Chapter 351: Chapter 170 Wayne: What should we do then_3
Being targeted by two Legendary Mages is a bad omen, and had it not been for Austin shielding him, Wayne would have been captured and studied long ago.
But just because it won’t happen in public doesn’t mean it won’t happen privately. Austin warned Wayne to avoid taking unnecessary night strolls, lest he disappear into a basement one day.
Wayne nodded, his thoughts wandering to the Ancient Silver Coin at home, speculating that Schrödinger should be visiting soon.
"They won’t come after you recently, even to avoid suspicion they’ll stay away from you."
Austin continued, "The Minister issued a self-investigation order, five high-ranking officials accused of bribery each set up an investigation team to determine which of the other four is the traitor."
"Political struggle, huh? The loser becomes the traitor?" Wayne ventured.
"No, we must catch the traitor this time!"
Austin looked at Wayne and said sharply, "The Magic Department needs to provide an explanation, not just to the Moonlight Church but to other churches as well. The traitor has gone too far, breaking the balance and plunging the entire nation into a faith war crisis."
Wayne’s expression grew solemn; in the world, there’s only zero and countless times, and once zero is broken, trust vanishes completely.
From Windsor’s perspective, it’s indeed a major crisis.
From the perspective of other churches, if Windsor could do it once, there would be a second time. With more audacity, who’s to say it hasn’t happened before?
Wayne, with a head heavy as a gourd, from the Magic Department’s perspective, this shouldn’t have occurred. A High Priest’s death wouldn’t affect deep cooperation with the Moonlight Church because of him, the High Priest survived.
Good grief, he was executing justice, and just like that, he became a national criminal!
They sure have keen eyesight up there; all other spies are worthless, only he, Wayne, hopes to give Windsor real trouble.
Austin seemed to perceive Wayne’s gloom and uncharacteristically consoled him, "From the family’s interest, I was the first to be cleared of suspicion; that’s a good thing. You need not get involved with the investigation team. Just keep a low profile these days."
Perhaps not wanting to give Wayne too much satisfaction, after finishing, Austin’s expression darkened again, "The crisis you face isn’t just the two Legendary Mages. Before going to Luzerburg, someone in the Magic Department had already wanted you dead."
"There’s such a thing?"
Wayne was puzzled; as righteous as he was, he never courted trouble. Even if there was any, it was only to combat evil, so why were there always people eyeing him?
Or was it that the Magic Department was a part of the evil?
"When you went to Luzerburg, checking into the Capital Grand Hotel, from taking the flight, all registrations were real name, without hiding your tracks."
Austin’s tone grew colder, "The person used the Magic Department’s resources but left no useful clues, clearly well-prepared. But that was a fallback, a contingency for failing to ambush the Moonlight Church. If it were me, to ensure the plan was foolproof, I would’ve definitely checked the hotel guest list, to prevent any uncontrollable factors."
At this point, Wayne understood Austin’s point; his real-name registration at the hotel while representing the Lando Family for business would not have gone unnoticed by the traitor.
Although Austin had not publicly announced him as the heir, he had already sent signals. The traitor, fully aware of this, still chose to lie in wait at the hotel, clearly planning to make a move on him as well.
Austin fiddled with the Ancient Silver Coin, "The thinking isn’t bad, but they underestimated your strength."
"Outrageous!"
Wayne nodded seriously, "This isn’t just about kicking my butt; it’s directly a slap in your face."
Austin did not respond; the attempted ambush revealed much, it wasn’t Wayne they were after but the Lando Family, and he had to proceed with caution.
After a while, Wayne broke the silence, looking at the four treasures on the table, "What about these items? They’ve suddenly become hot potatoes."
"Keep them at Lando Manor for now until things cool down, you stay at home these days, your new room is ready, don’t wander around."
Austin laid out the disposal plan. Dragon Blood was what he wanted, so he kept it directly. The Moon Shadow Tome and the copies of The Forgotten Manuscript would be used in deals after this ordeal to make more profits.
The Ring of the Fire Element was a bit tricky, knowledge could be copied, but not a ring. They would see the offer: if the price was right, trade it, if not, claim it was lost.
Understood, not making a profit is a loss, giving them away is going out of business.
Wayne nodded repeatedly, truly a middle-aged reflection in the mirror, make a profit when possible, and find a way even when there seems to be none.
But there was one thing he cared about deeply.
"Austin, in whose name shall we give Dragon Blood to the teacher and Veronica, you or me?"
"I’ve cleaned up too many messes for you, and now you want to snatch my Dragon Blood!"
Austin was displeased; he hadn’t stepped down yet, and Wayne was already brazenly trying to take his benefits. If he stepped down, would he only be able to live in a gatehouse afterward?
"I’ve sacrificed a lot too; you don’t know that to get the Dragon Blood, I nearly lost my life." Wayne complained incessantly; if it weren’t for his efforts, the Dragon Blood would have been snatched away long ago.
The two stared at each other again, and after two minutes, Austin sneered, "As far as I know, during your stay at the hotel these days, you’ve been sleeping in the same suite with your secretary!"
"..."
You knew that too?
