I'm just curious how predictable your taste really is."

Raelynn huffed, crossing her arms. "Well, at least I don't spend my time brooding over boring paperwork."

"Fair enough," he admitted, a faint grin playing on his lips.

Despite herself, Raelynn couldn't help but smile. It was weirdly comforting to joke with him, even if it made her chest feel annoyingly warm.

The day slipped by quietly, with nothing out of the ordinary. Raelynn retreated to her room after breakfast, determined to lose herself in her book and not dwell on Elion. But the harder she tried to focus, the more her mind wandered back to the library.

She found herself thinking about the way his hand had brushed hers when he handed her the book, the heat that had flared up her arm at the brief contact. The way he looked at her, their faces so close she could feel his breath.

"Ugh," she groaned, slamming the book shut and burying her face in her hands. "What is wrong with me?"

As the sun set, Raelynn sat on her bed, legs crossed, skimming her book without much focus. She stared at the book, not really reading as her mind wandered for the umpteenth time. She was so lost in her musings that she almost didn't hear the knock at her door.

"Come in," she called, sitting up straighter.

The door creaked open, and Elion stepped inside. He looked... different. The confidence he always had was intact, but underneath it, she thought she saw hesitation, maybe even vulnerability? It made Raelynn's pulse quicken for reasons she didn't want to analyze.

"Elion?" she asked, her brow furrowing. "What's up?"

He took a step closer, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. His gaze flickered around the room before settling on her. "There's something I've been considering," he began, speaking more gently than usual.

Raelynn tilted her head, curious but also slightly wary. "About what?"

There was a pause, and for a moment, she thought he might back out of whatever he was about to say. But then he met her eyes, and the corner of his mouth quirked up in a faint smile.

"I want to take you to dinner," he said lightly, though his eyes didn't waver. "Just the two of us."

Raelynn blinked, her mind racing. Was he serious? Why was he asking her out? And why did her heart feel like it was about to leap out of her chest?

"Dinner?" she asked softly, her voice small and hesitant.

"Yes, Raelynn," Elion confirmed. "Dinner. You and me."
