Chapter 527 - Hala and Trial

Terrance understood Professor Kukui's thinking. The professor wanted to modify the Pokédex into a structure suitable for Rotom to possess, allowing Rotom to control the Pokédex as a machine and become its brain.

Calling it "artificial intelligence" wouldn't be entirely accurate, but it was equivalent to giving the lifeless Pokédex a flexible and functional brain. When Rotom and the Pokédex merged, it would be almost like the birth of a new life—thus creating the Rotom Pokédex.

Just like when Rotom possessed other machines, not only would its form change, but its type would also change accordingly. If it possessed the Pokédex, although Terrance wasn't sure what changes would occur, he imagined it would be nothing less than having a "super-intelligent robot" capable of retrieving various pieces of information at any time by his side.

Following Professor Kukui's suggestion, they once again used the same method to communicate with Rotom.

Perhaps Rotom genuinely liked the Pokédex, as it did not reject the idea. After some thought, Terrance decided it was worth a try.

The Pokédex was essentially a cheat device for rookie Trainers, allowing them to quickly know a vast amount of knowledge. While some might consider it a shortcut, no one could deny its effectiveness—it was a groundbreaking invention of the era.

The reason Terrance had never relied on a Pokédex was that he had already memorized all the basic knowledge a rookie Trainer needed. However, his current situation was different. He knew almost nothing about the Alola region. If he had to look up and study everything on his own, it would take a tremendous amount of time. If he had a "Pokédex" capable of retrieving and filtering the most relevant information according to his needs, it would save him a great deal of effort.

"Roto~~"

When Terrance placed a serving of food favored by Ghost-type Pokémon next to Rotom, its impression of Terrance began to shift from neutral to positive.

Terrance smiled. When interacting with Pokémon, food was always the best approach.

"Rotom, this Pokédex belongs to me, so if you want to stay inside it, you'll have to follow me around."

"Roto~"

Professor Kukui and Ilima watched Terrance quickly become familiar with Rotom and visibly became relieved. Especially Professor Kukui, who scratched his head and said, "Huh, Terrance, the food you gave Rotom looks pretty good. Want to talk later?"

"I'd be delighted," Terrance replied. frёeωebɳovel.com

The food used in these experiments was generally just ordinary "electricity". This was the first time Rotom had tasted something carefully prepared to suit the preferences of Ghost-type Pokémon. It was like stepping into a whole new world.

"Haha, this works out well. Now Rotom has found a suitable home." Professor Kukui let out a sigh of relief. He had been troubled over what to do with this uncooperative Rotom, but since Terrance was willing to take it in, it saved him the hassle.

"Since that's the case, then I'll have to trouble you, Professor Kukui," Terrance said.

"Leave it to me. It won't take long before your Pokédex is modified. In the meantime, you should take this opportunity to get along with Rotom."

"Alright." Terrance nodded.

Rotom had five different appliance-based forms: microwave oven, washing machine, refrigerator, electric fan, and lawnmower. Aside from its primary Electric type, these forms respectively corresponded to Fire, Water, Ice, Flying, and Grass type. However, once Rotom left an appliance, it would revert to its standard Electric/Ghost type.

This Rotom did not dislike entering the Pokédex, but it had resisted Professor Kukui's experiments involving entering the five appliances. The three of them made a preliminary guess—Rotom probably didn't dislike possessing appliances themselves, as that was an innate ability of its species. Instead, what it disliked might be the changes to itself, such as its type transformation.

Just like some Pokémon disliked evolving or being placed inside Poké Balls, this kind of resistance made sense. After some speculation, Terrance and Professor Kukui had a rough understanding of the situation.

"As long as Rotom's type isn't affected by the appliance, it should be fine to enter the Pokédex," Kukui concluded, already forming a plan.

At that moment, Rotom zipped around like lightning, swirling playfully around Terrance's fingertips. Seeing how quickly they had bonded, Ilima smiled slightly and said, "I didn't expect you two to get along so fast."

"Rotom is very friendly," Terrance replied with a smile.

This Rotom likely hadn't been born for long. Aside from its inherent instincts, it was as pure as a blank slate. As long as he showed goodwill and avoided doing anything that might upset it, getting along was effortless.

"If Rotom becomes my Pokédex, then I won't even need to prepare a Poké Ball for it..."

Terrance thought to himself.

Upon arriving in Alola, he had brought the Poké Balls of Altaria, Arcanine, Gallade, Castform, Beautifly, and Vulpix. He had already reached the limit of how many he could carry.

Aside from Mismagius, who was training alone on Nightmare Island, he had brought nearly all of the main Pokémon he was raising.

As for his Gym, Kotoko was overseeing it, and Officer Jenny was maintaining the security of Fallarbor Town, so there shouldn't be any issues.

That means he can focus on improving his own strength as much as possible over the next four months.

...

...

"Is this where Island Kahuna Hala lives?"

"This is the place," Ilima replied.

Terrance had come to visit Hala, the Island Kahuna of Melemele Island, to obtain the qualification for the Island Challenge. Since Professor Kukui was busy modifying his Pokédex, Ilima had volunteered to accompany him.

"Who is it?"

An elderly man with white hair, dressed in a martial arts uniform, stepped out of the house. He squinted his eyes and looked at the two young men standing before him, then spoke slowly, "Oh, it's you, Ilima. What brings you here?"

"Mr. Hala, I'm not the one looking for you. It's Terrance. At the request of Professor Kukui and Principal Oak, I've brought him here to obtain qualifications to take on the Island Challenge."

Hala's eyes opened slightly. "I see."

For an outsider like Terrance, obtaining the qualification for the Island Challenge would usually be somewhat troublesome. However, with recommendations from both Principal Oak and Kukui, it seemed he had saved himself a lot of effort.

"So, you want to take on the Island Challenge..." Hala muttered to himself.

"It's not impossible, but I still need to see if you're truly qualified."

"Does that mean a battle?" Terrance asked.

"Hmm... Terrance, right? Why do you ask that?" Hala looked at him curiously.

"I once met Mr. Nanu, and his condition for approval was to earn his recognition through battle," Terrance explained.

"Nanu? That guy... You battled him?" Hala asked in surprise.

"Yes," Terrance nodded.

"Interesting... very interesting..." Hala chuckled instead of asking about the outcome of the battle. "But my trial is not a battle."
