Chapter 178 - 178: No Wasted Words

Jiraiya and Tsunade were in the midst of a passionate romance.

Having been apart for many days, their longing for each other was overwhelming. The moment they stepped into the room, they embraced tightly. Before long, the rhythmic creaking of the bed filled the space.

The bedroom, balcony, living room, and even the bathroom—each bore evidence of Tsunade's presence.

"In three days, we go to war against the shinobi of the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind. As always, you will lead the medical-nin at the rear," Jiraiya murmured as he toyed with her ample curves, his voice low and intimate.

"Our role as medical-nin is to save as many injured comrades as possible. I understand that," Tsunade replied, nodding before slipping back under the covers.

Soon, the bed began shaking once again.

...

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.

Jiraiya stood atop the fortress wall, gazing down at the assembled Konoha shinobi. A surge of determination welled up in his chest.

The time had come to face the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind.

Jiraiya planned to leave only a hundred shinobi behind to guard the civilians of Tetsuishi Town—every other available soldier would march into battle.

After all, the only real threat to Tetsuishi Town now came from the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind. The shinobi of the Land of Rain had no intentions of reclaiming the town. They had already abandoned this resource point, and with Konoha locked in a standoff with the other two nations, they had chosen not to intervene.

Even if Konoha and their enemies fought to the brink of destruction, the Land of Rain knew reclaiming Tetsuishi Town was near impossible. If they seized it, the three great nations would only return to crush them again. It would be an unwinnable war, one that would only lead to more of their shinobi dying in vain.

Rather than spreading themselves thin, the Land of Rain had opted to defend their core territories while letting the three major nations fight, weaken each other, and ease the pressure on their own forces.

"The shinobi of the Land of Wind and the Land of Earth want to take Tetsuishi Town from us," Jiraiya declared, his voice booming. "Our comrades bled and died to claim this place, yet these two nations dare to try and steal it from us."

"They look down on us! They mock us!"

"Tell me—can we tolerate such disrespect?!"

"No!"

"No!" The Konoha shinobi roared in unison, their voices ringing through the battlefield.

"Then march with me! Let the Land of Wind and the Land of Earth learn that the Land of Fire—first among the great nations—is no mere name!"

With his rousing speech complete, Jiraiya leaped down from the fortress walls and led his troops forward. Their destination: the enemy stronghold.

...

The shinobi of the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind had set up camp in a valley not far from Tetsuishi Town.

The moment Konoha's forces mobilized, the enemy took notice.

In a large tent at the heart of the enemy camp, the commanders of the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind convened for an urgent discussion.

"I didn't expect Konoha to be so bold—to charge straight into war," muttered Kuroiwa, an elite jōnin from the Land of Earth, his expression grim.

The truth was, the two allied nations had not planned for a full-scale battle. By amassing their forces near Tetsuishi Town, they had hoped to pressure Konoha into negotiating.

Their Kage understood Sarutobi Hiruzen well—given enough pressure, Konoha would likely seek diplomacy over bloodshed.

"If Konoha wants a fight, we'll give them one! I refuse to believe that, together, we can't crush them!" growled Baki, an elite jōnin from the Land of Wind.

"It's possible Konoha is only posturing, trying to apply pressure of their own to gain leverage in negotiations," another jōnin from the Land of Earth suggested.

Kuroiwa scoffed. "No need to speculate. We'll meet them in battle and find out. Whether they're bluffing or not, we won't back down."

With that, their forces quickly mobilized, forming defensive lines in preparation for Konoha's arrival.

...

"This is the territory of the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind! Konoha shinobi are not permitted to trespass!" Kuroiwa bellowed upon seeing Jiraiya at the head of the approaching army.

"You've repeatedly sent forces to harass Tetsuishi Town," Jiraiya shot back. "Today, you'll pay for it with your lives. And as for the land you've taken in the Land of Rain—we'll be reclaiming it all."

With that, Jiraiya pressed his hands together in a seal, instantly entering Sage Mode. Without hesitation, he bit his thumb and summoned Fukasaku and Shima, the two great toad sages.

There would be no wasted words—only action.

"Prepare to unleash Goemon!" Jiraiya commanded.

Fukasaku and Shima nodded, synchronizing their chakra with his.

In an instant, a surge of blazing fire, oil, and wind erupted forward, a torrential inferno engulfing the enemy ranks like an erupting volcano.

...

Despite their alliance, the shinobi of the Land of Earth and the Land of Wind had little coordination between them. They stood in separate formations, each nation prioritizing its own forces.

In large-scale battles, the shinobi of the Land of Earth had a distinct advantage over their allies. And Jiraiya knew it.

Targeting them first, he unleashed his devastating Sage Art, hoping to shatter their formation and divide their forces.

The enemy had not anticipated such overwhelming power right from the start. Even with their quick reflexes, the shinobi of the Land of Earth hastily erected stone walls in a desperate attempt to defend themselves.

But it was too late.

The flames roared through their defenses, searing through stone and flesh alike. The agonized screams of burning shinobi filled the air as bodies were reduced to ash in an instant.

"Damn you, Jiraiya! I'll kill you for this!" roared Kuroiwa.

The Land of Earth had suffered catastrophic losses. Nearly a hundred of their shinobi had been wiped out in moments.

Those who survived looked upon Jiraiya with horror, their will to fight shaken.

Even the shinobi of the Land of Wind were left trembling—if Jiraiya had chosen to target them instead, they knew they would have faced the same fate.
