Chapter 278 -277 I Just Want Thistlefort

The fighting continued intermittently until evening, and as the sunlight began to fade, Zhang Zhiyuan and the others finally breached the lord’s manor, capturing the political center of Thistlefort.

Although the players’ weapons were superior, and they even summoned armored vehicles for support, their numbers were ultimately too few, so they could only rout the enemy instead of annihilating their fighting forces. Most of the Kingdom’s defenders fled into the forests after their defeat, including the commander of this force, Airco, who escaped through a secret passage in the mansion and is currently missing.

“Suka, I didn’t expect this last bunch to be so tough to crack; they turned the entrance of the manor into a fortress,” Anthony complained. “Without heavy firepower suppression and Cloud-Burst Bomb support, we would have died a hundred times over before breaching it.”

“After all, this is equivalent to a World War I level conflict, it’s normal for light infantry to struggle,” Zhou Zhi said, opening his bloodied coat and lying on the ground, taking deep breaths. After the series of battles in Paradise, he had changed a lot compared to when he had first arrived. He no longer held his comrades back, and sometimes he could even come up with some fancy moves based on his gaming experience.

Zhang Zhiyuan walked over to Zhou Zhi to pull him up, “Rest later, we need to first ensure there are no enemies remaining in the manor.”

The latter noticed a grave expression on his face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Kid, you’re not still dwelling on that earlier issue, are you?” Anthony joked.

“I’m worried about the locals. Too many stragglers have escaped, and these people might become bandits, taking revenge on Thistlefort,” Zhang Zhiyuan replied.

“What can we do about that, given that we have so few people we can’t even guard prisoners?” Qianyuan Mingzi said calmly. “But I trust the host will have a way to solve this problem.”

After searching the entrance hall and banquet hall, everyone’s faces, except for the Russian’s, turned grim. It was evident throughout that executions were carried out here… not of soldiers, but of servants and women. Clearly, the military officers here did not merely indulge themselves with the people they had plundered but also vented their anger on their lives.

“No wonder they’ve fortified the entrance so much; doing something like this will get them killed sooner or later,” Cui Zhen’en spat.

“Come over here, I’ve found someone quite unexpected,” Fiend Ms. Ailuodi suddenly emerged from the corridor.

“Where did you go just now? You disappeared during the assault on the bunker,” Qianyuan Mingzi couldn’t help but complain. “Your arrivals and departures are so sudden. If it weren’t for our ability to switch bodies infinitely, I would really worry something happened to you.”

Ailuodi joined the battle halfway through.

They had thought Paradise hadn’t notified her, but she appeared midway through the fight and, after helping them break through two lines of defense, she suddenly vanished without a trace.

“I had an urgent matter in the real world; I notified the host,” Ailuodi said, laughing it off. Of course, that was not the case; she had rushed to the support because of a message from Chaoyang—the Demon said he had seen light columns from other believers in the direction of the lord’s mansion.

It was a crimson ray of light, elusive in the atmosphere.

And indeed, Ailuodi had encountered an enemy unlike any other.

She was a middle-aged woman dressed in a splendid robe, with the green glow symbolic of life power, like a flashlight in the night. Before Ailuodi could even speak, the woman hurled a ball of flame at her, burning the entire room to a crisp. If it weren’t for Ailuodi’s swift activation of lightning speed, that attack could have been fatal.

Since the woman clearly belonged to the Kingdom Army faction, Ailuodi didn’t hesitate; she unfolded her wings of light and soared above the burning ground, striking the woman’s head from the air. Their encounter lasted only a few seconds, but the outcome was already decided.

“Who did you find?” Zhang Zhiyuan asked.

“The esteemed lord of this city,” she said, emphasizing ‘esteemed’ heavily.

They passed through the courtyard and came to a side building of the castle. The entrance was a complete mess, scattered with charred charcoal and broken pieces of furniture.

“I smell roast meat,” Zhou Zhi frowned and said.

“How could a lord hide in such a place?” Zhang Zhiyuan asked with some confusion, “He could have escaped with the Kingdom’s garrison.”

“I’m guessing he didn’t want to stay here either.” Ailuodi shrugged, leading everyone through the charred hall to a large iron door. The iron lock on the bolt had been sheared off, and intermittent cursing could be heard through the half-open door.

Zhang Zhiyuan stepped forward first, pushing open the heavy iron door.

Inside appeared to be a suite, featuring a small parlor, bookshelves, and a large bed covered with thick plush quilts. A woman and two children dodged and hid, their eyes fearful as they looked this way. And a man was shouting loudly, “Where are the people just now? Damn it, let me out! Aren’t you here to save me? I am Lanqi Brindon, the Earl of Thistlefort! Anyone who sets me free will be handsomely rewarded!”

Now everybody saw clearly.

The reason the self-proclaimed Earl of Brindon could only shout but not come out was because his feet were shackled.

When the crowd entered the bedroom, the expression in Brindon’s eyes suddenly changed.

Although he still stood in place, there was now a hint of fear in his words, “This is treason! This is a crime deserving of a thousand cuts! No… don’t come any closer! I am an Earl, and you shall not insult me!”

“Ah… I almost forgot.” Anthony patted his head, “We’re still using the local soldiers’ bodies, dressed in their uniforms.”

“The army’s done for, and the leaders have fled.” Cui Zhen’en coughed twice, gesturing for the other to remain calm, “As for the few of us… we intended to create chaos and dismantle the enemy from within, which is why we disguised ourselves as them.”

The Earl was startled and asked tentatively, “Is that true? The sound of gunfire I heard earlier, was that you exchanging fire with Airco camp? Which unit do you belong to, and who is your commander?”

“What’s the use of asking so much, we are not part of the Kingdom Army, nor are we associated with the rebelling Duke Longjiu.” Zhang Zhiyuan threatened deliberately, “If you want to live, then clarify what’s been happening recently… How did a lord like you end up locked up in here?”

“You… you’re not sent by His Majesty the King?” Lanqi Brindon couldn’t help but be greatly disappointed.

“The King? He himself might not be able to hold on to his throne, let alone care about you?”

“What!?” The Earl was shocked, “Does that mean the royal troops can’t beat the rebels?”

“I don’t know how much you understand about the situation, but according to the information we have, the rebels are already attacking the Royal Capital,” Zhang Zhiyuan spread his hands. Due to the demands of the control center and his connection with Xue Quan, he was the most focused on the intelligence of this world, “And that was over a week ago; now, who knows what the Royal Capital has turned into.”

Lanqi opened his mouth, but only managed to stammer out half a sentence, “Ah… ah… may the divinities protect…”

“Wow…” Perhaps sensing the despairing atmosphere here, the children hiding in the corner of the room suddenly burst into loud crying, and no matter how the woman tried to comfort them, it was to no avail.

“You all go out first, it’s safe outside now,” Zhang Zhiyuan signaled for those few to leave.

But the woman resolutely shook her head, “No, I want to stay with my husband! If you want to kill him, I will be sure to remember your faces, and the Gaota Family will seek revenge!”

“If the family were so effective, then how come you’ve remained locked up until now?” Anthony sneered.

“That’s because Airco sealed off the information! They even forced a maidservant to forge my handwriting!”

“Who exactly are you? Deliver a message to your leader for me, if it’s money you want, I can provide it! How about thirty percent of Thistlefort’s tax revenue? Once the Kingdom suppresses the rebellion, I will also petition His Majesty to reward you brave warriors!” Lanqi hurriedly interrupted the woman’s words, “Listen well, I am an Earl personally granted by His Majesty William, and L always keep my word!”

“Is that so? But what we want, you probably can’t provide.” Another voice suddenly came from outside the house.

The person accompanying the voice into the bedroom was none other than Chaoyang.

“What we want is this city, Thistlefort.”
