“Stranger… Ir’Houwl… You are a bringer of great news, that is without question… So I will tell you information few are allowed to know… Not because they are of dire importance, but because they are believed to be so by the Ersta’ras, as long as a secrets are believed to be conspiracy theories and baseless beliefs, they can exist, but letting them be confirmed would be terrible- Or so they are convinced, I do not personally agree and instead am under the impression that it proves that they don’t have as much faith as their rank should imply…”
Watchful Undeviginti spoke like he had just learned how to move his jaw, which might not be that much of a stretch as he probably only rarely took over to speak in person, if ever.
“…First, there is I, Watchful Undeviginti, I am the one with the most awareness, but unlike what my worshippers would like to believe, the others aren’t completely clueless about the nature of their existence and what is happening down below… Thanks to developing an eye, I know more than them, but like me, they know what is going on wherever their sunlight touches” Ir’Houwl listened without saying a word, nothing that the Undeviginti seemed to actually possess the reverse of darkness awareness, although it seemed limited to the light they themselves casted, it didn’t mean much when you were a literal sun, there would always be light wherever you were.
“I have also found out how to gather people within me, my hunters are one of a kind amongst the five of us, although, I suspect that it isn’t due to a complete inability on the part of the others, but rather a lack of will to do so…”
Watchful Undeviginti, had its eye closed, seemingly fully focused on controlling his servant’s body.
“Prime Undeviginti is the first of us, even with the learning of two more of us that have separated, I am certain that Prime was the first to come into existence, and that it is their ability to manifest more suns that is the cause the rest’s existence, the truth is that Prime is certainly just as aware as I am, if not more, but does not wish to separate, for they are the only one keeping things together, if Prime leaves, the rest of us would meet a most tragic end”
“So we must separate first before Prime can do the same”
‘Well, Prime Undeviginti being the original one had always seemed obvious, but it is good to have confirmation I suppose… Though, I never would have suspected that it was actually conscious like Watchful Undeviginti, does it mean that the randomly appearing decoys are not actually random, but decided on by it in the spur of the moment?’
“You do not show reaction, but you surely want to know about his powers don’t you?
It is hard for me to be certain when I can not experience and see them for myself, I only vaguely sense it from a distance when Prime is in control, but I believe that they can manifest about as many suns as they desire, and do so in a chaotic manner intentionally, never doing so for specific purpose, Prime takes its role as a force of nature seriously, and thus, does not take sides and acts with controlled unpredictability to maintain the danger of the desert at all times”
Basically, Prime Undeviginti was a sun with a mind, but saw its nature as a solar body as a job and duty to fulfill, so despite being capable of complex thoughts, merely acted like a simple sun, that made the minor lord wonder if there were more suns like that which intelligence was unknown and did not matter for they did not intend to make use of it.
‘Well, his and her majesty surely know if that is the case’ blindly trusting in the strange couple composed of a talkative, and somewhat whimsical skeleton, and a mythical elf that acted composed but clearly wanted to have bloody fights, Ir’Houwl could not imagine better rulers than that.
Even when knowing full well about their slight quirks.
“Now… You probably heard a few things about Sanguine Undeviginti… Sanguine came into being just after me, and is treated as my opposite, my nemesis- In truth, this is merely a bit of rivalry… Sanguine was born with a moderate amount of understanding about certain things and did not grow out of them even after developing greater intellect… It sounds embarrassing, but Sanguine treats me as sort of an older sibling and wants to play with me”
Ir’Houwl felt like blurting of a ‘what?’ but swiftly held back, simply remaining completely impassive.
“Sanguine sees the world beneath as a playing ground, the people and creatures as toys to be used to compete, viewing my faithfuls as mine, and the reanimated corpses as theirs, it isn’t done with any ill intentions, Sanguine just can’t see any value in the life down below”
Ir’Houwl nodded, Sanguine Undeviginti was correct, there was no value in life, and since it already seemed on the way to be a necromancer, it was looking like a great candidate for the empire already.
“As for Illusory Undeviginti, they are actually pretty well understood by the people below, Illusory just likes to mess around with their powers, which is to weave light in mirages, their intelligence is not quite as developed however and they just hyperfixate on doing just that” freeweɓnovel.cѳm
The pale blue sun stopped speaking for a few moments.
“I can’t keep controlling this vessel for much longer” it said, simply speaking and doing nothing else was already complicated enough it seemed, so Ir’Houwl could guess that it couldn’t actually do much more than that by taking over one of its servants.
“Cleansing Undeviginti is the youngest, and… I struggle to tell whether they are actually aware, but bloodthirsty to a fault, or unaware and merely following their basic instinct… Cleansing wants nothing more than to kill and destroy anything that moves, literally, if something touched by its sunlight dares to move slightly too quickly, they will be utterly incinerated… Besides Prime who can manifest beams of concentrated light, Cleansing is the only one who can actually directly attack the world below” explained the dim star.
“I see, thank you for telling me so much, but I am not quite certain what about your words could be so worrying to the Ersta’ras, is there something they preach that is intentionally wrong?”
“The Ersta’ra are in close communion with the Undeviginti they worship, so they know more about their lord than most, and the truth is obvious, their idol does not really care about them, the powers of vapour are not directly granted or allowed, they are simply free for the taking, great talent is no sign of divine favour, and zealous worship does not accomplish anything, that is the greatest secret they hide from all others”
And then, the bandaged living fell upon the sand, twitching back into consciousness.
“Aah… The watchful one has spoken, you shall not be considered a threat unless new elements come forward, Lady Ir’Houwl, we bid you farewell and luck in your future endeavours, may we never had to meet on unfriendly terms”
