Chapter 222 -221 Late Notice
After so many years without hearing from him, he actually settled down in Magnificent Castle?
Farrelan quickly scanned the contents of the newspaper, and several key terms caught his eye: “heroic journalist,” “propagandist for Paradise,” “reporter of major events”… There was no doubt that even in this remote land overseas, Dane had made a name for himself with his capabilities.
He suddenly realized that this might be an opportunity for himself.
After pondering for a moment, Farrelan made up his mind—he reached for the copper wire hidden in his shoe sole, inserted it into the lock of the prison door, and jiggled it less than ten times before the lock clicked softly open.
“What was that noise? Did you open the door?” His neighbor, startled by the creaking sound of the iron door opening, advised with surprise, “Stranger, escaping from prison is a serious crime!”
He didn’t respond, but instead headed straight for the exit without looking back.
When he pushed open the heavy door, he saw a soldier sitting on a stone stool by the entrance stand up in shock, clumsily trying to grab his weapon, but accidentally knocking his gun to the ground.
For a moment, the two stared at each other, the atmosphere slightly tense.
“Don’t be afraid, I mean no harm!” Farrelan didn’t make a move for the gun but simply stood still, hands spreading open a newspaper, “I’m a friend of the heroic journalist Kort Dane. I have urgent business and need to see him!”
Thirty minutes later.
The detective, who had been locked back in his cell, finally received a response. When the prison door opened, two men of different statures, escorted by guards, walked in.
The tall one was Dane himself.
“Are you… Farrelan?” Dane examined him for a moment before exclaiming in surprise, “Weren’t you serving the Kingdom… How did you end up here?”
“It’s a long story.” He gave a bitter smile, “Could you have them let me out first? I really have important matters to attend to, and we can catch up while we’re on the way!”
Dane’s expression was complex.
He never expected that the person claiming to know him would be the renowned Falcon Detective Farrelan.
They had worked together for a while, and the collaboration had been quite harmonious. Dane had thought this would continue until the Crown Prince threw them an olive branch. Such things weren’t unusual; the royal family was essentially a great noble house, recruiting talented and famous individuals as retainers and even bestowing them with titles and lands as a way to strengthen their own influence.
And that’s when their disagreement began.
Even though they eventually parted ways, he knew Farrelan’s character well; at the very least, the man was not the sort to exploit others without scruple.
“I appreciate your help,” Dane said after a moment of silence, nodding to his companion.
The shorter one was naturally Leisk. The day of the great explosion, he had used a completely mismatched body due to the urgency of the situation. Now, his appearance was mostly consistent with before, also constructed out of pure wishing power. He stepped forward and extended both hands to Farrelan, “Lean your head over here.”
Although a bit puzzled, Farrelan complied. He squatted down and leaned his head close to the iron bars.
Leisk cupped his hands on Farrelan’s cheeks, closed his eyes to sense for a moment, and then said, “He hasn’t been implanted with a seed; the presence of the Evil God is almost non-existent.”
Upon hearing this, the guard immediately pulled out the keys and opened the prison door, “You can go now, but remember not to re-offend. Oh, and Lord Leisk, there is another one next door…”
“Sorry, can I wait to leave after dinner?” Brute called out.
“I’ll take care of this; if you have something to do, you can go ahead,” Leisk said considerately.
“Thanks a lot.” Farrelan didn’t waste any more words and quickly stepped toward the door to run out. Dane could only turn to follow, “Where are you going? I have a carriage.”
“To the port!”
…
Sitting in the speeding carriage, Farrelan briefly outlined his mission to Magnificent Castle.
“It’s not surprising that the Old Continent would send people to investigate, but I never thought they’d choose you,” Dane remarked after listening, “If you don’t return on time, would your new partner really dare to order the battleships to open fire?”
“They’re not my partners, just temporary teammates,” Farrelan emphasized, “and command of those five warships certainly doesn’t fall to us. You should know the navy’s temperament; these guys are so arrogant. The investigative team represents His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince, and if they get near the city, they might just open fire as a show of strength.”
“Looks like we’re indeed in a bit of trouble…” Dane frowned.
“Exactly, if a shell falls on the streets, who knows how many civilians will be killed or injured, and once the navy higher-ups give the order to fire, it’s hard to get them to stop—”
“I wasn’t talking about that,” he interrupted, “There aren’t many ships available at the Magnificent Castle docks right now. If all five warships sink, we might not have enough time to rescue those who fall overboard.”
“Cough…” Farrelan almost choked.
“As for the civilians, you needn’t worry about that. After the battle at Huiqiu Mine, Paradise has put together a set of alarm and evacuation plans. They can evacuate all the people in a block within an hour,” Dane added, “As for the fleet you mentioned, even if they resort to intimidation, they have to wait until daylight tomorrow before they can get close enough to open fire.”
This was true. Large ships would not risk getting close to the coast at night without docking, for fear of running aground or hitting a reef in the dark.
However, what set waves crashing in Farrelan’s heart was his former partner’s dismissive attitude towards the Kingdom’s navy.
Five warships were a considerable force, not an overwhelming one, but certainly significant.
Keep in mind that most of the pirate gangs causing chaos in the coastal cities of the New Land couldn’t even muster five steel hulls.
“Is the Paradise Sect really that powerful?” Farrelan asked hesitantly.
Surprisingly, Dane did not immediately confirm, “I think the initial followers of Paradise cannot be simply described as strong or weak, they are more like…”
“More like what?”
“Like apostles from another world. Just like the name the sect preaches, they wish to create a new Paradise here,” he paused, “That’s why I joined them.”
“So even you…” Farrelan was momentarily stunned, “I thought you wouldn’t serve any organization or power.”
“I just don’t want to work for evildoers,” Dane said, shaking his head with a smile.
“The Crown Prince is not the person you think he is—”
“But the Crown Prince is a member of the royal family, a noble,” he interrupted again, “We have both stayed in Miquelster City, seen all manner of things happening in the lower city districts, and all these issues are inseparably linked to the nobility. I wanted to report them, and you saw the result: no newspaper would meet with me, and unidentified masked men would break into the inn where I was staying. If I accepted the olive branch the Crown Prince offered, it would mean completely reconciling with those evildoers… That’s not the job I want.”
As Farrelan prepared to say more, the carriage suddenly slowed down.
Dane lifted the curtain, and on the vast sea not far away, only the last bit of purple-red twilight remained.
“We’ve arrived at the harbor dock.”
Farrelan had to swallow his words, jumped out of the carriage, and swiftly made his way towards the dock.
But by the time he got to where Seagull was docked, both sides of the pier were empty.
