Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead-Chapter 686: The Rift
"I feel that the order to not panic did not quite register on them" speaking in a most impassive tone, Alielil looked down on the lower warriors, from where she stood, all seemed to be no more than ants, scurrying about in all directions- Did they even know what or where they were going? That was dubious.
Fear hung thick in the air, they had never had to faced the restless in this part of the realm, many had even fooled themselves into thinking that only they, the living, had the ability to cross over from one half of this realm to the other, but naturally, this wasn't the case at all.
These greenhorns had never had to fight such a war, only used to hunting restless, and even then, since they were weak, they would always pick fights against lone, or small groups of them when they had the numerical advantage.
Many of them were not great warriors, and certainly not soldiers, but thankfully, the fear of death compelled them to stay and fight, for if the city fell, all else would as well.
"They can not control their nerves, I always said that we should train them more harshly, these guys are complacent and weak, will they even manage to raise their weapons when the enemy shows up?" a man spoke, naturally appearing very youthful, as one of the great elites, his age was at least in the three digits despite that.
"Don't you worry, after a few get torn apart, they'll remember how to fight" another spoke, a larger man than seemed to favour looking middle-aged instead of truly young.
"Aldaii, Aliocen… Try not to speak ill of our subordinates, will you? They form the brunt of our forces and are the ones who slay the majority of the restless for the sake of everyone, if too many die, even if we win this battle, we might just lose the war in the long run" another elite joined in, a redheaded woman with oddly sad air surrounding her despite being all smiles as she spoke of potentially hundreds of death.
"Heh… Alielil, do you really think splitting up will be a viable strategy?" Aldaii, his black hair swaying in the wind, asked, choosing to ignore the redhead completely.
"Obviously, although we have clues which restless are going to show up to challenge us, there is much we do not know, the full extent of their power could be far beyond what we believe, or there could be many more powerful restless than we thought… I doubt you would want to be caught in one, if not both, of those scenarios and be unable to use your full power because an ally is nearby, yes?"
"Point taken… It is merely that for their king to suddenly decide to make a move… Surely there is something that we do not know at play here"
"I agree with him, we should be really careful, things probably will not play out as they usually do when we face restless on their own turf, moreover, there are parts of their side that we have never explored, they might have warriors we have never even heard of" Aliocen rubbed his chin in thought.
"Don't waste your limited brain juice you two, keep it for when the enemy actually shows up"
"Do refrain from antagonising them for once, Aliata"
"You're no fun, Alielil…"
The redhead chuckled, and then, the sky opened.
A dark rift tearing through the blue sky, the ambient soul energy going wild for a few moments as it expanded like a crack on a fragile building, until it spanned as wide as the city below, this passage giving sight into what seemed like pitch blackness.
"That was faster than expected" one of the elites thought aloud, the four otherwise unimpressed by the great rift unlike their subordinates down below who now really looked like panicked insects.

"Time to spread out" reminded Alielil, and the other three suddenly vanished from where they stood, leaving the blonde alone on the roof of the central building, watching the right with the same, unblinking gaze as always.
From the darkness, massive, white figures emerged, gigantic restless that were the nightmares of many as even if lacking in finer intellect, were always absurdly strong and difficult to put down without great force, one of them in particular was outrageously large.
Generally, the most massive of them were about as tall as the largest of animal whales were long, but this one was easily double that, and it came crashing down first, landing far away into the city, surprisingly, it hadn't been dropped atop of the main building, and instead so close to the ramparts that it hadn't been able to destroy and kill nearly as much as it should have.
But that was only natural, any closer and it would have been annihilated by Alistel, this was exactly why none of the giants were close to the main building in fact.
Their titanic weights shook the earth and the soul energy itself, one resembled a sort of canine with a crooked back and bearing front paws more similar to hands than anything.
Another was nothing but a mass of snake-like skeletons tangled up together with humanoid arms befitting its size poking out at random places across its body.
The largest however, was most worrisome not because it dwarfed the estimate of how big a restless could get according to the livings, but it resembled a sort of lotus, or spider lily perhaps, fashioned out of ribs, which crawled around thanks to countless limbs crowing its base.
It was most concerning because soul energy was condensing around the tip of each rib, exploding into a hail of simple projectiles everywhere, seemed like it wasn't a mindless beast or even just a mildly intelligent one, it wasn't unlikely that a humanoid body was to be found somewhere on its surface…
As she stared ahead, the second wave was already coming, hundreds, if not more than a thousand restless were descending from the rift, three stood out from the rest, and a fourth felt like staring at the soul sun for it oozed with most potent soul energy.
The three swiftly left, homing in on the three elites who had spread out, that much was to be expected, both sides wanted to suppress their strongest warriors, the restless because they believed that their foot soldiers would overwhelms the simple living warrior eventually, and the living for no more complicated reason than to swiftly defeat the opponents and take them out of the picture entirely.
'Only three? That's fortunate…' just as she thought this, a flaming ball of soul fire zoomed through the air, impacting against the restless king and dragging well away from the city and into an empty field.
Naturally, Alistel would be in charge of facing Irlanx Xacobus, no one else could pretend to hold a candle to this monster.
'I suppose I'll take care of the flower then-'
Like a spring being released, Alielil acted out of sheer instinct, manifesting her soul weapon and diverting a strike as the last second, a shallow cut appearing on her face as a figure wooshed right past her.
"Better stealth.. Better stealth, sure, but definitely not my best" grumbling something to herself, the unseen attacker looked back at the blonde.
"You are not a restless" commented Alielil.
"I am not, but I sure feel like appropriating the moniker to describe myself… Let's play little lady"
"Combat is not a game"
"Bollocks"
