Chapter 35: A Father’s Heart

(Zyair)

I had never imagined my daughter would face such a betrayal in her life. We took all kinds of precautions regarding her and the people she dated.

Andy had stuck me as a decent man. His father, Lawson, had collaborated with us; we were business partners.

I failed to understand how everything fell apart.

We had raised Arata to be a strong girl, capable of making her own decisions. But this incident broke her heart and I found myself as helpless as I did when pregnant Skyla was taken from me.

The pain that erupted in my heart, seeing her cry in my arms, flowed like a torrent of anguish, and I wished to end the man responsible then and there.

I had promised myself that no one would hurt my family and walk away. I intended to keep that promise.

And the agonising crisis that followed was that she left home. We had never been apart, and I knew one day she would get married and make her home elsewhere, still, I was not ready for it.

I had always known that most men were monsters. Skyla and I had witnessed their atrocities firsthand and no way was I prepared for my children to go through them.

That’s why we had always been extra protective of our kids. The world was a scary place and we ensured to give our children a safe space to grow up.

But when Kael revealed the hateful words Andy had spewed towards Arata, it opened a whole new perspective for me. I understood why Arata wished to distance herself from us.

It also made me wonder did we go overboard with protection?

Did we cripple them and not prepare them for what lay in this cruel world?

My heart constantly ached at the thought of Arata alone in another city. She had insisted that I was not to interfere with her job.

Arsten Empire had recently risen to the top of the fashion industry in Marica City. Not much was known about the CEO except that he belonged to a prestigious Sparia family. But the company had a reputation and I had only heard positive feedback about him.

But a father’s heart would never ease and I constantly worried for Arata.

"Sir, Mr Lawson is here to see you." My senior secretary, Callum informed me, interrupting my thoughts. He was a bright lad and had replaced Lawrence.

Lawrence and Mawar had set up their company. Cherry also joined them. Callum was Kael and Erdith’s son and he insisted on working under me.

"Send him in." My jaw clenched, and my hands balled up in anger that ran through me like poison, ready to lash out as I stiffened in my seat.

Lawson, Andy’s father, entered my office timidly. His balding head seemed to have lost even more hair after the shameful act his son had done. Many companies had ended their contracts with Lawsons and the media shunned them.

I ensured they felt the wrath of the whole city, I was going to bring them to their knees.

"Mr Kincaid, thank you for seeing me," he apologetically said as I pointed towards the reserved chair and turned to face him. My hands clasped together.

"To what do I owe the pleasure? Hasn’t your son humiliated us enough?" I asked, rather calmly, but inside, a tsunami raged, ready to burst out and sweep him away.

He took in a shaky breath and shook his head in embarrassment.

"Believe me, Mr Kincaid. I had no idea of Andy’s intentions. My wife and I were as shocked as your family. If we had known, we wouldn’t have let him take such a decision."

I scoffed and placed my hands on the smooth desk, leaning in.

"Your son embarrassed my family. He embarrassed my daughter. He body shammed her and he broke her heart. Be very thankful he is still alive, for I gave my word to my daughter that I wouldn’t seek him out for revenge."

Terror flashed in his widened eyes as he fidgeted in his chair. My gaze and words made him uncomfortable.

"I apologise on his behalf, Mr Kincaid. Please, don’t cut us off. No company will work with us if you terminate all your contracts with us," He clasped his pudgy hands together and begged.

My heart had turned to stone for these people. Arata’s tear-ridden face never left my mind and all my mercy seemed to have vanished like clouds on a sunny day.

"That has already been done. You know where the door is. Call it personal if you may but I won’t entertain a cheater." Darkness engulfed me, making me blind to his pleas and tears.

Callum had to take him away because I was done.

Turning my seat away, I stared out of the window when the door opened, and her scent reached me before she did.

Soothing and calming, she was my moral compass.

I smiled, knowing where she would sit.

"Zy!" She calmly called me out, settling in my lap and putting her arms around me. The redness in her hair had hardly changed from the very first moment I had seen her and those forest-green eyes of hers still held the same wisdom.

Placing my head on her warm chest, I whimpered. My lips quivered.

"I thought we had put the miseries behind us. Why did it have to happen with our daughter?"

She gently rubbed my slowly greying hair and placed her lips in it.

"She is our daughter, Zy. She is stronger and smarter than she lets on. And that smart mouth she has. Arata will be fine. Let her familiarise herself with the world. We can’t shield her forever."

Her words held truths but my heart was too fragile when it came down to my children.

"I know but there will be no forgiveness for the man who broke her heart. I am going to throw him to the streets."

She simply glided her long fingers through my hair. We had long promised each other not to show mercy to those who would wrong us, and we were going to live by this code.

Even though Doran was gone and so were my parents we had many hidden enemies. Exactly the reason we could never be too careful.

"I have no doubt," my beautiful wife determinedly answered and held me in her arms.
