764: Operation Arid Soil : Part Seventy-Five
Never could have the situation gotten worse than this, his allies were all hiding away like rats, afraid and shivering of the enemies, the strange warriors that fought alongside the three reviled faiths were monsters, there was no other word to describe these war machines, all of them were elites that could shrug off dire wounds like they were nothing, and would continue to fight even if you severed both their arms, one of his fellows had had his face ripped off by the teeth of one of them.
Some of these mysterious warriors could even matchup against Ersta’sols, the youth did not know of the two that had been sent to this particular city were doing, whether they were still alive and struck under the light of the cleansing one, or if they had been killed was an enigma he did not have time to solve. freewёbnoνel.com
He was but mere arm-bearer, one who hadn’t even had a whole year worth of time to get familiar with his weapon or with the manipulation of vapour, even if he was the most talented of his generation, there was no way he could actually hope to do anything about a professional murderer like the masked woman, he had seen her a few times throughout the battle, and even Ersta’las were cut into pieces by her sickles, she was a devil of bloodshed and dismemberment.
But even then, he had been unable to look the other way when she targeted a mere infant, it was within his reach to do something, so he simply did, landing one good sneak attack and taking off with the baby, whose parents had most certainly fallen during the combat…
Rushing into the streets at his best speed, the boy made the most distance he possibly could with what little time he had bought for himself, but the city had become a field of murderous hazards, in many areas, the canopy of sollock had been damaged, allowing the dreadful glow of the incandescent one to pour through, forcing him to turn and weave around.
He did not dare to look back and simply kept running until he reached his destination.
The city’s solar temple was vast and full of dark corners, there was no better place to hide in, and he hoped to run into some allies there, and certainly prayed not to encounter more enemies.
The interior was calm and peaceful, he walked with a quiet, and careful step, hugging the walls as the baby in his arms remained perfectly silent, it had awoken, but did not seem to want to cry or make any other noises.
‘Thank Undeviginti, this child isn’t a loud one…’ the odds were so small, that the youth felt convinced that his solar patron had helped from beyond the sky.
Still, he did not drop his guard and snuck into a particularly maze-like part of the solar temple, the places of worship for the Undevigintis served multiple purposes, they were a place where the faithful could gather and pray together, naturally… But also training grounds for arm-bearers and titled members of the faiths, even having dungeons to imprison criminals and troublemakers, amongst other things…
So they were vast, and oftentimes possessing a confusing layout, he himself had explored the temple plenty of time and was familiar with it, which he intended on using to his advantage… A follower of Sanguine Undeviginti had probably not set foot in many solar temples at all, and certainly wouldn’t know the specificities of this one in particular.
Without hesitation, he headed for a specific room within the temple, this area was meant to house children without anyone to take care of them, which he knew the best.
Now, the problem was that they did not have proper door, and instead just leaf curtains, so the rooms could not be locked, but they could be barricaded, somewhat, the pieces of furniture were all blocks of sandstone, so carrying them or pushing them around was exhausting, but the youth knew what he was doing, and kept going.
Holding the ever-so quiet baby close to his chest, he soon heard the sound of soft footsteps, like those of a dancer, there was a certain rhythm to the person’s pace, it seemed so gentle, that one might be tempted to go toward them, expecting to run into a kind lady, or at least, the boy felt that it sounded exactly like how the caretakers of this wing of the temple would walk when checking up on the orphans.
But he did not budge, even if she concealed her vapour, he could feel his guts twisting as the steps loomed closer, the masked woman was here, simply strolling around without any sense of urgency, he had wondered how he had been able to do so much without being interrupted, but it was because his pursuer had not actually ran after him, she had just walked, and still, the sanguine heretic had still managed to appear in the exact area he had gone too.
Like she could smell his tracks.
He swallowed his saliva, sweat trickling down his back as even in the shaded interior of the solar temple, Cleansing Undeviginti’s crushing heat remained nearly unbearable, one arm holding the child, the other gripping his Ikakalaka sword tightly, if it came down it it, he wouldn’t just allow himself to be killed without a fight.
Hidden in the dark, every single one of Benerib’s steps sounded deafeningly loud to his ears, then, she stopped right in front of the room he had barricaded, and for a few seconds, there was silence, following by the sound of sandstone scraping against itself and then a loud boom as at least a part of the heavy barricade came crashing to the ground.
He heard the woman walking to the middle of the room, and then just stood there without moving for what must have been an entire minute, then, she just turned and left, stepping into the next room, and then the next, until her footsteps turned totally inaudible.
Still, the boy did not dare move, he only exhaled all the pent-up stress he had accumulated, it seemed like the trick he had used to hide from the caretakers in the past was also effective against mad killers.
This room had been his before, and being bored, he had dug out a small space in the wall behind one of the pieces of furniture, which had made him into the uncontested king of hide and seek, pushing the furniture around was hard and would leave marks after a few times, but it worked.
However, the place was growing stuffier by the second, and the baby was grimacing, if he stayed there, it would certainly make sure to express its discontentment…
