Chapter 233 -232 Once Friends

“That’s true,” Chaoyang leaned over the railing, “But Angels don’t pursue wishing power anymore? You should also accumulate it through good deeds, right?”

Although Angels are different from Demons, they don’t need to consume anything just to stay alive.

“Doing good is a spontaneous hobby for us, not a purpose-driven action,” Ailuodi shook her head, “Besides, to achieve the kind of effect Tiffany talked about, like rescuing hundreds of thousands of people at once through a charity foundation, it’s simply not possible with our own abilities. Even if she could succeed, the wishing power she’d gain probably wouldn’t compare to that of saving just a few wealthy individuals. Since ancient times, there’s only been one way for Angels to obtain a large amount of wishing power…”

To slay Demons and bathe in Demon blood.

“Why do I feel like Demons are more like wishing power collectors, with Angels being the upper echelon predators?” Chaoyang scratched his head.

“According to K, most of the time Demons have the upper hand in their conflicts. Though they’re not superior in combat, their ways of corrupting human hearts are unmatched. Even an Angel like Zhende was ultimately sent to the stake because of a Demon’s schemes,” she explained.

“Hold on, when did Zhende become an Angel?”

“That’s what K told me. He says he has a directory that lists all the outstanding Angels throughout the ages…”

“That can’t be trusted, right!” Chaoyang interjected skeptically, “History can’t be traced back, and it’s just attaching the title of Angel to anyone with a good reputation to glorify the present.”

“Why are you so worked up? I didn’t say it’s definitely true,” Ailuodi nudged him with her elbow, clearly annoyed, “Do you still want to listen or not?”

“Listen, listen, listen. Continue,” he said.

“As time went on, our differences grew, and we kept arguing until one day Tiffany became completely disappointed with me and went to the United States alone. Since then, we’ve lost all contact,” Ailuodi sighed, “If she comes to the gathering this time, I want to apologize to her.”

“Why apologize, do you think you were wrong?”

“I wasn’t wrong, but neither was she. The more I helped others, the more I deeply felt that powerless goodwill is ridiculously futile; it sometimes has to rely on the mercy of evildoers. Tiffany simply saw money and status as her power. I shouldn’t have mocked her so harshly back then.”

“Uh… did you berate her fiercely?” Chaoyang asked.

“Fiercely. I was mingling in the slums every day at that time, especially when she belittled my friends as worthless, I lashed out with all sorts of ugly words,” Ailuodi said with a noticeable trace of regret, “Eventually, I ended up on a path similar to hers, forming the Skeleton Hand.”

“So that’s what happened.” He pondered, “But by that reasoning, she should also apologize to you. Those companions of yours… at least I think they’re quite alright.”

At this, Ailuodi showed a hint of a smile, “Indeed. Although they haven’t awakened as Angels, in my eyes, they’re no less than Angels! As for whether Tiffany will apologize or not, that’s not for me to decide, I just need to do right by myself.”

She was indeed more mature than her peers, Chaoyang reflected.

“What I actually came here to tell you,” she paused and then said, “is that there’s someone who has helped me even more than Skeleton Hand, and that’s you. I always thought Demons act with an agenda, contract rewards are too straightforward, easily driving users to immorality, and thus rightly seen as evil. But after meeting you, I realized that being able to gain power in a clear-cut manner isn’t a bad thing.”

“Cough cough… should I be asking for some kind of reward?”

“Maybe there will be one in the future, who knows?” Ailuodi giggled, “I’m hungry after talking so much, let’s go eat now!”

The next day at two in the afternoon, Stewick the butler arrived promptly at Ailuodi’s room door to lead her to the gathering.

Luowei Siya had taken Leisk to the northern horse arena of the castle, early on, where they had a racetrack suitable for horse racing, and it was all free.

Chaoyang stayed in his own suite, connected to Ailuodi through a consciousness link, thus, even without the organizer’s permission, he could observe the entire gathering.

This meant that Ailuodi had completely let her guard down around him.

After all, letting a “Demon” enter the venue would mean the true identities of all the participating Angels would be exposed, and afterwards, if Chaoyang wanted to make a move against them, no one would be able to stop him.

Ailuodi followed the butler through the quiet atrium and the sun-dappled gravel path until they reached the center of the castle. The deeper they went, the fainter the ambiance of the luxury hotel became; the daylight lamp strips hidden in the ceiling were replaced by brass chandeliers, and the walls transitioned from smooth marble panels to rough, uneven stone bricks. When they stopped in front of a solid wooden door that was four meters high, she felt as though she had returned to an era where knights were prominent and castles stood tall.

“This is it?”

“I can only take you this far, you’ll have to go the rest of the way on your own,” Stewick said, bowing.

Seeing that he had no intention of opening the door for her, Ailuodi had to step forward herself, placing her hands on the door, bending her knees and exerting force—the door was indeed heavy, but it wasn’t completely immovable for her. With a dull creaking of friction, the wooden door slowly slid open to both sides. When the gap was wide enough for a person to pass through, she slipped inside.

Inside was a narrow passage, its only sources of light were candlesticks on both sides.

“Building a house to look like this is really something,” Ailuodi complained as she walked, “If I were K, I’d go crazy living here for too long.”

“It’s probably modeled after the defensive passages in ancient castles. When enemies breached this point, they’d be stabbed by the spearmen from both sides—hiding behind the walls, they could slaughter the enemy without leaving a single piece of armor intact.”

“You make it sound so real,” she said skeptically while lighting the way with her phone, only to be shocked! The dark stone walls were indeed covered with many small holes, the other side dark and bottomless, a sight that sent chills down her spine.

“Speed of Wind!”

Ailuodi instantly wrapped herself in a whirlwind and rushed forward, willing to spend a bit of wishing power if necessary. Fortunately, the passage was not too long, and after running for fifty meters, she saw another wooden door.

This time, the door opened with a light push.

On the other side was a hall resembling a church.

The walls of the room were entirely occupied by stained-glass windows, and the noon sunlight shone through, casting vivid, kaleidoscopic patterns on the granite flooring. The ceiling featured a giant mural that somewhat resembled a rendition of the Creation of the World. Around the hall, pillars were adorned with various stone carvings of human figures, undoubtedly representing Angels, as seen from their folded or outstretched wings.

Ailuodi turned her gaze towards the center of the church.

There was just one long table covered with a white cloth, and many people had already taken their seats around it.

“This scene reminds me of a painting…” Chaoyang whispered.

“Which painting?”

“The Last Supper.” A sudden foreboding feeling came over him, “Is this gathering meant to catch a traitor?”
