Chapter 30 -30: Sensing Fun

Aunt Liu immediately called Zhou Jin’an.

Mrs. Zhou’s gaze swept over An Kexin, noticing the fleeting look of triumph on her face.

Experience had taught her, she knew clearly, that An Kexin had done it on purpose.

She purposefully shook out this photo of Qiao En with the intention of smearing Qiao En in Mrs. Zhou’s eyes, using her hand to pressure Zhou Jin’an.

Of course, Mrs. Zhou did not like others playing tricks in front of her, but the person involved was An Kexin, the daughter-in-law she had personally chosen; she had to endure even if she couldn’t bear it.

In the world of powerful families, marriage does not require much affection. The more interests are entangled, the tighter the bond.

An Kexin had the powerful An Corporation behind her, which commanded influence in both political and business circles, able to give Zhou Jin’an the greatest support.

As for her personally, Mrs. Zhou was certain, she was utterly love-struck, her heart wholly devoted to Zhou Jin’an.

Such a woman, willing to go through fire and water for a man, would become his most effective assistant once their interests were tied together.

So, what was a little jealousy and a few tricks worth?

An Kexin couldn’t tolerate Qiao En, and naturally, Mrs. Zhou stood with her on the same front.

“Aunt Liu, call Qiao En as well, say I need to see her and ask her to come to the old mansion,”

Mrs. Zhou instructed again.

Subway station entrance.

Qiao En was waiting for the train when Aunt Liu’s call came through.

“Miss Qiao, the madam wants to see you now.”

Qiao En, feeling suspicious, asked, “Can I come a bit later?”

Aunt Liu said coldly, “The madam said she wants to see you now.”

The implication being, there was no room for discussion.

“Alright, I’ll come immediately.”

Qiao En switched subways, heading straight for the Zhou family mansion.

When she arrived, An Kexin was still in the living room massaging Mrs. Zhou.

“Madam, Miss An.”

Qiao En entered and greeted them.

An Kexin smiled faintly, “Secretary Qiao, I haven’t seen you in a few days, you look really well!”

Qiao En responded modestly, “Miss An is the one who looks good; I can only manage by covering up my sallowness with makeup.”

Mrs. Zhou, with a cold face, sized up Qiao En.

Whether it was psychological or not, after An Kexin commented on Qiao En’s good complexion, she too thought that Qiao En’s face seemed rosily fair.

In Mrs. Zhou’s mind, the image of that passionate kiss instantly surfaced, darkening her expression.

“What kind of work requires so much makeup?”

“Public relations,”

Qiao En answered truthfully.

“You went to work in public relations? Qiao En, it must be deliberate, right? It’s fine if you have no shame, but how could you let others slap Jin’an’s face? Have you forgotten what your status used to be?”

Mrs. Zhou, protective of her son, did not accept anything that could damage Zhou Jin’an.

Qiao En remained silent, her head hanging low, letting Mrs. Zhou’s fury spray towards her.

“Aunt Zhou, don’t be angry. Secretary Qiao is making a living on her own capabilities. She isn’t stealing or robbing; she’s earning money rightfully. Besides, the commission in public relations is indeed very high. You should not overthink it, public relations work is not the same as being a hostess,”

An Kexin soothed Mrs. Zhou’s chest, “kindly” explaining for Qiao En.

Yet her words seemed to have an obvious leading effect.

Mrs. Zhou hadn’t thought much about it before, but now she thought much more.

“Not the same? How is it not the same? Isn’t it all dealing with men and engaging in shameful deals? Qiao En, do you even know what shame is?”

Mrs. Zhou and An Kexin echoed each other, and Qiao En couldn’t get a word in, so she behaved like a respectful student.

“Aunt Zhou, how could Secretary Qiao be that kind of person? It must be a misunderstanding.”

Misunderstood what? Qiao En was confused.

The photo had circulated in a small circle within Nanchen, but nobody had told Qiao En; she was unaware.

“Secretary Qiao, quickly explain to Aunt Zhou what exactly happened with that man at the entrance of Jinma Entertainment last night?”

Qiao En’s face instantly turned stern, a chill rising in her eyes.

Mr. Nie said that he had received a strange message, asking him to handle Qiao En.

Could that person be An Kexin?

She didn’t have time to explain before An Kexin leaned over to Mrs. Zhou’s ear and whispered a few words.

Mrs. Zhou’s expression eased slightly.

“Even if it is a legitimate relationship, you must still mind your manners. You used to be Jin’an’s secretary, and with so many eyes watching, any improper behavior on your part reflects poorly on him…”

Mrs. Zhou began lecturing again.

Qiao En was utterly confused.

Dating?

Who was she dating?

“It’s not Secretary Qiao’s fault. These days, some men, relying on their wealth, show no respect for women. Secretary Qiao, I think you should have a good talk with Song Lian. He’s bold and a bit wild, but you’re different—you’re a girl, and you need to protect yourself.”

Song Lian?!

How did it get to Song Lian?

Just as Qiao En was about to explain, Mrs. Zhou spoke again.

“That man’s name is Song Lian? When did you start dating him?”

“No… we haven’t…”

Qiao En hurriedly denied it, but it was already too late, as An Kexin spoke again.

“Song Lian, oh, he’s a friend of mine. Secretary Qiao met him on a blind date, and I was the one who introduced them. Song Lian’s family is in the construction material business; they’re wealthy and good-looking, but he’s been spoiled by his family, a bit too reckless.”

At that moment, Qiao En understood.

An Kexin was using Mrs. Zhou to force Qiao En to comply.

The incident at the entrance of Jinma Entertainment had tainted Jin’an’s reputation.

Mrs. Zhou, out of her deep love for her son, naturally wanted to punish Qiao En.

She was single, a ticking time bomb, but if she married, it would be a clear separation from Jin’an.

Mrs. Zhou didn’t care who Qiao En was marrying, as long as it wasn’t her son, and as long as An Kexin was satisfied, she was ready to push things along and try her utmost to facilitate it.

“Qiao En, since Kexin is so good to you, you should appreciate it.”

Mrs. Zhou spoke with considerable weight.

But what does it mean to “appreciate it”?

Leave Jin’an, that’s one thing.

Marry a man they chose for her, that’s another?

Suddenly, the sound of a car horn came from the gateway.

Jin’an had returned.

An Kexin promptly stood up, flying toward the door like a bird.

“Aunt Zhou, Brother An is back.”

In the living room, only Qiao En and Mrs. Zhou remained.

Mrs. Zhou was dignified and graceful, her eyes piercing Qiao En like knifes.

“Did you remember what I just said?”

Qiao En, as always, kept a calm expression, neither angry nor displeased.

“Rest assured, madam, I remembered.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than Jin’an entered the room.

Mrs. Zhou did not look at him but kept her eyes on Qiao En.

Her tone became very gentle, like a loving mother, “Qiao En, since you and Song Lian are deeply in love, why not get married soon?”

She said it deliberately for Jin’an to hear.

Qiao En smiled shyly, “Madam, I’ll discuss it with Song Lian. If he also wants to get married soon, we’ll set a date. And we’ll need to invite you to be our officiant!”

The atmosphere in the room was heavy; Qiao En knew Jin’an had come back.

But she pretended not to notice, playing along with Mrs. Zhou’s drama and pushing it to a climax.

“What were you just talking about? Who’s getting married?”

An Kexin feigned ignorance, with a gossiping tone that was piercing enough to burst Jin’an’s eardrums.

Mrs. Zhou showed a loving expression, looking at An Kexin and said warmly, “It’s Qiao En, this child is fortunate. You and Jin’an should hurry up too!”
