69 -65: Infiltration

After checking their gear, Luo’er and his team set out for the mansion as evening fell.

The rain was unusually cold for this latitude.

Though their clothes were waterproof, they still felt the icy chill seeping into their bones.

Luo’er exhaled into his clenched fist and signaled for the two behind him to follow.

The rain had reduced visibility considerably, and in a few minutes, their sniper support would no longer be able to assist them.

Their only option was to hasten their pace and infiltrate the mansion, locate the target, and complete the mission.

The three hunkered down outside the perimeter wall, which wasn’t particularly high—a bit of running start would suffice to scale it.

Their paramount concern, though, was avoiding detection.

Luo’er watched the seconds tick away on his watch, calculating the guard patrol’s timing.

In due course, a patrol team passed by and moved on.

Seizing this critical window, Luo’er, and Cheng Ziang vaulted onto the top of the wall and then pulled up Tangmo who was shorter.

The trio then made it over the wall and lay low under the shadow of the bushes, all before the next patrol came around.

Hidden amongst the shrubbery, Luo’er checked his equipment – silencers had been attached to the rifle and pistol.

He gestured at the two-person sniper team at their overwatch point, signaling them to provide covering fire.

They were in the mansion’s garden area, full of shrubs that only rose as high as one’s waist.

So, they had to stay low and slowly advance through the shrubbery with caution.

The rain showed no signs of letting up, instead becoming even more intense.

The air became damp and frigid, evident by the misty breath that was now visible from their mouths.

After about half an hour of painstaking maneuvering in these conditions, they finally reached the outer edges of the mansion’s main building, where they waited under a windowsill.

It was already late evening, and soft lights were illuminating the mansion’s interior.

Their sniper support was no longer available, so they rested and waited at their current position.

Baiyue had been entrusted by Luo’er to carry out a specific task.

As per the plan, they were to remain at this position until deep into the night, infiltrating only when they had ensured that the mansion’s occupants were asleep and no longer moving about.

As the rain poured down outside, the trio remained huddled and shivering in a corner.

Tangmo longed to use a fire spell for warmth but knew it was forbidden.

Given Tarute’s status, there would undoubtedly be plenty of guards proficient in magic surrounding him.

A sudden flare of magical energy in the air would surely alert these guards.

Unable to bear the cold, Tangmo curled up and nestled against Luo’er.

Finding himself in an awkward position, Luo’er glanced at Cheng Ziang, who simply rolled his eyes, emitting waves of envy from his single status.

After waiting approximately four hours, it was already post 10 PM.

The nightlife of Otherworld people wasn’t as vibrant as that of Earth, so they assumed most people were fast asleep by now—an ideal time for infiltration.

Luo’er slowly climbed onto the windowsill, confirmed that the room was empty, and skillfully opened the window to climb inside.

The room was empty and devoid of any candlelight.

However, it was significantly warmer than the outside.

Once inside, they took off their hoods, wiped their rain-soaked faces, and at last, their bodies stopped shaking.

After a brief respite to warm up, Luo’er led the group forward again.

He carefully opened the room door, revealing a somewhat dim corridor.

The trio moved alongside the wall in the corridor.

Luo’er knew that Tarute would not be on the first floor, so he decided to search the upper floors.

The narrowness of the corridors made Luo’er decide to discard his automatic rifle.

He slung the rifle back and led the way with his silencer-equipped pistol, specially intended for stealth operations.

This mansion was a temporary place of rest for Tarute, hence the number of servants inside were limited.

The trio climbed up to the fourth floor without encountering a single one, although they had close calls with patrolling guards, which they artfully avoided each time.

They had made it to the top floor, where the number of rooms was significantly more, with closely spaced patrols.

Luo’er surmised that Tarute must be residing somewhere here, but he didn’t know which room it was.

Luo’er clenched his teeth in frustration.

It wasn’t like they didn’t want to scout out the place more thoroughly before striking; their circumstances simply didn’t allow for it.

Tarute was stopping at the mansion for a few days only, and if they couldn’t handle him in that time, then ambushing his convoy on the road would be an even more challenging prospect.

Moreover, Tarute’s meeting with the CIA’s representative in Yazhi City was imminent.

In the event they made another attempt on Luo’er’s team, Tarute would likely contact the assassin’s guild.

If the intermediary decided to turn on them, they’d be doomed.

Under no circumstance did he want to be hunted yet again.

So he resolved to finish off Tarute here, extract the information, and get out of this mission as soon as possible.

Another patrol passed by; the three evaded them by hiding in a dark spot.

Just as they were about to move on, they noticed a door not too far away opening, and a young maidservant stepping out of the room while yawning.

Luo’er quickly acted, slinking forward and covering her mouth, shepherding her back into the room.

Tangmo and Cheng Ziang followed suit and quietly shut the door behind them.

Though the room had multiple beds, it was only occupied by the young maidservant.

Luo’er pinned her against the wall, with one hand covering her mouth while the other drew a dagger from his waist, which he held to her throat.

The maid stared at them wide-eyed with terror, she was immobilized with fear by Luo’er as if she was shaking like chaff.

“I don’t want to give you any trouble, I ask a question, you answer a question, as long as you answer me honestly, then I will let you go, understand?” Luo’er whispered threateningly.

The maid did not know if she could understand him or not as she stared wide-eyed at his emerald eyes, was stunned for a while, and then she began to nod her head incessantly.

“Which room does your master live in?” Luo’er asked.

The maid stared at him and did not reply.

Luo’er held a dagger against her throat and slowly opened her mouth to threaten her: “Answer me!”

“The, the over there…” The maid was trembling uncontrollably, her shaking hand pointed in a general direction.

“Specific location!” Luo’er said menacingly.

“Go, go over there…

The third room …” The maid said in a trembling voice, fearing that Luo’er would be angry and slash her throat with his knife.

After obtaining the information, Luo’er finally let out a sigh of relief.

He looked at the maid, whispering in her ear: “Listen well, don’t mention tonight’s incident to anyone, never tell other people that you have seen us.

Otherwise, if anything happens to your master, you are not getting away with it.”

The maid obediently nodded her head, her fearful gaze always on Luo’er’s face.

“Be a good girl and sleep here, don’t get involved, understand?” Luo’er continued to speak softly.

The maid continued to nod.

Luo’er grabbed her hand and turned her around, then hit her slender neck with a karate chop, causing her to moan and faint instantly.

He then led her to the bed.

Tangmo was somewhat worried as he watched Luo’er’s actions, fearful that he might do something excessive.

But to her surprise, he acted in a gentlemanly manner, which made her reassess Luo’er, a man known for his ruthlessness towards his enemies.

Luo’er did not notice her gaze, he went to the door, where Cheng Ziang was leaning against it, cautiously opening a crack.

As a patrol team passed by, he immediately closed the door.

After they had left, he opened the door and made a gesture for them to continue moving forward.

Following the maid’s instructions, the three of them reached outside the room she had mentioned.

This was a unique room, with gorgeous bas-relief carvings on the door.

The room seemed to be the kind only the most distinguished guests were allowed to inhabit.

Luo’er observed for a moment.

The patrolling guards had just left, and judging from their patrol schedules, it would be at least ten minutes before they returned.

This gave them ample time to carry out their plan.

Luo’er made a gesture, Tangmo nodded and began to draw a magic array on the carved wall using a special brush.

The technique of drawing an array is somewhat similar to that of a circuit diagram- guiding the flow of magic along a predetermined route allows the magic to display various effects.

Tangmo concentrated on drawing the array.

She drew it quickly and soon a magic array about one meter in diameter was complete, including the magic crystal power supply and passive trigger styles.

In this way, the magic array can be powered by the magic crystal and can be triggered manually, without the need to trigger the magic in the air, thus minimizing magical fluctuations.

On the Earth’s simulated battlefield, Luo’er and others had simulated reconnaissance operations in Otherworld.

The initial idea was to consider the possible existence of high-level mages in the buildings, so they should try to use passive magic arrays powered by magic crystals as much as possible to carry out tasks and avoid alarming mages with magical fluctuations.

Tangmo finished drawing the matrix, it was a Silence Magic Array, not the one she had previously improved that only targeted the wall, but the kind that once activated, directly envelops a few meters in all directions.

She embedded a magic crystal in the energy supply junction of the array, adjusted the runes, and then turned around with her hand over the activation style, nodding at Luo’er.

“Prepare!” Luo’er nodded and checked the silencer gun in his hand, then walked to the right side of the door and whispered to them.

Cheng Ziang nodded and squatted in front of the door, taking out a lockpick and carefully picking the lock.

This was a skill they had learned during their raid training at headquarters before coming to Otherworld.

The locks in the Otherworld were very primitive and old-fashioned structures that didn’t require much effort to open easily.

In no time the lock clicked open.

Cheng Ziang put away his tools, moved to the left side of the door, and nodded at Luo’er.

He reached into his pocket to grip the hilt of the dagger, prepared to attack.
